Once Upon A Summer 10/13/1918: Bushwick Sweeps Twin Bill From Brooklyn at Dexter Park; John Donaldson Plays Last Games for Royal Giants

On Sunday, October 13, 1918, with the baseball season winding to a close, Bushwick hosted the Brooklyn Royal Giants for a doubleheader at Dexter Park.  These games mark the end of John Donaldson's lone season with the Brooklyn Royal Giants.

GAME ONE pits right-hander Irvin Brooks for the Royals against Frank Kelleher pitching for Bushwick.  Riding a wave of ten consecutive wins, Bushwick opened the scoring in the third, then erupted for four runs in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.  Brooklyn finally answers with two runs in the sixth, bunching together three hits and benefitting from several Bushwick misplays in the field.  But the Dexters tally single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings en route to an 8-2 final margin of victory.  Frank Kelleher does not allow the Royal Giants a hit through the first five innings.  All told, Kelleher holds the Royal Giants to a pair of runs on just six hits and four walks with four strikeouts for the win.  Irvin Brooks yields all eight runs on twelve hits and five walks with five strikeouts in the loss.  First baseman Bill Pettus leads Brooklyn with two hits, including a double, John Donaldson goes 1 for 3 with a run scored, and Joe Hewitt also scores.  Shortstop Jimmy Irving leads Bushwick with three hits.

GAME TWO was a shortened seven-inning affair on account of darkness.  Bill Kelleher, brother of Frank, hurls for Bushwick against Phil "Fish" Cockrell for the Giants.  At the bat, the Taguer Brothers open the scoring.  Center fielder, Jimmy, doubles on the first offering he sees from Cockrell, and brother Tommy's base hit sends him home.  McVoy, the first baseman, drives home Bushwick's second run in the fourth.  Bill Kelleher holds the Royal Giants to four hits and three walks with two strikeouts over seven scoreless innings for the win.  Bushwick completes the sweep and extends their consecutive game-winning streak to twelve.  Fish Cockrell pitches well in a tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Cockrell, John Donaldson, Oliver Marcell (double), and Irvin Brooks account for Brooklyn's hits.

Once Upon A Summer 10/6/1918: John Donaldson Hurls a Gem; Brooklyn Royal Giants Sweep Twin Bill From Long Island City at Recreation Park

On Sunday, October 6, 1918, the Brooklyn Royal Giants sweep a doubleheader against the Long Island City club at Recreation Park, Queens.

GAME ONE - Midwestern star John Donaldson hurls a gem, limiting Long Island City to just four hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a complete-game shutout effort.  Donaldson also helps his cause with two assists in the field and at the plate with the game's only extra-base hits, both a double and triple.  Brooklyn bunches three runs in the third and two more in the fifth en route to a 5-0 final score.  Shortstop John Henry Lloyd tops the Royal Giants with three hits, and third baseman Oliver Marcell leads with two runs scored.

"Donaldson was in magnificent form, holding the locals at his mercy at all times in the first game."

GAME TWO - Brooklyn exacts a measure of revenge against Long Island City hurler Chad See, who defeated John Donaldson and the Royal Giants back on August 24 while pitching for Morse Dry Dock of Bay Ridge Brooklyn.  The Giants overcome a 2-1 deficit with pairs of runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 5-2 victory and twin bill sweep over Long Island City.  Royal Giant pitchers Irvin Brooks and right-hander Phil "Fish" Cockrell join together in holding their Queens hosts to just three hits and three walks with five strikeouts, four by Cockrell.  Oliver Marcell and John Henry Lloyd wield extra-base hits.  Phil Cockrell helps the cause with two hits and a run scored.  First baseman Bill Pettus also goes for two hits, including a double, and posts a game-high 13 putouts, including two double-plays with assists from Joe Hewitt and Pop Lloyd.

Once Upon A Summer 9/12/1918: Brooklyn Royal Giants Defeat Glendale in Eleven Innings at Farmer's Oval, Queens

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Friday, September 13, 1918

On Thursday, September 12, 1918, the Brooklyn Royal Giants prevailed over Glendale in extra-innings at Farmer's Oval, Queens. With the victory, the Royal Giants win the season series against the Farmers for the first time in three years.

The Royal Giants grab a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fifth innings.  Glendale ties the game with two in the sixth.  The teams then traded runs in the seventh.  Afterwhich, the score remained unchanged through the ninth, and into extra innings, they went at Farmer's Oval.  

Brooklyn starter Irvin Brooks and Jimmy Hickman of the Dodgers hurling for Glendale continue their duel through the tenth.  The Giants breakthrough for three runs in the visitor's eleventh while in return the Farmers can only muster one.

Irvin Brooks holds the Farmers to four runs on eleven hits (one for extra bases) and five walks with four strikeouts for the win.

Jimmy Hickman the Trolley Dodger yields 17 hits.  Playing first base, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd bats a perfect 5 for 5 with a triple, stolen base, and a run scored.  Positioned this game at short, Joe Hewitt goes 4 for 6 with three runs scored, and John Donaldson wields three hits with one run scored and four putouts in left field.

Once Upon A Summer 8/25/1918: Irving Brooks Twirls Shutout; Brooklyn Royal Giants Defeat Glendale at Farmer Oval

On Sunday, August 25, 1918, the Brooklyn Royal Giants avenged a previous loss at Farmer Oval with a fast and clear victory over the Farmers at Glendale, Queens.

Police were stationed outside the gates to enforce Mayor Hylan's order that no admission be charged. 

Inside the gates, Brooklyn right-hander Irvin Brooks limits the Glendale Farmers to just four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in a complete-game shutout victory.  With no outs in the second inning, Brooks pitches himself out of a bases-loaded jam.  

Starting this game at first base, John Cason and shortstop John Henry Lloyd served as defensive standouts.  Left fielder John Donaldson registers two putouts with an assist and Rafael Figarola 
started behind the plate.

The last time these teams met, the Royal Giants forfeited the game with the Farmers leading.  This time Brooklyn scores once in the second and three times in the eighth to secure a 4-0 victory.

At the bat, John Donaldson posts a hit, a stolen base, and a run scored.  Irvin Brooks doubled and scored, and center fielder William Parks and second baseman Joe Hewitt cross the plate.

Batting fourth for the Farmers, Brooklyn Robins outfielder Jim Hickman is held hitless but leads Glendale with five put-outs playing left field.  Starter Harry Heitman allows four runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a losing effort.

Once Upon A Summer 8/24/1918: Morse Dry Dock BBC Defeat Royal Giants in John Donaldson's True Brooklyn Debut

On Saturday, August 24, 1918, roughly six miles from where I presently live, the Morse Dry Dock and Repair Co. baseball club defeated the Royal Giants at Morse Field, 52nd Street, and 2nd Avenue, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Victory against the East Coast's various shipping nines continues eluding the Brooklyn Royal Giants. 

In a winning effort, Morse Dry Dock starting pitcher Chad See limits the Royals to three runs on seven hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

See holds the visitors scoreless through the fifth.  The Giants finally score once in the sixth and twice more in the eighth.  Second baseman Joe Hewitt leads the Giants with two hits and two runs scored, and third baseman Oliver Marcell scores their third run.  Shortstop John Henry Lloyd wields the Giants' only extra-base hit.  

From the batter's box, John Donaldson also connects for two hits.

However, on the mound, Morse Dry Dock offers the midwestern star no quarter.  After opening the game with a four-run first, Morse continues punishing John Donaldson's offerings to all corners of the field.  They double their score total with two runs in the fifth and two more in the home seventh.  Sacks, the left fielder, leads Brooklyn's ship workers with four hits, two for extra bases, and three runs scored.  All told, John Donaldson yields eight runs on nineteen hits (four doubles) and one walk with two strikeouts.

This game marks John Donaldson's true Brooklyn debut.

On Saturday, August 17, 1918, the Brooklyn Royal Giants, for a second time, meet defeat against the New York Ship League Team at the Third and Erie Streets ballpark, Camden, New Jersey.  Brooklyn previously lost to the New York Shippers here on July 18 by a score of 3 to 2.  The visitors again come away with two runs, but the Ship Team this time tallies five for the victory.

Despite the Delaware River Ship Building A.A. League season reaching its conclusion, the Royal Giants and Ship Team nevertheless partake in an exhibition.

Starting pitcher, Jack Barnard yields just two runs on seven hits in a near mirror image of his previous start against the Royal Giants.  Through two games and 18 innings pitched against Brooklyn, Barnard has now allowed just four runs on twelve hits.  He held Brooklyn scoreless through the seventh until they ruined the shutout, scoring their runs in the eighth.  

Second baseman Joe Hewitt and third baseman Oliver Marcell score for Brooklyn.  Only Marcell and Rafael Figarola wield multiple hits and left fielder John Donaldson accounts for one.

Also making his second start against the Ship Team, right-hander Irvin Brooks yields an equal seven hits, but the shipbuilders do a better job bunching them together for two runs in the first, one in the third, and a retaliatory two runs in the home eighth.


MEANWHILE, out in the Midwest, rumors are running wild ... but have no fear, for John Donaldson is scheduled to pitch for Brooklyn in North Bergen, N.J., on Sunday.

"Donaldson won fame with the All-Nations of Kansas City, and in one game against all stars from the National and American leagues, struck Ty Cobb out three times."
