Once Upon A Summer 8/11/1918: Brooklyn Royal Giants and New York Lincoln Giants Split Twin Bill at Olympic Field; Joe William Takes Opener, John Donaldson Wins Game Two

From the desk: DEM BARNSTORMERS & THE DONALDSON NETWORK

On Sunday, August 11, 1918, in the sixth of their series of games, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and New York Lincoln Giants split games of a doubleheader at Olympic Field, 136 Street at 5th Avenue, Harlem.

GAME ONE - Lincoln Giants starter Joe "Cyclone" Williams headlines the opening match, limiting the Brooklyn invaders to a pair of runs on six hits and two walks with eleven strikeouts for the win.  Brooklyn does not cross home plate again after Williams allows a run in the first and third innings.  Second baseman Joe Hewitt and third sacker Oliver Marcell score for Brooklyn, and playing left field, John Donaldson wields three hits, including a double.  Starting for the Royals, Irvin Brooks yields four runs on seven hits (none for extra bases) and three walks with six strikeouts in a losing effort.  Lincoln Giants' second baseman Sam Mongin wields two hits and scored twice, and center fielder Jules Thomas collects two hits as well.  Smokey Joe Williams helped his own cause with a hit and a run scored.

GAME TWO - Despite 13 hits by the Lincoln Giants, Brooklyn starter John Donaldson bests right-hander Scottie Hendrix and reliever Gifford McDonald, limiting New York to just a pair of runs for the win.  New York actually holds a 2-1 lead through five.  But after the third inning, Donaldson does not yield another run - six scoreless frames to end the game.  Meanwhile, Brooklyn bunches their runs in the latter innings with three in the sixth, two in the seventh, and single runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings for an 8-2 final margin of victory.
