OTD 6/29/1924: Catasauqua A.A. Defeat Dick "Cannonball" Redding and Brooklyn Royal Giants

In a non-Eastern Colored League matchup, the Brooklyn Royal Giants ventured one hundred miles west to Allentown, Pennsylvania, where Charlie Albert's Catasauqua A.A. team greeted them at Clearview Field.

Brooklyn took a one run lead in the second.  But the home team countered in the fourth.  Right-hander Dick "Cannonball" Redding, rated as the greatest colored pitcher in the country, was easy pickin's for the Iron Borough batters.  Two singles, two doubles and pitcher Ray Kepner's home run staked Catasauqua to a 5-1 lead from which the Royal Giants would not recover.

The locals added single runs in the fifth and eighth frames.  Brooklyn fell short with one run in the sixth and two in the ninth.  Both teams welded twelve hits.  First baseman Eddie Douglass finished 2 for 5, with a game-high ten putouts.  The Royal Giants committed no errors, but stranded ten men on base.  Right fielder Irvin Brooks finished 3 for 5 with a home run.

Cannonball Redding walked two and struck out three in losing effort.

Once Upon A Summer 10/13/1918: Bushwick Sweeps Twin Bill From Brooklyn at Dexter Park; John Donaldson Plays Last Games for Royal Giants

On Sunday, October 13, 1918, with the baseball season winding to a close, Bushwick hosted the Brooklyn Royal Giants for a doubleheader at Dexter Park.  These games mark the end of John Donaldson's lone season with the Brooklyn Royal Giants.

GAME ONE pits right-hander Irvin Brooks for the Royals against Frank Kelleher pitching for Bushwick.  Riding a wave of ten consecutive wins, Bushwick opened the scoring in the third, then erupted for four runs in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.  Brooklyn finally answers with two runs in the sixth, bunching together three hits and benefitting from several Bushwick misplays in the field.  But the Dexters tally single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings en route to an 8-2 final margin of victory.  Frank Kelleher does not allow the Royal Giants a hit through the first five innings.  All told, Kelleher holds the Royal Giants to a pair of runs on just six hits and four walks with four strikeouts for the win.  Irvin Brooks yields all eight runs on twelve hits and five walks with five strikeouts in the loss.  First baseman Bill Pettus leads Brooklyn with two hits, including a double, John Donaldson goes 1 for 3 with a run scored, and Joe Hewitt also scores.  Shortstop Jimmy Irving leads Bushwick with three hits.

GAME TWO was a shortened seven-inning affair on account of darkness.  Bill Kelleher, brother of Frank, hurls for Bushwick against Phil "Fish" Cockrell for the Giants.  At the bat, the Taguer Brothers open the scoring.  Center fielder, Jimmy, doubles on the first offering he sees from Cockrell, and brother Tommy's base hit sends him home.  McVoy, the first baseman, drives home Bushwick's second run in the fourth.  Bill Kelleher holds the Royal Giants to four hits and three walks with two strikeouts over seven scoreless innings for the win.  Bushwick completes the sweep and extends their consecutive game-winning streak to twelve.  Fish Cockrell pitches well in a tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Cockrell, John Donaldson, Oliver Marcell (double), and Irvin Brooks account for Brooklyn's hits.

Once Upon A Summer 10/6/1918: John Donaldson Hurls a Gem; Brooklyn Royal Giants Sweep Twin Bill From Long Island City at Recreation Park

On Sunday, October 6, 1918, the Brooklyn Royal Giants sweep a doubleheader against the Long Island City club at Recreation Park, Queens.

GAME ONE - Midwestern star John Donaldson hurls a gem, limiting Long Island City to just four hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a complete-game shutout effort.  Donaldson also helps his cause with two assists in the field and at the plate with the game's only extra-base hits, both a double and triple.  Brooklyn bunches three runs in the third and two more in the fifth en route to a 5-0 final score.  Shortstop John Henry Lloyd tops the Royal Giants with three hits, and third baseman Oliver Marcell leads with two runs scored.

"Donaldson was in magnificent form, holding the locals at his mercy at all times in the first game."

GAME TWO - Brooklyn exacts a measure of revenge against Long Island City hurler Chad See, who defeated John Donaldson and the Royal Giants back on August 24 while pitching for Morse Dry Dock of Bay Ridge Brooklyn.  The Giants overcome a 2-1 deficit with pairs of runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 5-2 victory and twin bill sweep over Long Island City.  Royal Giant pitchers Irvin Brooks and right-hander Phil "Fish" Cockrell join together in holding their Queens hosts to just three hits and three walks with five strikeouts, four by Cockrell.  Oliver Marcell and John Henry Lloyd wield extra-base hits.  Phil Cockrell helps the cause with two hits and a run scored.  First baseman Bill Pettus also goes for two hits, including a double, and posts a game-high 13 putouts, including two double-plays with assists from Joe Hewitt and Pop Lloyd.

Once Upon A Summer 9/29/1918: Smokey Joe Williams Outlasts Irvin Brooks and John Donaldson in Lincoln Giants Decisive Series Win over Brooklyn Royal Giants

On Sunday, September 29, 1918, after defeating the Cuban Stars of Havana in game one, the New York Lincoln Giants complete a twin bill sweep with a victory over the Brooklyn Royal Giants in the second game at Olympic Field, Harlem.

New York and Brooklyn enter the game tied in their season series and bill it for the (local) colored championship.  

Right-hander Irvin Brooks toes the slab for Brooklyn and is opposed by right-hander Joe "Cyclone" Williams for the home Lincoln Giants.

The Harlem locals promptly take a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then increase it to five in the fourth, knocking Irvin Brooks out of the box before he records an out.  Royal Giant southpaw John Donaldson
is called in from his position in left field to relieve Brooks, who takes over center field, with
William Parks shifting to left.  Donaldson ends the threat, but as the final score suggests, the damage was already done.

Brooklyn manages single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Lincoln Giants answer with two more in their half of the sixth then another in the seventh.  The Royal Giants push across two runs in the eighth inning, but no more.  Smokey Joe twirls a scoreless ninth to close out the victory.

Future Hall of Famer Joe Williams allows four runs on eight hits and four walks with seven strikeouts over nine innings for the win.

Four Lincoln Giants wield multiple hits, Jules Thomas, Todd Allen, and Bill Pierce hit for extra bases.

Irvin Brooks takes the loss, yielding five runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts while failing to pitch out of the fourth.  John Donaldson surrenders three runs in relief on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

William Parks and Bill Pettus lead Brooklyn with three hits each.  Right fielder Johnny Pugh accounts for two of four runs scored, John Donaldson and John Henry Lloyd the others.

Once Upon A Summer 9/22/1918: Brooklyn Royal Giants Stage Doubleheader Versus New York Giant Players at Jersey City

On Sunday, September 22, 1918, members of the New York Giants, playing under "Jersey City," hosted the Brooklyn Royal Giants in a doubleheader at the Culver Avenue and West Side Avenue ballpark, Hudson County, New Jersey.

This is the first time in the history of the Brooklyn Royal Giants they have faced a major league team.


The first contest features midwestern star John Donaldson opposed by right-hander Al Demaree for the Giants.  Brooklyn is limited to no runs on just three hits.  John Donaldson yields seven runs on ten hits for the loss.

Game two is a more tightly contested affair pitting Irvin Brooks for Brooklyn versus rookie Red Causey for Jersey City.  In a seven-inning contest, Brooklyn and Causey duel through six scoreless innings.  The Jersey City hosts score in the top of the seventh, but the Royal Giants do not answer.  Right-hander Red Causey is the victor in a seven-inning shutout performance.  Irvin Brooks takes the hard-luck loss.

Once Upon A Summer 9/15/1918: Bushwick Sweeps Both Ends of Doubleheader Against Brooklyn Royal Giants at Dexter Park

On Sunday, September 15, 1918, Max Rosner's Bushwicks sweep both ends of a doubleheader from the Brooklyn Royal Giants at Dexter Park.



GAME ONE - Right-hander Irvin Brooks toes the slab for Brooklyn and is opposed by Lefty Russell, one-time pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics and Robins.  

The Royal Giants open with two runs in the first inning.  But Bushwick answers in the second with a six-run burst, highlighted by Lefty Russell's bases-clearing double.  Joe Weiss singled and scored in the third, and in the fifth, right fielder Casey Stengel tripled home a run and scored, giving Bushwick a 9-2 lead.  The Royal Giants rally for two in the top of the eighth, but Joe Weiss pushes across the Dexter's tenth run in the bottom half.  Brooklyn then musters three more runs in the ninth to no avail.

Irvin Brooks surrenders ten runs on 15 hits, four going for extra bases, and four walks with six strikeouts in the loss.  Joe Weiss leads Bushwick with four hits, including a double and two runs scored, and Lefty Russell helps himself with two hits and a run scored.  Russell allows seven runs on eleven hits and three walks with three strikeouts to win on the mound.

Shortstop John Henry Lloyd leads Brooklyn with three hits, including a double, and left fielder John Donaldson goes 2 for 5 with a triple and two runs scored.

GAME TWO - With George Robinson facing off against Bill Kelleher for Bushwick, the teams traded single runs in the first inning, but not without incident.  In the top of the frame, Bushwick catcher Fred Hohman is knocked unconscious by a foul ball off the bat of John Henry Lloyd.  After about five minutes, Hohman resumes his position behind the plate.  

First baseman Al Birch singled and scored in the bottom of the frame, tying the score at one.  After two scoreless innings, Bushwick breaks out with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by Casey Stengel's run-scoring single and third baseman Joe Riconda's two-run home run.  The Royal Giants score once in the fifth, then tie the game at five apiece with three runs in the sixth, all the result of Bushwick errors as Bill Kelleher yielded no hits.  With one out and two runners on base in the home eighth, second baseman Joe Weiss clears the bases with a triple en route to a 7-5 victory and twin bill sweep in front of a record crowd at Dexter Park.

George Robinson yields seven runs on nine hits and five walks in the loss.  Bill Kelleher holds the Royal Giants to five runs on just five hits and five walks with four strikeouts for the win.

Casey Stengel goes 2 for 3 at the plate.  However, he lost one fly ball in the sun and simply dropped another otherwise easy chance.  

Robinson wields Brooklyn's only extra-base hit.  Center fielder William Parks, Oliver Marcell, John Cason, and John Henry Lloyd account for Brooklyn's remaining hits.  Through both games, Pop Lloyd totals four hits in ten at-bats.
