Brooklyn Takes Season Series From New York Giants

With both teams returning from a two-day break, the rivalry between the Bridegrooms and Giants resumed this day at the Polo Grounds.  The docket called for two games, but Jupiter Pluvius thought differently.  Shortly after 2:00 pm, the Giants staked Amos Rusie to a 2-0 lead with a pair of hits against 

Adonis Terry and an error by Germany Smith at short.  Afterwhich, rain delayed the start of the second inning and continued beyond the half-hour time limit.  Umpire Lynch canceled the game in hopes game two would start at 4:00 pm.  The call to play ball was made, and Amos Rusie and Adonis Terry returned to the box.  This time, the Bridegrooms seized a 6-1 lead in the first inning on five hits and an error by Jack Glasscock at short.  Brooklyn led 8-3 through the sixth.  But after New York scored a run in the seventh, Jupiter Pluvius ended play for the day.  Adonis Terry limited the Giants to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts for his twentieth win this season.  Third baseman George Pinkney and Bob Caruthers each wielded two hits and batted in a run.  Brooklyn takes the season series from New York, ten games to eight.

Amos Rusie Outlasts Adonis Terry; Giants Take Series

Upwards of 4,400 fans were present for Brooklyn's regular-season finale at Washington Park.  With 

Amos Rusie tossing for the Giants and Adonis Terry going for the Bridegrooms, the teams battled to a one-all tie through the eighth.  New York first baseman Lew Whistler doubled and scored in the first, and after seven scoreless innings for Brooklyn, Oyster Burns singled home the tying run in the eighth.  Much to the home crowd's dismay, New York tallied four runs against Terry in the ninth.  Afterwhich, Amos Rusie retired the Bridegrooms in order in their half of the frame for the win.  Brooklyn must now defend a five-game circuit lead on the road.  They will first make stops in Philadelphia, the Polo Grounds, and Boston before heading west to compete against the Colts, Reds, Spiders, and the Alleghenys.

Jim Mutrie's Youngsters Get Better of Byrne's Sluggers

In front of 1,234 fans at Washington Park, New York Giant rookie and native Staten Islander Jack Sharrott brought Brooklyn's streak of (nine) successive victories to an abrupt halt.  The right-hander limited the Bridegrooms to one run on four hits for the win.  New York opened with an unearned run in the first and a throwing error by starting pitcher Tom Lovett in the second inning cleared the way for another six unearned runs.  The Giants took an 8-1 lead in the sixth, which was it for Lovett, who surrendered eight hits and walked three.  Mutrie's men scored one last time against Bob Caruthers in the ninth.  Rookie first baseman Lew Whistler homered among his two hits and drove in a pair.  Second baseman Charley Bassett and left fielder Joe Hornung each tripled.  Bridegroom left fielder Adonis Terry singled home Brooklyn's only run.

Adonis Terry Earns 20th Victory; Bridegrooms Win Ninth in a Row 

Starter Adonis Terry walked home a run, and the Giants scored a second time on George Pinkney's error.  Another error by Hub Collins in the second inning led to New York's third run.  But Adonis Terry settled down to hold the Giants scoreless over the final seven frames.  He allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out seven for his 20th victory this season.  First baseman Dave Foutz batted home two runs in the first, and Giant starter Amos Rusie repaid Brooklyn the favor by walking home two decisive runs in the third.  The Bridegrooms tallied an unearned run in the fifth and tacked on two more in the seventh.  Amos Rusie walked nine batters and surrendered seven hits in the loss.

Look What Mutrie's Giants Did to the Bridegrooms, Again!

Brooklyn hadn't lost two consecutive games in over a month until the Giants served them a row of goose eggs for a second successive game at the Polo Grounds.  A crowd of 1,826 were treated to a glistening gem.  New York's young right-hander Amos Rusie faced the minimum number of batters while yielding just one hit and striking out ten Bridegrooms.  Left fielder Adonis Terry wielded Brooklyn's lone hit of the game.  Starter Bob Caruthers pitched well, but his support was lacking as the Bridegrooms committed five fielding errors.  The Giants scored in the third inning, which proved decisive, and two runs in the sixth sealed the series win, two games to one.  Meanwhile, the Beaneaters have leapfrogged Cincinnati and Philadelphia to occupy second place.

Mickey Welch Hurls a Gem, Shuts Out Bridegrooms at Polo Grounds

Jim Mutrie's Giants brought Brooklyn's nine-game consecutive win streak to an abrupt halt at the Polo Grounds.  The absence of Brooklyn right fielder Oyster Burns was an evident shortcoming in Brooklyn's lineup.  Meanwhile, New York's wily veteran demonstrated there is still much life and many wins in that right arm.  Brooklyn native Mickey Welch hurled a gem against his hometown aggregation, limiting the Bridegrooms to three hits and six walks with four strikeouts over nine scoreless innings for the shutout victory.  Facing Adonis Terry, the two pitchers dueled through five scoreless frames.  Catcher 

Artie Clarke crossed the plate in the sixth with the Giants' first run.  Center fielder Mike Tiernan singled home two more in the seventh, giving the Giants a 3-0 lead and their final margin of victory.  First baseman Dave Foutz accounted for two of Brooklyn's three hits, and Bob Caruthers wielded the other.

Adonis Terry Hurls Gem at Polo Grounds

The Bridegrooms visited the Polo Grounds for their fourth series showdown this season against the Giants.  Facing rookie New York star Amos Rusie for the seventh time, Brooklyn opened the scoring in the second.  First baseman Dave Foutz knocked home a run, and Tom Daly scored on a wild pitch.  Unable to solve Adonis Terry's offerings, the score remained unchanged until the sixth.  However, it was Brooklyn who added to their ledger.  Terry helped his cause with a double that sent home George Pinkney.  Foutz then scored on a sac-fly to left field, and a base hit from Germany Smith delivered Terry, giving Brooklyn a 5-0 lead and the final margin of victory.  Perhaps his finest outing to date, Adonis Terry yielded just five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts for the shutout victory, his twelfth win this season.  Shortstop Jack Glasscock accounted for two of New York's hits.  Foutz and Daly wielded two hits each.  The contest sounded as if half of the 2,059 cranks present at the Polo Grounds hailed from the City of Churches.

Bridegrooms Take Fourth Straight Contest From Giants

Brooklyn fell behind early as the Giants scored twice in the second.  The score remained unchanged through the fourth.  With the bases loaded in the visitor's fifth, Giant left fielder Jack Sharrott misplayed a Darby O'Brien fly ball allowing two runs to score.  A subsequent error by New York shortstop 

Jerry Denny allowed George Pinkney to cross home plate with the go-ahead run.  The Giants seized a 4-3 lead with two runs in the seventh.  But Brooklyn scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings for the win.  Bridegroom starter Adonis Terry earned his first victory against the Giants in four starts this season, allowing nine hits, two walks, and striking out four.

Bridegrooms Complete Sweep of Giants at Washington Park

After yesterday's low-scoring affair by Brooklyn standards, the Bridegrooms reverted to what they do best: hit baseballs and score runs.  The home team punished the offerings of Amos Rusie to all portions of the field, erupting for eight runs in the second inning and one more in the third to knock the Giant starter from the box.  Rookie Jesse Burkett entered in relief of Rusie but fared no better, allowing another seven runs.  The Bridegrooms posted double-digit runs against the Giants for the second time in three days.  It's the eighth time in 42 games they've accomplished the feat.  In the eighth inning, it began to rain.  The Giants scored two runs on a base on balls and two errors.  Afterwhich, the game was called in the bottom half of the frame with Brooklyn at the bat.  Starter Tom Lovett allowed just two hits and two walks with five strikeouts for the win.  First baseman Dave Foutz led the Bridegrooms with four hits, and Darby O'Brien wielded three.  On Monday, the Bridegrooms will play one game at the Polo Grounds before returning home to host first-place Philadelphia.

Bob Caruthers Outlasts Mickey Welch

New York Giant starter Mickey Welch and Brooklyn's Bob Caruthers traded zeroes through the first three innings.  Welch helped his cause with a run-scoring hit in the visitor's fourth.  In the bottom of the frame, the Bridegrooms built a lead they would not relinquish.  Third baseman George Pinkney and 

Darby O'Brien scored on an error by Jesse Burkett in right field.  Playing left field, Adonis Terry 

tripled home Oyster Burns giving the Bridegrooms a 3-1 lead.  The teams traded single runs in the seventh inning, and Brooklyn held on for a 4-2 victory, their second straight win against the Giants.  With 1,136 fans present, Caruthers allowed two earned runs on eight scattered hits and one walk with four strikeouts for the victory.

Bridegrooms Pound Amos Rusie Offerings

On a dank afternoon before 551 spectators at Washington Park, the Bridegrooms doubled up the Giants.  Center fielder Darby O'Brien accounted for three of Brooklyn's twelve hits against New York Giants starter Amos Rusie who was removed after the sixth upon yielding twelve runs and walking a ponderous eleven batters.  Bridegroom third baseman George Pinkney and shortstop Germany Smith were issued bases on balls four times each.  Starter Tom Lovett aided his cause with two hits and a run scored.  From the box, Lovett allowed six runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts for the win.  This marked the seventh game this season in which the Bridegrooms posted double-digit runs.

Giants Take First Series From Bridegrooms

The Bridegrooms appeared to have exhausted their offensive prowess in the previous day's affair.  One day after posting twenty runs, Brooklyn was held scoreless for all except the sixth inning.  Giants' right-hander Amos Rusie limited the visitors to just five scattered hits and four walks with five strikeouts for the win.  New York salvaged the finale to take the first National League series between teams two games to one.  Third baseman George Pinkney drew a base on balls leading off the Brooklyn ninth.  But after Oyster Burns struck out, the game ended on a double-play.  Right-hander Adonis Terry surrendered four runs on eight hits and five walks with six strikeouts in a losing effort.

Bridegrooms Rout Giants at Polo Grounds

Those who believed the heavy-hitting Bridegrooms this season would be quelled by National League pitching are mistaken.  Brooklyn is easily the highest-scoring team in the circuit and has now scored in double digits for the sixth time in 32 games.  The Bridegrooms set a new season-high with twenty runs scored against the Giants on Tuesday.  To the dismay of 528 fans present at the Polo Grounds, the City of Churches posted ten runs in the second inning, then tallied ten more over the remaining course of the contest.  First baseman Dave Foutz wielded a double and triple, and Hub Collins stole three bases.  Starter Tom Lovett threw up zeroes in seven of nine frames, walking six and striking out six for the win.  Giant rookie southpaw Jesse Burkett was knocked out of the box early in a losing effort.

Giants Rally in Ninth for Series Opening Victory

Brooklyn made their much anticipated first trip this season to the Polo Grounds, where they were met with defeat at the hands of Amos Rusie and the New York Giants.  It was the Bridegrooms who jumped out to an early lead.  Brooklyn scored runs in the first and fourth innings.  The teams traded a pair of runs in the fifth.  Brooklyn took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning despite only five hits and no earned runs.  But it did not last.  The Giants were down to their last out in the home half of the frame when they bunched together four hits and three runs.  First baseman Dude Easterbrook, who wielded a game-high four hits, knocked home the winning run as the Giants closed out a 6-4 come from behind victory.  Giant batters punished the offerings of Bob Caruthers for 13 hits.  Amos Rusie struck out five Bridegroom batters in a winning effort.

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Giants Late Rally Foils the Bridegrooms

The Bridegrooms and New York Giants resumed their inter-city rivalry at Washington Park.  In a make-up game from May 6, youngster Amos Rusie stepped into the box in opposition against Adonis Terry for the Bridegrooms.  First baseman Dude Esterbrook delivered home the Giants' first run of the game, who followed with two more tallies in the second for a prompt 3-0 lead.  Amos Rusie held Brooklyn scoreless until the Bridegrooms broke through with a trio of runs in the fifth on hits from Darby O'Brien and Oyster Burns and an error by Jack Glasscock at short.  In Brooklyn's next at-bat, center fielder Pop Corkhill singled, stole second, and scored on Adonis Terry's base hit for a 4-3 Bridegroom lead.  But it would not last.  The New Yorkers bunched together three runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Artie Clarke's triple as the rain began to fall.  Bridegrooms' first baseman Dave Foutz opened the home ninth with a double but was picked off on a fine throw from catcher Dick Buckley, and so ended Brooklyn's threat.  The Giants pulled even in their season series with Brooklyn at two wins apiece with the victory.

New York Giants vs. BROOKLYN BRIDEGROOMS

Giants Claim First Victory at Washington Park; Bridegrooms Heading to Philadelphia

The Bridegrooms would argue that it was Jupiter Pluvius who robbed their momentum.  However, Giants pitcher Amos Rusie's performance suggests otherwise.  Left fielder Darby O'Brien led off the home first with a double and scored on Oyster Burns' base hit.  Afterwhich, the duel was on.  Brooklyn starter Adonis Terry held New York scoreless through the fourth.  In the fifth inning, the Giants strung together four consecutive hits to tie the game at one.  After a scoreless sixth, the Giants posted a pair of runs that went unanswered.  After the first, Amos Rusie held the Bridegrooms scoreless with just five scattered hits over the final eight innings.  Adonis Terry similarly yields seven hits but takes the hard-luck loss.  Shortstop Jack Glasscock scored twice for the visitors.  Jim Mutrie's Giants win their first game against their new National League foe.
