N.Y. Islanders: A Revolt Grows in Brooklyn

From the desk of:  NO SLEEP TILL BELMONT

New York Islanders: Time for Jon Ledecky to learn sign language.

Fans have every reason in the world to be furious with Garth Snow.

There are nineteen games left in the regular season, the team is heading in the wrong direction, and their franchise player John Tavares has yet to sign a contract extension.

Once again, the Islanders are among the league's top teams in scoring, but remain among the league's worst in terms of goals against.  That's been the ongoing condition under Garth Snow, whom once again effectively did little to change it.

The billboards are up - one at Sixth Avenue and Flatbush Avenue,
the other at Atlantic Avenue and Classon Avenue.
I'll probably swing by tomorrow and snap some pics.
In the meantime, you're stuck with my version.

Snow sent the Edmonton Oilers a 2019 third round draft pick in exchange for 26-year old blue-liner Brandon Davidson.

Listed at 6'2" 208 lbs., he is a minus-five over 137 NHL career games played.  Davidson was originally drafted by Edmonton in the sixth round of the 2010 entry draft.  He was traded in Feb. 2017 to the Montreal Canadiens.  By December, however, he was back at Edmonton when the Oilers claimed him off waivers.

Garth Snow also acquired center Chris Wagner from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Jason Chimera.

Net result ~ zero impact.

I'd be pissed off, too.

The Islanders are on thin ice.  They've lost three straight, and have slipped into a ninth place tie with the Carolina Hurricanes.  Both are four points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets in the race for the second Wild Card position, and nine points behind the seventh place New Jersey Devils (whom Tuesday night defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins for the second time this season).

Meanwhile, the Florida Panthers are right behind them with 64-points and have suddenly become the hottest team in hockey.

2017 World Baseball Classic Showdown: USA vs. Puerto Rico Preview

From the desk of:  PLANET BASEBALL

WORLD  BASEBALL  CLASSIC
ROUND TWO

FRIDAY
United States
vs.
Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is undefeated through four games of World Baseball Classic play.

They were far and away the class of Pool-D, offering no quarter to opponents Venezuela, Mexico, and Italy.  Puerto Rico outscored the field by a 32-8 margin, and out-hit them by a similar 36-13 margin.

In a rematch of the 2013 WBC final, Puerto Rico most recently defeated Dominican Republic opening Round Two play.  Their 3-1 victory was the most tightly contested game they've played to date.  Each team was limited to six hits.

So far Puerto Rico has hit eight home runs and have committed just one error in the field.

New York Mets pitcher Seth Lugo will climb the hill again for Puerto Rico in their Friday night showdown against Team USA.  He started Puerto Rico's opening game of the WBC against Venezuela, surrendering just one hit and striking out three over 5.1 scoreless innings of work.

Team USA's most recent victory over Venezuela was perhaps their best played game of the tournament so far.

They have outscored their four opponents by a somewhat less prolific 20-11 margin.  However, USA has matched Puerto Rico's 36 hits during the tourney (while allowing their opponents 24 hits).  They are also coming off back-to-back 11 hit games (against Canada and Venezuela).

Team USA's strength has easily been their starting pitching.  Chris Archer, Marcus Stroman, Danny Duffy, and Drew Smyly, all started a game apiece.  Together, they have combined to allow just one unearned run on eight hits and no walks, with 22 strikeouts through 17.1 stellar innings pitched. None has yet to pitch five full innings.

Marcus Stroman returns to the mound for USA against Puerto Rico.

I could not capture this mural in its entirety.  After all, Grove Place is an alley behind
Fulton Street Mall, where adjoining businesses set their rubbish for collection.
Otherwise...

MTV's Video Music Awards Come To Flatbush

Let me just tell it the way it is.  This is big.  Brooklyn is hosting the VMA's this year for the first time ever.  I'd say it's been a good first year for the Barclays Center.  And perhaps, the VMA's is still only scratching the surface.  I'm still a staunch supporter of the arena, and what it represents for the future of Brooklyn.

But I'm not going to ignore those who still couldn't be more opposed to Barclays Center, or apparently, how they operate, and for good reason.  The rat positioned at the corner of Pacific Street and Flatbush (pictured above) is a clear and continuing indication Labor is displeased with the greater arena's ongoing construction practices.  And I'll be honest with you - if I saw this sign (pictured on Pacific Street) telling me I couldn't park my car on my own block, where I live, this Sunday, I'd be pissed too!  There are obvious issues impacting the immediate neighborhoods.  The VMA's are all nice and well, but events of this magnitude need better planning as it relates to the front of someone's house.

PIFSTARS At Fulton Mall

The Trolley ran into these two gentlemen Monday afternoon at Fulton Mall in downtown Brooklyn.  They were hitting the pavement engaged in some good ol' fashioned, earnest promotion.  I have respect for that, so I'm happy to help them spread their word.  Tell 'em the Trolley sent ya.
