BEFORE the BUMS 9/30/1890: Brooklyn Bridegrooms End Road Trip With Sweep of Cleveland Spiders

From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

The National League Champions Are Coming Home

It took extra innings, but the Bridegrooms completed a sweep of the Cleveland Spiders and are now winners of four games consecutively.  Facing right-hander Bob Caruthers, Cleveland opened the scoring in the second.  Afterwhich, the teams traded runs in the fourth.  Brooklyn then seized a 3-2 lead in the fifth.  But it did not last.  After three scoreless frames, the Spiders tied the game in the home ninth, and into extra innings, they went at National League Park.  The Bridegrooms rallied for a run in the tenth, and Caruthers retired the Spiders in the bottom half of the frame for the win.  Second baseman Hub Collins and Oyster Burns led Brooklyn with two hits apiece.  The Grooms posted a 7-5 record during their final road trip and will arrive back in Brooklyn Wednesday evening, where a celebratory welcome home awaits the 1890 National League champions.
  • FINAL: BKN 4; CLE 3 10 innings

Tom Lovett Wins Number 29

In an uphill battle, Brooklyn rallied late to outlast the Spiders for a second consecutive victory at National League Park.  Cleveland pounced right away on the offerings of right-hander Tom Lovett for three runs in the first.  Facing starter Ed Beatin, the Grooms then tallied a run in the second and a pair in the third.  The home nine reclaimed the lead in the fifth, and when Brooklyn again tied the game in the top of the sixth, the Spiders answered right back to seize a 5-4 lead through six.  The Bridegrooms finally synchronized their efforts with two runs in the seventh while Tom Lovett held the Spiders scoreless over the final three frames.  Lovett allowed six hits - including a home run by N.Y. native
George Davis - and four walks to win his team-leading 29th decision this season.  Brooklyn wielded eleven hits, with Hub Collins and Oyster Burns going for extra bases.  Meanwhile, Dave Foutz and
George Pinkney continues batting above the .300 mark with two hits apiece.  The final series of the season scheduled at Pittsburgh has been moved to Washington Park.

National League Suits Byrne's Bridegrooms Just Fine

The Bridegrooms cannot be overcome.  Despite five games remaining on the schedule, the 1890 championship loop is made.  Brooklyn shall officially take possession of the National League flag upon the season's conclusion.  After a rain-compromised series at Cincinnati, the Bridegrooms arrived in chilly Cleveland and posted two runs during their first at-bat.  The locals quickly tied the game against
Adonis Terry with single runs in the home first and second.  Terry then walked and scored on a passed ball in the fourth, and the Bridegrooms tallied again in the fifth.  Cleveland closed within a run in the seventh, but the Bridegrooms settled this affair with three runs on three hits in the final frame.  The victory gives Brooklyn a 6.5-game lead ahead of Philadelphia and Chicago, who are now left to battle for second place rights.

National League Pennant a Near Certainty

The National League pennant was all but settled this day at Cincinnati.  A tightly contested affair unfolded in front of 1,948 patrons at League Park.  Facing Reds' right-hander Jesse Duryea, Brooklyn opened with a run in the first and added another in the third.  After being held scoreless through the fifth, Cincinnati tallied once against Adonis Terry in the sixth but would score no more.  Terry limited the Reds to seven hits and three walks with eight strikeouts for his 21st victory this season.  The Grooms sealed Cincinnati's fate with three unearned runs in the eighth.  Over in Chicago, the Colts were defeated by the Phillies.  However, Philadelphia's efforts seem to have gone for naught as Brooklyn's victory all but mathematically eliminated them from the pennant chase.  The Bridegrooms now own a six-game circuit lead ahead of the Colts, each with just over six games left to play.

Defense Cages Panthers; Graham Gano Takes Care of the Rest

Two recovered turnovers started the game, and the Giant offense scored six points.

The first fumble occurred during the opening kickoff to Carolina and was recovered by the Giants at the Panther 22-yard line.  On their first possession, the offense feebly netted four yards on three plays, then settled for a field goal, albeit for an opportune lead.

Six plays into Carolina's next possession, Andoreé Jackson recovered a Robbie Anderson fumble at Carolina's 40-yard line.  One must think the ensuing drive was geared at Daniel Jones taking advantage of Carolina's mistake (lest we forget, this season will likely determine his NYG future).  Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka dialed up three initial pass plays for Jones, which only netted nine yards.

This is when Coach Daboll again demonstrated his promised aggressiveness.  Jones successfully scrambled around the edge on fourth and one to pick up the first down.  Jones was then called upon to execute six of the next eight plays and got the Giants to the Carolina eight-yard line before the offense again sputtered.  Graham Gano then kicked his second field goal to give the Giants a 6-0 first-quarter lead.

Big Blue did not score in the second quarter, while the Panthers managed a pair of field goals to end the first half tied at six.

Daniel Jones indeed outplayed Baker Mayfield in the second half.  Neither quarterback threw an interception, and each connected for third-quarter scores.  After the Giants opened the second half with a three and out, Baker Mayfield threw a touchdown pass to put the Panthers ahead.  Big Blue answered right back, as Daniel Jones connected with Daniel Bellinger on a 16-yard score.  But whereas Mayfield completed 48.2% of his attempts for 145 yards, Daniel Jones completed 64.7% for 176 yards.

Jones was also sacked three times which makes eight sacks in two weeks.  But the Panthers still got another nine QB hits on Jones, and for now, any Giant offensive lineman not named Andrew Thomas is a prime reason.

As such, there was not as much daylight to be found up front as in week one.  Saquon Barkley does what he does and often creates his own daylight.  But the rushing consistency needed weekly will be regulated by the big guys up front.  Barkley rushed 21 times for 72 yards.  Take away his long of 16 yards; the math says he rushed 20 times for 56 yards with another 16 yards receiving for 88 overall yards.

The undisputed offensive star of the game was kicker Graham Gano who was 4 for 4 in FG attempts, including the decisive kick from 56-yards out with 3:34 left in regulation.

On Carolina's next possession, the Giants defense held the Panthers to twelve yards on four plays, forcing them to punt and effectively secure the victory.

Much of this game was reminiscent of week one against Tennessee, wherein the offensive performance lagged behind that of the defense (and their competition).  And like in week one, the defense remained stalwart throughout the contest while the offense experienced a second-half surge.

Playing without Dak Prescott, the Cowboys have scored a mere 23 points through two games.  Meanwhile, Dallas and the Giants have yielded 36 points each.  Therefore, I'm looking forward to a defensive struggle and for Daniel Jones to give us something to rave about come Tuesday morning.

Pennant Denied; Colts Rout Bridegrooms

Monday's series finale at Chicago was more of an exhibition of frustration than futility.  Facing rookie right-hander Pat Luby, the Bridegrooms managed a mere six hits and scored one run resulting from a Chicago error.  Brooklyn tried running early, but captain Cap Anson - starting this game behind the plate - promptly shut them down.  Right fielder Oyster Burns was in a particularly foul mood.  He was fined a total sum of $40 and removed from the game for his ongoing abusive language directed at Umpire Powers.  At the plate, the Colts slugged Tom Lovett's offerings to all parts of the field for 14 runs on 13 hits, including a home run by right fielder Cliff Carroll in the fifth.  The Bridegrooms now lead the circuit by five games ahead of the Colts with six left to play.  They'll arrive in Cincinnati on Wednesday.

Tom Lovett Hurls Bridegrooms Closer to the Pennant

Like the Bridegrooms themselves, right-hander Tom Lovett continues winnings games at a circuit-leading rate.  In response to Friday's loss upon arrival to West Side Park, the Groom's ace held the Colts to a mere four hits - including an 0 for 4 performance from first baseman and team captain Cap Anson - while issuing four walks and striking out four through nine scoreless innings for the shutout victory, his 28th this season against eight losses.  Colt starter Bill Hutchison - leading the league in wins and innings pitched - had his offerings swatted to various parts of the field.  Second baseman Hub Collins led Brooklyn's ten-hit charge going 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, and shortstop
Germany Smith stroked two hits and crossed home three times.  Lovett and Adonis Terry joined the hit parade with two apiece.  Meanwhile, formerly second-place Boston lost both games of a twin bill at Cleveland and now trails the Colts by one-half game.  Whereas Byrne's sluggers now own a six-game lead ahead of Chicago with seven left to play.  The Bridegrooms and Colts will play their rubber game on Monday.  Afterwhich, Brooklyn will move on to Cincinnati, Cleveland, and end the season at Pittsburgh.

Adonis Terry Gets Pounded; Bridegrooms Lose Sixth Out of Last Eight Games

The Bridegrooms arrived at a chilly reception in Chicago.  On a cold day at West Side Park, Anson's Colts sprinted to a 7-0 lead against Adonis Terry by the fourth.  They tallied another in the sixth and twice more in the eighth.  Despite seven strikeouts, Chicago pounded Terry for five earned runs on fourteen hits and scored five other times because of seven Brooklyn errors led by second baseman Hub Collins and shortstop Germany Smith responsible for four.  After being held scoreless through the fourth, the Bridegrooms mustered four runs on three hits in the fifth, and Colts' rookie pitcher Pat Luby would yield one more in the eighth.  Third baseman George Pinkney and Bob Caruthers accounted for themselves with two hits each.  The game was suspended after the eighth inning due to darkness.  Brooklyn's circuit lead over idle Boston is reduced to five with eight games left to play.

Saquon Barkley Rushes Giants to Daylight

Bill Parcells once said a 47-yard field goal attempt is no easy task.  Just ask Scott Norwood.  But instead of wide right, Sunday's kick hooked left to give the Giants a 21-20 victory over one of last season's more formidable teams.

Congratulations to head coach Brian Daboll on his first win as Giants coach.  Give the man credit for making a bold decision.  Coach got away with it and deserved a day to glow.  As a fan, I thank him for guiding Big Blue to their first opening-day victory in many years.

But if the first quarter made you want to change the channel, I don't blame you - three possessions, twelve plays, and three punts.  When Daniel Jones fumbled to open the second quarter, years of frustration rushed to the forefront of my mind.

However, the defense twice held Tennessee to a field goal on consecutive drives, limiting the Giants' deficit to 13-0 by halftime.  This proved decisive.

Ryan Tannehill was not under much duress.  He was 20/33 for 266 yards with two touchdowns, one sack, and five QB hits.  But the Giants limited Derrick Henry to 82 yards rushing, and if you take away his long of 18 yards, Henry rushed 24 times for only 64 yards.

The Giants scored all their points in the second half.  There are many ways to interpret the performance of Daniel Jones.  On the one hand, an end zone interception, a lost fumble, and failure to connect with Sterling Shepard in stride beg the question: where's the improvement?  On the other hand, Jones failed to complete only four of 21 attempts, converted a huge fourth down, and threw two touchdowns.  Take from that what you will.

Saquon Barkley was the clear star of the game.  Take away his third-quarter 68-yard romp, and he still rushed 17 times for 96 yards with a touchdown and the go-ahead two-point conversion.  Saquon was strong through the middle, beat Tennesse to the edges, and with six catches, totaled 194 yards of offense.  Did he get away with a lost fumble punched out from behind?  That's for Coach Daboll to address.

Luis Moreno Hurls a Gem; Surf Avenue Sluggers Club Three Home Runs

For the first time in their respective histories, former New York-Penn League rivals, the Aberdeen Ironbirds, and Brooklyn Cyclones, met in the playoffs as members clubs of the (High-A) South Atlantic League.

Facing right-hander Luis Moreno, Aberdeen right fielder Dylan Beavers led off the game with a triple to right field.  Moreno struck out the next two batters swinging, and the third batter was caught looking.

Second baseman Jose Peroza singled home the game's first run with two outs in the bottom half of the frame.

Ironbird center fielder Jud Fabian tied the game in the visitor's second with a home run to left.  But designated hitter Joe Suozzi promptly answered with a solo shot to end the frame.  Right fielder Stanley Consuegra then singled home a run in the third for a 3-1 Brooklyn lead.

The rest of the score was underwritten by the Surf Avenue insurance company.

Left fielder Matt Rudick led off the fifth inning with a home run to right, and with one out and Alex Ramirez on base, Jose Peroza homered over the left/center field wall.  For good measure, Joe Suozzi tripled home a pair of runs in the eighth for an 8-1 margin of victory.

  • Center fielder Alex Ramirez finished 3 for 5 with three runs scored, and the Cyclones got two-out RBI from Consuegra, Suozzi, and Peroza.

Making his most crucial professional start to date, Luis Moreno hurled a gem, allowing the lone run on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in six innings for the win.  He faced 23 batters and threw 90 pitches, with 59 (65.5%) going for strikes.

Right-hander Nolan Clenney yielded no hits over two scoreless innings, and Daison Acosta retired the Ironbirds to close the ninth.

  • After making nine appearances with St. Lucie, Luis Moreno posted a 2.92 ERA and 1.091 WHiP in 77.0 innings with Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Takes Season Series From New York Giants

With both teams returning from a two-day break, the rivalry between the Bridegrooms and Giants resumed this day at the Polo Grounds.  The docket called for two games, but Jupiter Pluvius thought differently.  Shortly after 2:00 pm, the Giants staked Amos Rusie to a 2-0 lead with a pair of hits against
Adonis Terry and an error by Germany Smith at short.  Afterwhich, rain delayed the start of the second inning and continued beyond the half-hour time limit.  Umpire Lynch canceled the game in hopes game two would start at 4:00 pm.  The call to play ball was made, and Amos Rusie and Adonis Terry returned to the box.  This time, the Bridegrooms seized a 6-1 lead in the first inning on five hits and an error by Jack Glasscock at short.  Brooklyn led 8-3 through the sixth.  But after New York scored a run in the seventh, Jupiter Pluvius ended play for the day.  Adonis Terry limited the Giants to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts for his twentieth win this season.  Third baseman George Pinkney and Bob Caruthers each wielded two hits and batted in a run.  Brooklyn takes the season series from New York, ten games to eight.

Bridegrooms Drop Season-High Seventh Consecutive Contest; Circuit Lead Reduced to 4.5 Games

Make no mistake that before and throughout the entirety of the professional baseball establishment's more-than-quarter century existence, the pioneer, player, executive, and manager, Harry Wright, continues to impact the national game significantly.  As if willing his team to victory, Wright's Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Bridegrooms to pull within 5.5 games of the National League leaders.  The defeat was Brooklyn's seventh in a row, their longest streak this season, resulting in a week-long three-game decrease in the standings.  Bridegroom starter Tom Lovett appeared on his mark.  Staked to a 1-0 lead in the first on a Dave Foutz double and Hub Collins base hit, Lovett served up goose eggs through the sixth.  After the first inning, Phillie left-hander Duke Esper also accounted for himself with five scoreless frames.  But in the seventh, Lovett's offerings grew large in the eyes of Phillie batsmen who hit then to all parts of the playing field.  When through, they had amassed a 7-3 lead.  Not yet done, Philadelphia added a pair in the eighth for a decisive six-run margin of victory.  Meanwhile, the second-place Beaneaters defeated the Giants at the Polo Grounds.
