Once Upon a Summer 9/4/1918: Southpaw John Donaldson Hands Camp Mills Their First Loss of the Season; Brooklyn Royal Giants Win, 7 to 6

From the desk: DEM BARNSTORMERS & THE DONALDSON NETWORK

On Wednesday, September 4, 1918, the Brooklyn Royal Giants hand the Camp Mills soldiers their first season defeat at Garden City, Long Island.

Southpaw John Donaldson gets back to his winning ways, allowing six runs on seven hits through nine.

Facing Private Marshall pitching for Camp Mills, Brooklyn opens the scoring with a run in the first, then tally four more in the fourth.  But the military men bunch all their runs off John Donaldson in the home third, tying the game at five.  The teams then traded single runs, the Royal Giants in the fifth, Camp Mills in the sixth.

Camp Mills does themselves no favors in the seventh as a fielding error clears the way for the Royal Giants pushing across the go-ahead run.  Afterwhich, John Donaldson closes out the game with three scoreless innings for the victory.
