Once Upon A Summer 9/2/1921: Brooklyn Royal Giants and Cuban Stars Split Games of Doubleheader at Dexter Park

On Monday, September 2, 1918, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and Cuban Stars split games of a doubleheader at Dexter Park.

GAME ONE - In a back and forth affair, the Cuban Stars promptly pounce on George Robinson's offerings for two runs in the first inning and two in the third. Facing Rafael Cruz of the Stars, the Royal Giants answer with three runs in the fourth, then two more in the sixth. But their lead does not last. In the seventh, the Cuban Stars even the score at five. Afterwhich, southpaw John Donaldson enters the game in relief of George Robinson and tosses a scoreless eighth. In the visitor's ninth, left fielder Julio Rojo triples home the go-ahead run. Pitching in relief of starter Isidro Fabré, right-hander Evelio Calderín holds the Giants scoreless in their final at-bat for the win. Hero of the game Julio Rojo goes 4 for 5 with two triples and two runs scored, José María Fernández wields three hits also including a triple, and first baseman Agspito Lázaga leads the Stars with three runs scored. Despite yielding 13 hits, Rafael Cruz holds the Giants to five runs with three walks and three strikeouts for the win. George Robinson walks off to a no-decision as John Donaldson (two hits, one strikeout) sustains the loss in relief. Royal Giant right fielder Johnny Pugh goes 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, Rafael Figarola collects two hits and scores, and although held hitless, shortstop John Henry Lloyd stars in the field for Brooklyn.

CUBAN STARS (EAST)

GAME TWO - Brooklyn unleashes a 17-hit barrage en route to a commanding 10-4 victory. Cuban Stars starter Rafael Cruz is knocked out of the box before completing the second. In relief, Isidro Fabré and Evelio Calderín yield another seven runs on eleven hits in an abbreviated seven-inning contest. Both shortstop Peláyo Chacon and Isidro Fabré wield doubles and scored, and Julio Rojo swats his third triple of the afternoon. John Henry Lloyd leads Brooklyn with four hits including a double and two runs scored, second baseman Irvin Brooks is next in with three hits, and center fielder William Parks scores twice. Playing left field and batting fourth, John Donaldson collects two hits with a double and run scored. In support of starter Shang Johnson, Brooklyn turns a triple-play: Figarola to Lloyd, to Oliver Marcell back to Figarola. Otherwise, Johnson allows four runs on ten hits and a troublesome eight walks for the win.

OTD Brooklyn Semipros 7/31/1938: Cuban Stars Blank Bay Parkway Dukes at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, July 31, 1938, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Cuban Stars blanked the Bay Parkway Dukes at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M Station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - Cuban Stars starter Silvino Ruiz limits the Bay Parkways to just three hits (one for extra bases) and five walks with five strikeouts for the win. The Dukes pose their only credible threat in the eight when left fielder Johnny McAuliffe's double puts two runners into scoring position. However, Bay Parkway leaves them both stranded in place. Duke's starter Abe Spiro surrenders five runs on eleven hits and three walks with two strikeouts through nine in a losing effort. Stars second baseman Rafael Hechevarría goes 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, third baseman Clemente Carreras is 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored, and the first baseman Carlos Blanco is 1 for 4 with a stolen base and two runs scored.

On Sunday, July 21, 1918, the Cuban Stars defeat John Donaldson and the Brooklyn Royal Giants in the first game of a three-way twin bill. As the victor in game one, the Cuban Stars remain on the field to play and defeat the Bushwick nine in game two at Dexter Park, Woodhaven.

After trading runs in the first, the Cuban Stars seize the lead with four runs in the fourth en route to a 6-3 victory. Cuban starter Evello Calderín holds the Royal Giants to seven hits, three of which come late during a two-run eighth, but not enough to overcome the Stars. Calderín issues five walks with five strikeouts in a winning effort.

Royal Giant third baseman Oliver Marcell leads Brooklyn with two hits and two runs but commits two errors in the field. Second baseman Joe Hewitt accounts for Brooklyn's third run. Shortstop John Henry "Pop" Lloyd singles and makes a bare-handed catch of a line drive.

In the Stars' decisive four-run fourth, left-hander John Donaldson yields a triple to center fielder Ramiro Ramírez, a double, and four singles. All told, Donaldson surrenders six runs on ten hits and four walks with one strikeout for the loss.

Stars catcher José Maria Fernández and left fielder Isidro Fabré also wield extra base hits.

The Cuban Stars sweep the doubleheader at Dexter Park, defeating Bushwick in game two by 7 to 4.

Once Upon A Summer 7/4/1918: John Donaldson Twirls Shutout Over Cuban Stars in Dexter Park Debut

On Thursday, July 4, 1918, in this season's first clash between these Eastern Independent Club rivals, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and Cuban Stars split games of a double-header at Dexter Park, Woodhaven, Queens.

Cuban Stars (East) vs. Brooklyn Royal Giants

GAME ONE - Making his second start for Brooklyn, but closer to the matter, his home field debut for the Royal Giants, left-hander John Donaldson mesmerizes Dexter Park's holiday crowd with a demonstration in subtle efficiency. The midwestern southpaw limits the Cuban Stars to just five hits, one for extra bases, and a walk with six strikeouts in a complete-game shutout victory, his first as a member of the Royal Giants. Left fielder Isidro Fabre is the lone Cuban Star with multiple hits, including a double against Donaldson.

"The Cubans failed to take advantage of several chances to score, but in the main Donaldson's pitching was too effective to overcome." - The Standard Union (Brooklyn, New York), Friday, July 5, 1918

Cuban Stars starter Evelio Calderin by no means pitches badly, surrendering three runs on only five hits and one walk with two strikeouts, albeit in a losing effort. Leadoff batter Joe Hewitt leads Brooklyn with two hits and a run scored, shortstop John Henry Lloyd laces a triple and scored a run in four at-bats, and Oliver Marcell accounts for Brooklyn's third and final run. John Donaldson, batting fifth in the lineup, is held hitless in two at-bats.

GAME TWO - Brooklyn's Tom Williams starts the second game, opposed by right-hander Isidro Fabre for the Stars. The visitors jumped out to a 5-0 lead just two and a half innings into the game. All Brooklyn can muster is a run in the bottom half of the third and one other run in the sixth. Joe Hewitt and John Henry Lloyd are the only Royal Giants to cross home. John Donaldson shares time in right field with Irvin Brooks, neither of whom wield a hit. Cuba's Isidro Fabre limits the Giants to just seven hits and no walks with two strikeouts for the win. Stars second baseman Rogelio Crespo, Leon, and Fabre each hit for extra bases. Tom Williams yields five runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a losing effort.

Once Upon A Summer, 1918: John Donaldson Poised To Make Brooklyn/Queens Debut at Dexter Park

The Royal Giants were to have started a western trip but chose to remain here for another week in order to play the Cubans on Thursday and the Lincoln Giants next Sunday. - The Sun (New York), July 1, 1918

On Thursday, July 4, 1918, in what is to be his Brooklyn/Queens debut, John Donaldson was slated to pitch the second game of a twin bill against the Cuban Stars (East) at Dexter Park, the home field of Max Rosner's Bushwick club.

Last Sunday, June 30, while making his East/New York debut, southpaw John Donaldson allows just one run on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts through nine innings pitched and also wields a hit at the plate, albeit in a losing effort against the New York Lincoln Giants at Harlem's Olympic Field. But as fate would have it, Donaldson's mound opponent, Smokey Joe Williams, hurls a two-hit shutout for the win.

The Cuban Stars are managed by the well-respected Pelayo Chacon, now in his third season. John Donaldson's potential mound opponent could be one of three candidates: Juan Padron, Jose Maria Fernandez, or Elevio Calderin.

There can be little doubt Brooklyn's first baseman Rafael Figarola is looking forward to welcoming and competing against his compatriots.

On Sunday, May 30, 1938, within two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Parkways semipros split a double-header with the Cuban Stars at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE: After scoring in the first inning, the Cuban Stars cling to a 2-0 lead through the fifth. Bay Parkway finally breaks through for three runs in the sixth scored by Nolan, Posnack, and McCabe. But their lead does not last. With single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, the Cuban Giants come away with a late 4-3 victory. Bay Parkway starter Sam Nahem goes through the whole repertoire of issuing four walks, fanning seven, hitting a batter, and unleashing a wild pitch in a losing effort. Cuban Stars starter Heliodoro Diaz surrenders three runs on six hits and five walks with two strikeouts for the win. Bay Parkway left eight runners stranded on base. The Cuban Stars catcher is likely to be Julio Rojo.

GAME TWO - Bay Parkway rebounds for a 7-1 victory in game two. Starter Johnny Ubinski limits the Cuban Stars to just one run on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts through nine innings for the win. He also comes to his own cause with a hit and a run scored. Pitching for the Cuban Stars, Jimmenez allows seven runs on seven hits, walks three, and strikes out three in a losing effort. Left fielder Tetelo Vargas drives home catcher Jose Maria Fernandez with the Cuban Stars lone run.

OTD 5/27/1934: Bay Parkway Semipros Drop Double-Header to Cuban Stars at Erasmus Field, Brooklyn

On Sunday, May 27, 1934, less than two miles from where I live, the Cuban Stars East take both games of a doubleheader from the local Bay Parkway semipros at Erasmus Field; present-day McDonald Ave at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE

Times Union (Brooklyn, New York)

Toeing the slab in Game One, Bay Parkway's Jim Smith is opposed by right-hander Rodolfo Fernández for the Cuban Stars. Both teams trade a pair of runs in the first. The visitors then build a 6-3 lead after three and a half. But the Bay Parkways rally for four runs in the home fourth for a 7-6 lead. The score remains unchanged until the eighth, when the Cuban Stars tie the game at seven. In the top of the ninth home runs by second baseman José Abreu and left fielder Lázaro Salazar gives the Cuban Stars a 9-7 lead, their final margin of victory. Rodolfo Fernández yields seven runs on ten hits and no walks with one strikeout for the win. To say Bay Parkways starter Jim Smith lacked control is putting it mildly. Besides allowing nine runs on ten hits, he walks ten, plunks five other batsmen, and strikes out five batters. First baseman Salvador Massip is the third Cuban Star to register multiple hits. Bay Parkways right fielder Caldwell finishes 3 for 4 with a home run.

GAME TWO

GAME TWO: Cuba Stars starter Lázaro Salazar allows the Bay Parkways just five hits but six walks, with two strikeouts in a nine-inning complete-game shutout. Bay Parkways manager Joe Press with great confidence, hands the ball to Harry Kowenhover. But he is roughed up for 13 runs on 13 hits and four walks with five strikeouts and one hit batsman over 8.2 innings pitched for the loss.
