OTD Brooklyn Semipros 10/3/1937: Bay Parkway Dukes and Bay Ridge Club Split Twin Bill at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, October 3, 1937, in a battle for Brooklyn semipro supremacy played out not more than two miles from where I presently live, the visiting Bay Ridge Club and host Bay Parkway Dukes split games of a twin bill at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - Bay Ridge starter Bill Simmons and Harry Eisenstat of Bay Parkway stage a classic pitcher's duel.  Neither pitcher yields a run through the game's first eight innings.  

Eisenstat allows but six hits and strikeouts ten.  He is relieved in the ninth by Johnny Ubinksi, who promptly surrenders the go-ahead run.  Bay Ridge center fielder Babe Fisher tripled to right field and scored on left fielder Vincent Liddy's base hit.  But Bill Simmons does himself no favors in the home ninth by walking two batters and surrendering the game-tying hit by Max Posnack.

Into extra innings, they go at Erasmus Field.

Bill Simmons and Johnny Ubinski duel through two more scoreless frames.  But in the visiting twelfth, Ubinski unleashed a wild pitch permitting the go-ahead run to score from third base.  Afterwhich, Bay Ridge tacks on another.  Simmons retires Bay Parkway in the bottom half of the twelfth for the win.  He holds the Dukes to one on just four hits with seven strikeouts.  Max Posnack accounts for two of the Duke's four hits.  Ubinksi takes the loss.

GAME TWO - Bay Parkway secures a twin bill split in an abbreviated five-inning game called on account of darkness.  Johnny Ubinski again takes the mound and this time limits Bay Ridge to no runs on just two hits with four strikeouts for the win.  Bay Parkway is able to bunch together all three runs in the third.  Lefty Holmes leads the Dukes with two hits and a run scored.

Bay Ridge and Bay Parkway split the season series at two apiece.  The matter of Brooklyn supremacy goes unresolved.  But we really know who's number one ...

On Sunday, August 29, 1937, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League win games of a tightly contested doubleheader against the Bay Parkway Dukes at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line, Brooklyn.

NEGRO NATIONAL LEAGUE

NEWARK EAGLES

GAME ONE - Starting for the Dukes, Phil Mooney is opposed by the familiar right-hander Terris McDuffie who was hurling for Brooklyn two years ago before the Manleys relocated the Eagles to Newark.  The two duel to a one-all tie through nine innings.  Newark scores their run in the second and the Bay Parkways in the fourth.  Afterwhich, the score remains unchanged for the next five innings, and into extra innings, they go at Erasmus Field.

Mooney allows the lone run on just five hits through nine.  After the second, he hurls seven scoreless innings but exits to a no-decision.  He is relieved in the tenth inning by Eddie Bell.  Meanwhile, Terris McDuffie lasts through the twelfth inning, and like Mooney, walks off to a no-decision.  McDuffie, after the fourth twirls eight scoreless innings.  

After enduring another four scoreless frames, the Eagles finally get to Eddie Bell for three runs in the top of the fourteenth inning.  Second baseman Dick Seay doubles, and after a walk issued to shortstop Willie Wells, first baseman Mule Suttles doubles to right field, plating Seay with the game's decisive run.  

Right-hander Leon Day, who entered the game in the thirteenth, tosses two scoreless innings for the win.  Right fielder Ed Stone leads the Eagles with three hits, and third baseman Ray Dandridge

wields two.

GAME TWO - A seven-inning contest is agreed upon.  Newark promptly scores three runs on four hits against Bay Parkway starter Johnny Ubinski in the first inning.  Afterwhich, Ubinski settles in with help from Teddy Wronewic's stellar play in left field, allowing no runs on just three scattered hits over the final six innings.  

However, Leon Day makes Newark's lead stand.  The Dukes manage two runs in the fourth and not much else.  After his relief stint in game one, Leon Day holds Bay Parkway to six hits with three strikeouts over seven innings for the win.  Ed Stone leads the Eagles with two hits, while Mule Suttles, Dick Seay, and center fielder Jimmie Crutchfield crossed home for Newark.  Despite seven strikeouts, Johnny Ubinski takes the hard-luck loss.

On Thursday, August 8, 1940, not more the two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Parkway Dukes defeated the New York Black Yankees at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

The Brooklyn Citizen, Friday, August 9, 1940

Bay Parkway starter Gene Bowe hurls a gem, limiting the Black Yankees to just one late run on seven hits and no walks with twelve strikeouts for the win.  

Visiting left fielder Marvin Barker wields the only extra-base hit against Bowe.  Not until the eighth inning did the Yankees manage to bunch together three hits to spoil the shutout.  Center fielder Charlie Biot was Gene Bowe's twelfth and final strikeout victim who ended the game.  Yankee third baseman  Henry Spearman and first baseman Johnny Washington each wield two hits apiece.  Catcher Johnny Hayes hits safely and scores the Yankees' lone run.

With two runners in scoring position in the home fourth, left fielder Larry Fischer singles in Bay Parkway's first run.  With the bases loaded in the fifth, Yankee starter Purnell Mincy walks Larry Fischer, forcing the runner from third.  In the home eighth, center fielder Pete Gray singles, advances on a walk, steals third, then scores when Yankee reliever Jesse Brown throws errantly on an ill-fated pickoff attempt to first.

Yankees starter Purnell Mincy is nothing short of erratic.  He allows three runs on six hits but walks eight batters in a self-inflicted losing effort.

 

OTD Brooklyn Semipros 7/31/1938: Cuban Stars Blank Bay Parkway Dukes at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, July 31, 1938, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Cuban Stars blanked the Bay Parkway Dukes at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M Station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - Cuban Stars starter Silvino Ruiz limits the Bay Parkways to just three hits (one for extra bases) and five walks with five strikeouts for the win.  The Dukes pose their only credible threat in the eight when left fielder Johnny McAuliffe's double puts two runners into scoring position.  However, Bay Parkway leaves them both stranded in place.  Duke's starter Abe Spiro surrenders five runs on eleven hits and three walks with two strikeouts through nine in a losing effort.  Stars second baseman Rafael Hechevarría goes 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, third baseman Clemente Carreras is 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored, and the first baseman Carlos Blanco is 1 for 4 with a stolen base and two runs scored.

On Sunday, July 30, 1939, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the local Bay Parkway Dukes and Homestead Grays split games of a doubleheader at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M Station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - The visitors take the first tilt by a score of 8 to 2.  Homestead starter Tom Parker limits Bay Parkway to a pair of runs on ten hits and six walks with three strikeouts for the win.  Arlington, the Duke catcher, and Godfrey drive home Bay Parkway's only runs.  Meanwhile, all but shortstop Jelly Jackson hit safely for the Grays, while five batsmen wield multiple hits.  Homestead strikes for 14 total hits.  Playing first base, Josh Gibson is a perfect 3 for 3 with a double, stolen base, and two runs scored, and right fielder David Whatley is 2 for 5 with a stolen base, home run, and two runs batted in.  Joe Stryker relieves McClosky in the sixth but not before the Bay Parkway starter surrenders three runs in the second and four more in the fifth in a losing effort.

GAME TWO - The Dukes and Grays slug their way to a four-all tie after three.  Afterwhich, Bay Parkway starter Abe Spiro settles down to toss four scoreless innings before yielding Homestead's fifth and final run in the eighth.  All told, Spiro allows just eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts for the win.  There was no stopping Josh Gibson, though.  Back behind the plate, Gibson goes 2 for 3 with a double and run batted in.  Gibson completes the twin bill with five hits in six times at-bat.  Grays starting pitcher  Specs Roberts helps his own cause with two runs batted in, which go for naught.  He otherwise surrenders four runs on seven hits, and one walk with a strikeout in only 2.2 innings pitched for the loss.

OTD Brooklyn Semipros 7/27/1941: Mule Suttles Provides Bay Parkways Lesson In Hitting; New York Black Yankees Sweep Twin Bill at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, July 27, 1941, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Parkway Dukes lose both games of a double-header to the New York Black Yankees at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

The Dukes hang tough, losing the first game 9-5 and the second by a more tightly contested 14-12 margin.  But truth be told, Yankees left fielder Mule Suttles was better ... than everybody!  The future Hall of Famer drives home two runs in game one.  Then in game two, twice comes to the plate with the bases loaded; a triple in the fourth clears the bases, and a double in the eighth clears them again. 

Yankees left-hander Neck Stanley earns the victory in game one, and Russ Dedeaux starts game two, but Connie Rector earns the win.  

Bay Parkway's Timmy Adams drives home two-run in game two and extends his consecutive hitting streak to 16 games.  Abe Spiro started game two.

"Mule Suttles, often called the Babe Ruth of Negro baseball paced the Black Yankees heavy onslaught..."

BALTIMORE ELITE GIANTS

Leading 3-1 entering the ninth inning, Bay Parkway shortstop Lou Menendez's misplay of a ground ball clears the way for two unearned runs as the Elites forge a three-all tie.  But Menendez shortly accounts for himself at the bat.  With two outs and a runner on third, Menendez singles to right field, scoring first baseman Ivanicki with the go-ahead run for the victory.

Brooklyn starter Gene Bowe limits Baltimore to three runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk with eleven strikeouts for the victory.  He holds Baltimore to just four hits through the first eight frames.  His mound opponent, Elite Giant starter Bud Barbee walks off to a no-decision, but not before yielding eight walks with six strikeouts.  Southpaw Nate Moreland takes the loss.

Baltimore center fielder Henry Kimbro, right fielder Goose Curry, and catcher Bill Perkins each wield two hits apiece; Curry (triple) and Hoskins (double) for extra bases.  Left fielder Bill Hoskins, third baseman George Scales, and Curry are the only Elite Giants to cross home plate.

Lou Menendez leads the Dukes, going 3 for 5 with a triple, right fielder Maruska is 2 for 3 with a run scored, first baseman Ivanicki goes 2 for 5 and scores the winning run.

OTD Brooklyn Semipros 7/12/1931: Albany Area Native Johnny Day Hurls Gem; Bay Parkways Lose Twin Bill to Detroit Clowns at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, July 12, 1931, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Parkways lose both games of a doubleheader against the Detroit Clowns at Erasmus Field, McDonald Ave at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.  This marks just the second time Manager Lippe's Parkways are swept in a twin bill this season.  Only the New York Black Yankees had accomplished the feat previous to Detroit's arrival in Brooklyn.

"In the first game Johnny Day of the Clowns proved a young twirler with big league possibilities.  Only 21 years old, and playing for the first time away from his hometown near Albany (N.Y.), Day displayed sharp hooks and sweeping curves to turn back the Parkways with only five hits." - The Standard Union (Brooklyn, New York), Monday, July 13, 1931

GAME ONE - Detroit unveils their new young hurler, Johnny Day, who yields just two runs on five hits (one for extra bases) and one walk with six strikeouts through nine innings for the win.  The Parkways ninth-inning rally falls one run short of tying the contest at three.  Day's duel with Brooklyn's Lefty Hinkle lasts through the sixth.  But Detroit's two runs in the seventh inevitably make the difference.  Southpaw Hinkle surrenders three runs on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts in a hard-luck loss.

GAME TWO - Starter Wuzzy Fullerton of the Parkways is pitted against Al Uska for the Clowns.  The two pitchers duel through a 2-1 contest in favor of Detroit through the eighth.  The Clowns then erupt for three runs in the top half of the ninth.  Fullerton yields 5 runs on eleven hits and three walks with no strikeouts for his third loss this season in an otherwise well-pitched game.  In Fullerton's defense, the hitting in support of his effort is minimal.  Clown starter Al Uska, a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, limits the Parkways to one run in the sixth, seven hits, and two walks, with six strikeouts for the win.  Detroit's first baseman Buster Kenny wields two hits in game one and two hits in game two.

OTD in Brooklyn Semipros 6/30/1935: Bay Parkway and Bay Ridge Clubs Draw 6,200 Local Fans

On Sunday, June 30, 1935, not more than two miles east of where I presently live, the Bay Parkway Dukes split games of a doubleheader with the Cuban Stars in front of 2,500 fans at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.  Meanwhile, two miles north of where I presently live, a reported crowd of 3,700 fans watches Bay Ridge split games of their twin bill against the Stroudsburg club from Pennsylvania at Bay Ridge Oval, 15th Avenue at 86th Street.  The two games combined for 6,200 local fans in attendance.  Starting pitcher Al Morris was the day's top star for Bay Parkway, right fielder Mickey Sefchick for Bay Ridge.

OTD 6/14/1931: New York Black Yankees Sweep Double Header From Bay Parkways at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, June 14, 1931, within two miles from where I presently live, the New York Black Yankees win both games of a doubleheader against Joe Rosner's Bay Parkways at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE: Features starter Wuzzy Fullerton for the Bay Parkways pitted against right-hander William Bell for the visitors.  

New York seemingly handles Fullerton's offerings with great comfort and ease, wielding 14 hits, drawing two walks, and striking out only twice before Wuzzy is pulled with two outs in the fifth.  The Yankees resume their assault against reliever Artie Musicant en route to a 16 hit, 16 run trouncing of the local Dukes.  Fullerton is responsible for 14 hits, two walks, with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.  

William Bell himself leads the Black Yankees hit parade with three, as five others finish with two hits apiece: first baseman and manager John Henry Lloyd, left fielder Fats Jenkins, shortstop Bill Riggins, center fielder Clint Thomas, and third baseman Cool Turner who also registers a double, while Jenkins laces a triple.  Otherwise, Bell yields three runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a winning effort.

Bay Parkways' first baseman George Sackett distinguishes himself going 3 for 4 with two home runs off Bell, his 12th and 13th for the season.  In fact, four of Bay Parkways' eight hits go for extra bases.  

GAME TWO:  The Yankees continue where they leave off, hammering out another eleven runs on twelve hits.  They erupt for five runs in the second, five more in the eighth, with a single run in the fifth.  John Henry Lloyd finishes 2 for 3 with a triple; Clint Thomas goes 2 for 3 with a home run; Bill Riggins is 3 for 5 and a home run.  Fats Jenkins scores twice.  

New York starter Red Ryan and Henry McHenry share pitching duties, limiting Joe Rosner's nine to six runs on ten hits and five walks with three strikeouts.  Four of the Dukes' ten hits go for extra bases.  They score twice in the second, rally for three in the fifth, but manage just one more run in the sixth.  O'Grady takes the loss.

The New York Black Yankees exacted their revenge for a twin-bill loss against the Bay Parkways earlier this season.

OTD 6/7/1931: Brooklyn Royal Giants and Bay Parkways Split Games of a Double-Header at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, June 7, 1931, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and the Dukes of Bay Parkway split games of a doubleheader at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - The Parkways stake starting pitcher O'Grady to a 7-0 lead.  O'Grady, in turn, opens with six scoreless innings pitched.  But the Royal Giants finally break through with three runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth.  Trailing 8-5 entering the ninth, the Royal Giants generate a four-run rally en route to a 9-8 victory.  Brooklyn clearly makes the most of their eight hits yielded by O'Grady, who walks nine batters and strikes out two in a losing effort.  The Bay Parkways totaled 14 hits, with six going for extra bases, highlighted by George Sackett's home run against Pritchard, who nonetheless earns the win.

GAME TWO - Within mere outs of winning game one, the Bay Parkways ensure victory in the second contest with eleven runs and the pitching of Fullerton, who limits the Royal Giants to just one run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in a winning effort.  Royal Giants starter Austin surrenders 15 hits, with eight going for extra bases.  He also drilled Fullerton with a pitch, perhaps for good luck.  Left fielder Namon Washington accounts for three of the Royal Giants' six hits.  However, the major highlight of the game is once again Bay Parkway first baseman George Sackett, who swats two more home runs giving three for the day.

George Sackett is one year removed from playing with New York University.  The debate rages as to who among the semipro locals is the best, George Sackett of Bay Parkway or Bushwick first baseman, Eppie Barnes.

OTD 6/4/1939: Brooklyn Semipro Bay Parkways Split Twin Bill With Barton's Nighthawks at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, June 4, 1939, within two miles of where I presently live, the local Bay Parkways split games of a doubleheader with Barton's Nighthawks at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - Bay Parkway opens the scoring.  However, the Nighthawks grab a 3-1 lead after two innings and hold a 4-2 lead through four.  Bay Parkway ties the game at four with two runs in the sixth, including a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Arlington, the backstop.  The game remains knotted through the eighth.  Then with two runners on base in the home ninth, Bay Parkways first baseman Max Posnack doubles, one bounce over the right field fence driving home the winning run.  Spiro and Buster Lavac join together to limit the Nighthawks to seven hits, three going for extra bases, six walks, and four strikeouts.  Lavac earns the win.

GAME TWO - Bob Miller toes the slab for Barton's Nighthawks and is opposed by Bay Parkways left-hander Jimmy McCloskey.  When Bay Parkway takes a 1-0 lead in the third, the Nighthawks tie it in the fifth.  When the Parkways go ahead 2-1 in the eighth, the Barton Nines rally in the ninth, tying the game at two.  They play a scoreless tenth inning.  However, Jimmy McCloskey is forced to exit due to injury and is relieved by Buster Lavac.  After trading runs in the eleventh, the Nighthawks finally put two runs between them and their hosts for a 12-inning 5-3 victory and twin bill split at Erasmus Field.  This time, Buster Lavac suffers the loss.

On Sunday, May 30, 1938, within two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Parkways semipros split a double-header with the Cuban Stars at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE:  After scoring in the first inning, the Cuban Stars cling to a 2-0 lead through the fifth.  Bay Parkway finally breaks through for three runs in the sixth scored by Nolan, Posnack, and McCabe.  But their lead does not last.  With single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, the Cuban Giants come away with a late 4-3 victory.  Bay Parkway starter Sam Nahem goes through the whole repertoire of issuing four walks, fanning seven, hitting a batter, and unleashing a wild pitch in a losing effort.  Cuban Stars starter Heliodoro Diaz surrenders three runs on six hits and five walks with two strikeouts for the win.  Bay Parkway left eight runners stranded on base.  The Cuban Stars catcher is likely to be Julio Rojo.

GAME TWO - Bay Parkway rebounds for a 7-1 victory in game two.  Starter Johnny Ubinski limits the Cuban Stars to just one run on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts through nine innings for the win.  He also comes to his own cause with a hit and a run scored.  Pitching for the Cuban Stars, Jimmenez allows seven runs on seven hits, walks three, and strikes out three in a losing effort.   Left fielder Tetelo Vargas drives home catcher Jose Maria Fernandez with the Cuban Stars lone run.

On Sunday, May 27, 1934, less than two miles from where I live, the Cuban Stars East take both games of a doubleheader from the local Bay Parkway semipros at Erasmus Field; present-day McDonald Ave at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE

Times Union (Brooklyn, New York)

Toeing the slab in Game One, Bay Parkway's Jim Smith is opposed by right-hander Rodolfo Fernández for the Cuban Stars.  Both teams trade a pair of runs in the first.  The visitors then build a 6-3 lead after three and a half.  But the Bay Parkways rally for four runs in the home fourth for a 7-6 lead.  The score remains unchanged until the eighth, when the Cuban Stars tie the game at seven.  In the top of the ninth home runs by second baseman José Abreu and left fielder Lázaro Salazar gives the Cuban Stars a 9-7 lead, their final margin of victory.  Rodolfo Fernández yields seven runs on ten hits and no walks with one strikeout for the win.  To say Bay Parkways starter Jim Smith lacked control is putting it mildly.  Besides allowing nine runs on ten hits, he walks ten, plunks five other batsmen, and strikes out five batters.  First baseman Salvador Massip is the third Cuban Star to register multiple hits. Bay Parkways right fielder Caldwell finishes 3 for 4 with a home run.

GAME TWO

Times Union (Brooklyn, New York)

GAME TWO: Cuba Stars starter Lázaro Salazar allows the Bay Parkways just five hits but six walks, with two strikeouts in a nine-inning complete-game shutout.  Bay Parkways manager Joe Press with great confidence, hands the ball to Harry Kowenhover.  But he is roughed up for 13 runs on 13 hits and four walks with five strikeouts and one hit batsman over 8.2 innings pitched for the loss.
