OTD in the Bronx 9/24/1922: Joe "Cyclone" Williams Earns Relief Win in Game One of New York Lincoln Giants Twin Bill Sweep Over Original Bacharach Giants of Atlantic City

From the desk: THE BRONX GAME

On Sunday, September 24, 1922, before a robust crowd of 10,000 fans, the New York Lincoln Giants sweep both games of a twin bill against the Original Bacharach Giants of Atlantic City at the Catholic Protectory Oval, Bronx.

GAME ONE is a tightly contested affair.  Left-hander Sam Streeter toes the slab for Atlantic City and is opposed by Charlie Bradford for the Lincolns.  The Bacharachs promptly take a 1-0 lead in the first.  After a scoreless second, the teams traded single runs in the third.  Then after a scoreless fourth, Lincoln center fielder, Jules Thomas homers off Streeter tying the game at two.  The score remains unchanged through the eighth inning.  Charlie Bradford exits to a no-decision after a representative effort.  Right-hander and future Hal of Famer Joe "Cyclone" Williams enters in relief and hurls a scoreless top half of the ninth.  The Lincoln Giants then push across the winning run in the bottom half of the frame, giving Smokey Joe the victory.

GAME TWO is called after seven innings because of darkness.  This time it is the Lincoln Giants who open the scoring in the first.  The home team then erupts for five runs in the third inning, highlighted by catcher Doc Wiley's home run, giving the Bronxmen a 6-0 lead.  Lincoln starter Shang Johnson makes the lead stand, allowing only single runs in the fourth and late in the seventh for the win.  Atlantic City right-hander Joe Wheeler takes the loss.

The Orginal Bacharachs Giants were formed in Atlantic City for the 1922 season in response to the main team members, now being bankrolled by former Brooklyn Royal Giants owner John W. Connor, making the calculated decision to compete for profits within New York City and surrounding areas.  This team is managed by John Henry Lloyd whereas the Original Bacharachs are piloted by Dick Lundy.

Nearby at Bronx Oval, before a crowd of 7,000, John Henry Lloyd's Bacharach Giants took both games of a doubleheader against the local Bronx Giants.  Bacharach right-hander Dick "Cannonball" Redding twirled a 4-0 shutout in the first game.  Right-hander Roy Roberts endures more difficulty in the second game, but the Bacharachs ultimately win out 11 to 8 for the sweep. - New York Age
