OTD 7/5/1922: Brooklyn Royal Giants In A Romp Over Fairbanks Nine, Vermont

On Wednesday, July 5, 1922, the Brooklyn Royal Giants venture north into Vermont, defeating the local Fairbanks nine.

"The Brooklyn Royal Giants added one more victim to their long list of barnstorming successes when they pummelled and thumped two Fairbanks A.A. pitchers to all corners of the campus and won a slugfest, 16 to 2.  Were there no dark line in the big league, there would certainly be several colored brethren from this Flatbush nine up in the American and National organizations.  The Brooklyn Royal Giants were easily the fastest dusky baseball outfit that ever appeared in Northern Vermont.  They simply outclassed the locals in every department of the game ... outclassed just as any baseball club now in Vermont." - The Caledonian-Record

BROOKLYN ROYAL GIANTS

With Brooklyn already leading 5-2 after six, all a dismayed Manager Hoernle can do was look on as Eddie Douglass' seventh-inning home run against Reed appears to still be on the climb as it leaves the field of play, then again as the Royal Giants bat-around against reliever Cuddy Murphy for another six runs scored in the eighth.  

All told, the Giants amass 21 hits in 41 at-bats, yet only three go for extra bases.  All nine Giant batters wield at least one hit, seven of whom post multiple hits.  Left fielder Irvin Brooks goes 3 for 6 with two doubles; Sam Mongin, Bob Scott, Eddie Douglass, and Wagner also register three hits.  

Starter String Bean Williams laces two hits during Brooklyn's six-run eighth.  Williams allows just two runs on twelve hits and two walks with seven strikeouts through nine innings for the win on the mound.

Fairbanks' first baseman Frank McLaughlin goes 3 for 4, and second baseman Ted Butler goes 3 for 5; together, they account for half of Fairbanks' twelve hits.  Catcher Tommy Starr and McLaughlin score their only runs.  Reed yields 13 hits and two walks, one wild pitch, and strikes out five before getting yanked in the seventh.

OTD 6/5/1917: Brooklyn Royal Giants Split Twin Bill With New York Lincoln Giants at Ridgewood Field

On Tuesday, June 5, 1917, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and New York Lincoln Giants split games of a doubleheader at Ridgewood Park, Irving Avenue at Halsey Street.

Game One features Cyclone Joe Williams pitching for New York pitted against String Bean Williams for Brooklyn.  No mound artistry in this game, as both teams join together for 31 total hits.  Joe Williams highlights New York's offensive by hitting for the cycle.  Center fielder and leadoff batter Spottswood Poles also connects on four hits, one for a double, with two runs scored.  Catcher Doc Wiley wields three hits.  Right fielder Blainey Hall and second baseman Ted Kimbro also register multiple hits.  All told, String Bean Williams allows 13 runs on 18 hits and no walks and no strikeouts in a losing effort.  Smokey Joe Williams allows Brooklyn eleven runs on 13 hits and seven walks with one strikeout for the chaotic win.  Center fielder Charles Earle leads Brooklyn with three runs scored.  Pearl Webster has two hits, including a double; second baseman Bill Handy and third baseman Bill Kindle also post multiple hits, including a triple each.

Game Two has New York right-hander Lee Wade opposed by Brooklyn's Lefty Harvey in a seven-inning affair.  The Royal Giants' southpaw limits the Lincoln Giants to just four hits.  After yielding three runs in the first, including extra-base hits from shortstop Dick Wallace and Ted Kimbro, Harvey hurls a gem over the final six innings, walking six and twice striking out Spottswood Poles for the win.  Brooklyn musters nine runs on ten hits and two base-on-balls facing Harvey, who strikes out four in a losing effort.  Playing first base, Louis Santop has a hit, a stolen base, and two runs scored.  Bill Kindle also scores two runs.  Pearl Webster, right fielder Johnny Pugh, and catcher Ernest Gatewood each post two hits apiece.

Bushwick Foils String Bean Williams' Shutout Effort To No Avail

The Royal Giants defeat Bushwick with great efficiency.  Winning right-hander String Bean Williams limits Bushwick to just one run on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts through nine innings pitched.  First baseman Freddie Hohman scores Bushwick's only run in the ninth to spoil the shutout.  Otherwise, the visitors leave twelve runners on base.  Game one loser Jim McGarry yields eight runs on eight hits, including doubles by String Bean Williams and shortstop Joe Hewitt, and a home run off the bat of catcher Luis Santop.  It is said Santop's home run cleared the right field fence by several yards.  Right fielder Johnny Pugh made a great rally-killing catch while crashing into the outfield fence.

Bushwick Starter Eddie Girard Scores Late Decision Over Maywood Brown

Bushwick gets the better of Royal Giants starter Maywood Brown in game two, striking for five runs on nine hits, including three for extra bases by starter pitcher Eddie Girard, second baseman Taguer, and Freddie Hohman.  Maywood Brown is demonstrably wild with eight walks but appearing just as fearsome with seven strikeouts, albeit in a losing effort.  Bushwick unknots a three-all tie with two runs in the sixth en route to a 5-3 victory.  Winning pitcher Eddie Girard allows three runs on seven hits, including two for extra bases.  Royal Giants catcher Luis Santop goes 1 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.  Center fielder Charles Earle and Maywood Brown lead the Giants with two hits apiece.
