OTD in Kings County 8/8/1914: Brooklyn Royal Giants Defeat New York Police at Suburban Oval, McDonald Avenue at 16th Ave

On Saturday, August 8, 1914, not more than three miles from where I presently live, the Brooklyn Royal Giants defeat the New York Police, 3 to 2, at Suburban Oval, McDonald Avenue at 16th Ave.

BROOKLYN ROYAL GIANTS

Hurling for the Police, Metzer limits the Royal Giants to just three hits (all singles) and three walks with three strikeouts and nary a base theft.  However, the Giants bunch together three runs in the top of the third inning.  

Royal Giant starter Lefty Harvey makes it stand.  Howling Harvey yields single runs in the bottom half of the third and fourth innings on seven total hits and one walk with three strikeouts for the win.  Lefty also helps himself out at the plate wielding one of three team hits; first baseman Pearl Webster also hits safely and scores.  Second baseman Charles Earle accounts for Brooklyn's remaining hit and Jesse Bragg Brooklyn's third run.

The New York Police strand seven runners on base, and the Royal Giants left six.  Each team commits just one error in an otherwise tightly contested game.

OTD 6/13/1914: Richard "Lefty" Harvey Strikes Out 17 Batters; Brooklyn Royal Giants Defeat Camden A.C.

Richard "Lefty" Harvey Strikes Out 17 Batters

On Saturday, June 13, 1914, the Brooklyn Royal Giants venture into New Jersey where they are met with little resistance by the Camden A.C.

Starting for Brooklyn, Richard "Lefty" Harvey allows just five hits, all singles, en route to a complete-game shutout effort for the win.  Harvey strikes out seventeen Camden batters.  In fact, no Brooklyn outfielder makes a putout and only third baseman Jesse Bragg registers an infield assist.  First baseman Phil Bradley completes six putouts at first base, and catcher Pearl Webster is credited with 18 putouts.  Brooklyn commits no errors albeit in a limited number of chances.

Center fielder Jules Thomas, left fielder Jimmie Lyons, and Jesse Bragg all post multiple hits.  Brooklyn scores six runs on eight hits but exploits Camden with nine stolen bases.

OTD 6/5/1917: Brooklyn Royal Giants Split Twin Bill With New York Lincoln Giants at Ridgewood Field

On Tuesday, June 5, 1917, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and New York Lincoln Giants split games of a doubleheader at Ridgewood Park, Irving Avenue at Halsey Street.

Game One features Cyclone Joe Williams pitching for New York pitted against String Bean Williams for Brooklyn.  No mound artistry in this game, as both teams join together for 31 total hits.  Joe Williams highlights New York's offensive by hitting for the cycle.  Center fielder and leadoff batter Spottswood Poles also connects on four hits, one for a double, with two runs scored.  Catcher Doc Wiley wields three hits.  Right fielder Blainey Hall and second baseman Ted Kimbro also register multiple hits.  All told, String Bean Williams allows 13 runs on 18 hits and no walks and no strikeouts in a losing effort.  Smokey Joe Williams allows Brooklyn eleven runs on 13 hits and seven walks with one strikeout for the chaotic win.  Center fielder Charles Earle leads Brooklyn with three runs scored.  Pearl Webster has two hits, including a double; second baseman Bill Handy and third baseman Bill Kindle also post multiple hits, including a triple each.

Game Two has New York right-hander Lee Wade opposed by Brooklyn's Lefty Harvey in a seven-inning affair.  The Royal Giants' southpaw limits the Lincoln Giants to just four hits.  After yielding three runs in the first, including extra-base hits from shortstop Dick Wallace and Ted Kimbro, Harvey hurls a gem over the final six innings, walking six and twice striking out Spottswood Poles for the win.  Brooklyn musters nine runs on ten hits and two base-on-balls facing Harvey, who strikes out four in a losing effort.  Playing first base, Louis Santop has a hit, a stolen base, and two runs scored.  Bill Kindle also scores two runs.  Pearl Webster, right fielder Johnny Pugh, and catcher Ernest Gatewood each post two hits apiece.
