OTD 7/5/1922: Brooklyn Royal Giants In A Romp Over Fairbanks Nine, Vermont

On Wednesday, July 5, 1922, the Brooklyn Royal Giants venture north into Vermont, defeating the local Fairbanks nine.

"The Brooklyn Royal Giants added one more victim to their long list of barnstorming successes when they pummelled and thumped two Fairbanks A.A. pitchers to all corners of the campus and won a slugfest, 16 to 2.  Were there no dark line in the big league, there would certainly be several colored brethren from this Flatbush nine up in the American and National organizations.  The Brooklyn Royal Giants were easily the fastest dusky baseball outfit that ever appeared in Northern Vermont.  They simply outclassed the locals in every department of the game ... outclassed just as any baseball club now in Vermont." - The Caledonian-Record

BROOKLYN ROYAL GIANTS

With Brooklyn already leading 5-2 after six, all a dismayed Manager Hoernle can do was look on as Eddie Douglass' seventh-inning home run against Reed appears to still be on the climb as it leaves the field of play, then again as the Royal Giants bat-around against reliever Cuddy Murphy for another six runs scored in the eighth.  

All told, the Giants amass 21 hits in 41 at-bats, yet only three go for extra bases.  All nine Giant batters wield at least one hit, seven of whom post multiple hits.  Left fielder Irvin Brooks goes 3 for 6 with two doubles; Sam Mongin, Bob Scott, Eddie Douglass, and Wagner also register three hits.  

Starter String Bean Williams laces two hits during Brooklyn's six-run eighth.  Williams allows just two runs on twelve hits and two walks with seven strikeouts through nine innings for the win on the mound.

Fairbanks' first baseman Frank McLaughlin goes 3 for 4, and second baseman Ted Butler goes 3 for 5; together, they account for half of Fairbanks' twelve hits.  Catcher Tommy Starr and McLaughlin score their only runs.  Reed yields 13 hits and two walks, one wild pitch, and strikes out five before getting yanked in the seventh.

OTD 6/16/1922: Brooklyn Royal Giants Defeat Asbury Park Meadowbrooks

On Friday, June 16, 1921, the Brooklyn Royal Giants, with a 7-2 victory, spoil the Asbury Park Meadowbrooks season opener at Athletic Grounds, New Jersey.

Brooklyn starter Otis Starks limits the Meadowbrooks to a pair of runs on just four hits and six walks with four strikeouts in a winning effort.  Ashbury Park's scoring comes on a two-run inside the park home run by Heath, the first baseman, in the fifth.

On the mound for the Meadowbrooks, Huntley yields seven runs on twelve hits.  Second baseman Irvin Brooks accounts for Brooklyn's lone extra-base hit.  Otherwise, Huntley walks three and strikes out one in a losing effort.  Royal Giants' left fielder Bob Scott goes 3 for 4 with a run scored, and first baseman and manager Eddie Douglas likewise wields three hits in four at-bats, with three runs scored.  Third baseman Johnson Hill and right fielder Jesse Hubbard account for two his each.  

OTD 6/4/1924: Smokey Joe Williams Hurls Brooklyn Royals Giants to Victory Over Allentown Dukes

On Wednesday, June 4, 1924, the Brooklyn Royal Giants defeated the Dukes at Allentown Park, Pennsylvania.  Pitching for the Royal Giants, Smokey Joe Williams limits the Allentown Dukes to one run on six hits, including extra-base hits by the center fielder Moran and catcher Joe Hyde who drives home the Dukes only run, thus spoiling the shutout back in the third.   Otherwise, Cyclone Williams allowed no hits after the third inning while issuing no walks and striking out seven through nine complete innings pitched.  In fact, Allentown's only base runner after the third, Joe Guiterez, was picked off first base by Williams.  Brooklyn jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the third on run-scoring doubles by second baseman Bunny Downs and captain Eddie Douglas.  Catcher Charlie Spearman leads the Giants with three hits, including Brooklyn's third extra-base hit.  Third baseman Johnson Hill drives home Brooklyn's third and final run in the sixth.  Left fielder Bob Scott, center fielder Jules Thomas, and Downs each score a run apiece.  Allentown starter Weldon Wychoff yields eleven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a losing effort.

The largest-ever crowd being reported for a baseball game at Dexter Park witnesses Max Rosner's Bushwicks sweep a double-header from the rival Eddie Johnson-managed Brooklyn Royal Giants.

Game one is a tightly contested affair.  Ralph Carlstrom toes the slab for Bushwick, opposed by the Royal Giants right-hander Jesse "Mountain" Hubbard, who strikes out the first three batters he faces.  The pitchers trade zeroes until the fourth.  A double to center by left fielder Bob Scott and a single by Eddie Johnson stake the Royal Giants to a 1-0 lead, but it is short-lived.  An error by shortstop Irvin Brooks ultimately results in an unearned run and a tie game in the bottom half of the frame.  Until the sixth, when second baseman and Bushwicks captain Joe Weiss connects off Mountain Hubbard on a two-run home run hit deep into the overflow crowd stationed in straightaway center field.  The Royal Giants generate a late run in the eighth on singles by third baseman Louis Miller, Bob Scott, and Brooks.  But it's too little too late.  A stellar catch in left field by Johnny Menzel is key in quelling any further threat; the large crowd uproariously expressed their appreciation.  Winning pitcher Ralph Carlstrom issues just one walk and five hits through nine.  Jesse Hubbard takes the loss upon yielding three runs on eight hits (one home run), no walks, and eight strikeouts.

Bushwick romps to victory in game two.  John Harris starts for the Royal Giants and is treated rather roughly.  He yields ten runs on twelve hits, three going for extra bases, six walks, and four strikeouts through eight innings pitched.  Harris also hits his mound opponent with a pitch which does little to hinder winning pitcher Jimmy Clinton from limiting the Giants to a pair of late runs on just six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Five Bushwick batters post multiple hits.  Only Harris of the Giants registers two hits; left fielder Bob Scott scores both Giants runs.
