OTD 8/15/1928: Dick "Cannonball" Redding Hurls Three-Hit Shutout as Brooklyn Royal Giants Defeat Burlington, VT

From the desk: DEM BARNSTORMERS

On Wednesday, August 15, 1928, in a tightly contested affair, the Brooklyn Royal Giants defeated the local Burlington team at South Park, Vermont.

Facing Burlington starter Doc Newton in the third, Royal second baseman Charlie Smith reaches safely on a dropped third strike and immediately advances to second on an errant throw to first by Nadolan, the Burlington catcher.  Center fielder Irvin Brooks then lashes a single to center field scoring Smith.

The score remains unchanged through the eighth inning.

In the visitor's ninth, Irvin Brooks wields his third hit of the game, a home run deep over the center-field wall giving the Royal Giants a 2-0 lead and the final margin of victory.

In a tough-luck loss, Doc Newton yields one earned run on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Royal Giant first baseman Robert Hudspeth wields two hits, and right fielder Country Brown accounts for the last of Brooklyn's six hits.

Eighteen-year veteran and Brooklyn great Dick "Cannonball" Redding allowed Burlington a mere three hits and no walks with three strikeouts in a complete-game shutout performance.
