On Thursday, August 9, 1906, despite Billy Holland's 16-strikeout performance, the Brooklyn Royal Giants are defeated by the Manchester baseball club at the Flower Street Grounds, Connecticut.
Staked to a three-run lead, Brooklyn starting pitcher Billy Holland twirls superbly through seven, allowing no runs and striking out ten batters.
Manchester starter Eddie Collins then comes to his own rescue. Kennedy reaches safely and advances to second on shortstop Grant Johnson's errant throw to first with one out in the eighth. After which, Eddie Collins doubled home Kennedy and scored after a series of infield mishaps and another errant throw, this time by first baseman Chappie Johnson. Taylor, the Manchester center fielder, then steals home tying the game at three.
The score remains unchanged through the tenth inning.
Brooklyn seizes the lead with a run in the top half of the eleventh. But with one out in the home half of the frame and a baserunner on second, Billy Holland hits a batter, then yields a game-tying double to Kelley, the third baseman. After Holland strikes out Messenger, the right fielder, catcher Joe Casey, singles through the right side of the diamond, plating the shortstop Gilmartin with the winning run.
Incredibly, Billy Holland allows just five overall hits and one walk with 16 total strikeouts over ten-plus innings pitched, albeit in a losing effort.
Meanwhile, Eddie Collins limits the Royal Giants to four runs on eleven hits and two walks with three strikeouts for the win.
Right fielder Eugene Milliner homers for Brooklyn. Catcher Robert Footes leads the Giants with three hits, and Grant Johnson finishes 2 for 4 with a run scored.
