Germany Smith Wields Decisive Hit; Tom Lovett Earns the Win

The disgust of the 2,800 cranks present at Eclipse Park was palpable.  Starter Ed Daily pitched well, limiting the Bridegrooms to five hits.  But were it not for five errors - most costly by the third baseman 

Harry Raymond - perhaps Louisville would have won.  The home team opened the scoring in the first on Farmer Weaver's clean hit, but Brooklyn moved ahead in the second when George Pinkney scurried home on an errant throw, and Adonis Terry scored on a wild pitch.  Farmer Weaver came through again with a base hit in the third, tying the game at two.  Afterwhich, Harry Raymond's error in the fourth inning proved decisive as shortstop Germany Smith singled to center field, driving in two unearned runs for a 4-2 Brooklyn lead.  The Bridegrooms scored yet another unearned run in the sixth.  Starter Tom Lovett held Louisville scoreless for five innings until surrendering one last run in the ninth.  Lovett yielded six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts for the win.  Germany Smith accounted for two of Brooklyn's five hits, including a triple.  Umpire McQuaide's call in the fourth was also a source of local fan consternation.

Tom Lovett Hurls Bridegrooms Closer to the Pennant

Like the Bridegrooms themselves, right-hander Tom Lovett continues winnings games at a circuit-leading rate.  In response to Friday's loss upon arrival to West Side Park, the Groom's ace held the Colts to a mere four hits - including an 0 for 4 performance from first baseman and team captain Cap Anson - while issuing four walks and striking out four through nine scoreless innings for the shutout victory, his 28th this season against eight losses.  Colt starter Bill Hutchison - leading the league in wins and innings pitched - had his offerings swatted to various parts of the field.  Second baseman Hub Collins led Brooklyn's ten-hit charge going 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, and shortstop 

Germany Smith stroked two hits and crossed home three times.  Lovett and Adonis Terry joined the hit parade with two apiece.  Meanwhile, formerly second-place Boston lost both games of a twin bill at Cleveland and now trails the Colts by one-half game.  Whereas Byrne's sluggers now own a six-game lead ahead of Chicago with seven left to play.  The Bridegrooms and Colts will play their rubber game on Monday.  Afterwhich, Brooklyn will move on to Cincinnati, Cleveland, and end the season at Pittsburgh.

Adonis Terry Gets Pounded; Bridegrooms Lose Sixth Out of Last Eight Games

The Bridegrooms arrived at a chilly reception in Chicago.  On a cold day at West Side Park, Anson's Colts sprinted to a 7-0 lead against Adonis Terry by the fourth.  They tallied another in the sixth and twice more in the eighth.  Despite seven strikeouts, Chicago pounded Terry for five earned runs on fourteen hits and scored five other times because of seven Brooklyn errors led by second baseman Hub Collins and shortstop Germany Smith responsible for four.  After being held scoreless through the fourth, the Bridegrooms mustered four runs on three hits in the fifth, and Colts' rookie pitcher Pat Luby would yield one more in the eighth.  Third baseman George Pinkney and Bob Caruthers accounted for themselves with two hits each.  The game was suspended after the eighth inning due to darkness.  Brooklyn's circuit lead over idle Boston is reduced to five with eight games left to play.

Brooklyn Takes Season Series From New York Giants

With both teams returning from a two-day break, the rivalry between the Bridegrooms and Giants resumed this day at the Polo Grounds.  The docket called for two games, but Jupiter Pluvius thought differently.  Shortly after 2:00 pm, the Giants staked Amos Rusie to a 2-0 lead with a pair of hits against 

Adonis Terry and an error by Germany Smith at short.  Afterwhich, rain delayed the start of the second inning and continued beyond the half-hour time limit.  Umpire Lynch canceled the game in hopes game two would start at 4:00 pm.  The call to play ball was made, and Amos Rusie and Adonis Terry returned to the box.  This time, the Bridegrooms seized a 6-1 lead in the first inning on five hits and an error by Jack Glasscock at short.  Brooklyn led 8-3 through the sixth.  But after New York scored a run in the seventh, Jupiter Pluvius ended play for the day.  Adonis Terry limited the Giants to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts for his twentieth win this season.  Third baseman George Pinkney and Bob Caruthers each wielded two hits and batted in a run.  Brooklyn takes the season series from New York, ten games to eight.

Bridegrooms Stage Ninth Inning Rally for Series Sweep 

With their fate seemingly sealed by Pittsburgh in the eighth, the Bridegrooms rallied for three ninth-inning runs to complete the series sweep of the Alleghenys and win their seventh consecutive contest in a row.  Facing Bob Caruthers, the visitors plated a pair of runs in the second and one in the third.  But Brooklyn clawed back with two runs in the bottom half of the third.  Afterwhich, the score remained unchanged until the Alleghenys notched an insurance run in the eighth.  Caruthers helped his cause by knocking home Bob Clark and Germany Smith in the home ninth, then scored the game-winning run from third when Pittsburgh novice starter Bill Day unleashed a wild pitch.

Oyster Burns Knocks Home Winning Run in Tenth

With over 4,000 fans in attendance, another hotly contested match unfolded at Washington Park.  In a rematch of game one, Bill Hutchison toed the slab for Chicago with Tom Lovett hurling for Brooklyn.  The Bridegrooms jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second, but the Colts evened the score with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.  Brooklyn reclaimed the lead in the seventh.  However, a fielding error by 

Hub Collins in the ninth contributed to the Colts tying the game at three.  Collins redeemed himself with a leadoff double in the tenth inning and then scored on an Oyster Burns base hit for the win.  Shortstop 

Germany Smith had two hits, including a triple, and Tom Lovett earned his 21st victory.

Tom Lovett Hurls Shutout Against Cap Anson's Colts

The Bridegrooms welcomed the Chicago Colts to Washington Park.  Visiting starter Bill Hutchison 

pitched well, limiting Brooklyn to five hits and one walk.  But with two outs in the third, second baseman Hub Collins drew a base on balls, stole second, and scored on George Pinkney's base hit to left field.  The run proved decisive as Tom Lovett hurled a gem, allowing just three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over nine scoreless innings for his twentieth win this season.  Chicago first baseman and captain Cap Anson was held hitless.  The Bridegrooms added to their lead in the fourth.  First baseman Dave Foutz singled and scored, and Germany Smith delivered home two.  Cap Anson was critical of the Bridegrooms back in June but seems to have altered his opinion.

Adonis Terry Holds On For Series Opening Victory Over Second-Place Boston Beaneaters

A crowd of nearly four thousand fans at South End Grounds watched their team's ascent up the standings brought to an abrupt halt by the visitors from Brooklyn.  In a hotly contested affair, Dave Foutz's first-inning triple delivered home George Pinkney, and a series of throwing gaffes allowed Germany Smith to score in the second.  Boston recovered a run in the bottom half of the frame, then seized a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the third.  But it did not last as the Bridegrooms erupted for five decisive runs in the fourth.  With one out and the bases full, catcher Bob Clark singled home a run, and Hub Collins knocked in two.  Pinkney followed with a single, driving home Clark, and a throwing error by second baseman Pop Smith permitted Hub Collins to score as well.  Brooklyn starter Adonis Terry yielded a run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the sixth, including a home run by second sacker Paul Hines, but held the Beaneaters scoreless over the final three innings to secure the win and earn his thirteenth victory this season.

Adonis Terry Hurls Gem at Polo Grounds

The Bridegrooms visited the Polo Grounds for their fourth series showdown this season against the Giants.  Facing rookie New York star Amos Rusie for the seventh time, Brooklyn opened the scoring in the second.  First baseman Dave Foutz knocked home a run, and Tom Daly scored on a wild pitch.  Unable to solve Adonis Terry's offerings, the score remained unchanged until the sixth.  However, it was Brooklyn who added to their ledger.  Terry helped his cause with a double that sent home George Pinkney.  Foutz then scored on a sac-fly to left field, and a base hit from Germany Smith delivered Terry, giving Brooklyn a 5-0 lead and the final margin of victory.  Perhaps his finest outing to date, Adonis Terry yielded just five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts for the shutout victory, his twelfth win this season.  Shortstop Jack Glasscock accounted for two of New York's hits.  Foutz and Daly wielded two hits each.  The contest sounded as if half of the 2,059 cranks present at the Polo Grounds hailed from the City of Churches.

Boston Beaneaters vs. BROOKLYN BRIDEGROOMS

Oyster Burns Leads Brooklyn's Rout of Beaneaters

The Bridegrooms were at it again, amassing double-digit runs and securing their eighth straight win.  But their two-game sweep of the Beaneaters came at a cost.  Boston opened the scoring in the top of the second.  With the bases loaded in the bottom half, Germany Smith's knock to right field delivered home two.  Second baseman Hub Collins then drove home Smith giving the Bridegrooms a 3-1 lead.  The Beaneaters tied the score at three in the top of the fifth.  This was when starter Tom Lovett sustained an injury on a comebacker through the box, which struck the index finger of his pitching hand, splitting the nail and cutting skin.  Mr. McGunnigle summoned Bob Caruthers to relieve Lovett.  Brooklyn bunched four hits in the bottom of the fourth, with Oyster Burns delivering home a pair as part of a four-run burst.  Caruthers then held the Beaneaters scoreless until yielding two runs in the ninth.  Meanwhile, Byrne's sluggers continued piling on.  In the sixth, Oyster Burns hit for the circuit with two runners on base.  Not yet done, the 'Grooms added four more in the seventh, with Oyster Burns driving home another two runs for a 14-5 final score.  For the moment, it's unknown when Tom Lovett will be fit to pitch again.  In a separate matter, the second-place Philadelphia Phillies are interested in outfielder John "Pop" Corkhill, who was released by Brooklyn.

Bridegrooms Defeated Upon Arrival at Indianapolis

The Bridegrooms continued their bumpy road trip with an opening loss against the Spiders at the team's secondary grounds in Indianapolis.  Brooklyn and Cleveland traded early runs, the Spiders in the first and the Bridegrooms in the second.  An error by first baseman Dave Foutz helped the Spiders post a pair in the top half of the third.  In the bottom half, Cleveland southpaw Ed Beatin walked a batter to force in a run, and with the bases still loaded, Dave Foutz's knock to center field delivered home two runs for a 4-3 Bridegroom lead.  However, it was short-lived.  In the home sixth, the Spiders erupted for four runs, then capped off the scoring with another in the ninth.  Ed Beatin held Brooklyn scoreless over the final six innings of play for the win.  Shortstop Germany Smith accounted for two of Brooklyn's five hits.  Right-hander Bob Caruthers allowed eight runs on twelve hits and four walks in sustaining his eighth loss this season.

Bridegrooms Take Opener Against First-Place Reds

The National League's top two contenders reconvened at Washington Park.  Cincinnati and their hosts promptly traded runs in the first inning.  Second baseman Hub Collins drew a leadoff walk and soon scored on Oyster Burns's sacrifice fly.  In the second inning, starter Bob Caruthers retired the Reds on just three pitches.  However, the Reds bunched together three hits to retake a one-run lead in the third.  Afterwhich, the score remained unchanged through the sixth.  To the delight of the 3,114 fans, runs batted in by Germany Smith, Hub Collins, and George Pinkney gave the Bridegrooms a 4-3 lead.  Bob Caruthers then aided his own cause by driving in a run in the eighth, giving Brooklyn a 5-3 final margin of victory.  Caruthers issued no walks and struck out a pair for the win.  With the victory, Byrnes' Bridegrooms tied a season-high with their eighth consecutive victory and are now within one-half game of first place.

The visiting Bridegrooms saved their best for last.  But not before Chicago treated them to a display of power.  To the delight of 2,650 fans, first baseman Cap Anson homered to left field in the second, and center fielder Walt Wilmot hit for the circuit in the fourth.  The Colts tallied again in the fifth and one last time in the eighth inning.  However, by then, it was too little too late for the Colts.  In the sixth inning, second baseman Hub Collins doubled and scored the first Bridegroom run.  With the bases loaded in the seventh, Hub Collins delivered home two runs with a single.  With the bases again loaded in the eighth, Germany Smith singled, driving home two, and starter Bob Caruthers aided his own cause by driving home a third.  Not yet done, Hub Collins ignited another two-run rally in the ninth as the Bridegrooms doubled up on the Colts by a final score of eight to four.  Collins led all batters with three hits, and Caruthers allowed eight hits and just one walk for the win.  With the victory, the Bridegrooms manage a series split against the Colts and will take the field next at Cincinnati on Monday.

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Germany Smith Powers Bridegrooms to First National League Victory at Chicago

Chicago opened the scoring in the second inning, but it was the last lead they would own.  Brooklyn stormed back with four runs in the fourth inning.  Center fielder Pop Corkhill and Bob Caruthers, making a start in left field, each delivered home a run, and shortstop Germany Smith followed with a two-run home run.  The Colts then mustered an unearned run in the fifth.  But the Bridegrooms again answered with three more runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by an Oyster Burns triple and Pop Corkhill's second run batted in.  Right-hander Adonis Terry allowed seven hits and five walks with three strikeouts for the win.  The Bridegrooms look to salvage a series split with the Colts tomorrow before departing to Cincinnati for their upcoming showdown against the first-place Reds.

Bridegrooms Pound Amos Rusie Offerings

On a dank afternoon before 551 spectators at Washington Park, the Bridegrooms doubled up the Giants.  Center fielder Darby O'Brien accounted for three of Brooklyn's twelve hits against New York Giants starter Amos Rusie who was removed after the sixth upon yielding twelve runs and walking a ponderous eleven batters.  Bridegroom third baseman George Pinkney and shortstop Germany Smith were issued bases on balls four times each.  Starter Tom Lovett aided his cause with two hits and a run scored.  From the box, Lovett allowed six runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts for the win.  This marked the seventh game this season in which the Bridegrooms posted double-digit runs.
