In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Mickey Welch Hurls a Gem, Shuts Out Bridegrooms at Polo Grounds

Jim Mutrie's Giants brought Brooklyn's nine-game consecutive win streak to an abrupt halt at the Polo Grounds.  The absence of Brooklyn right fielder Oyster Burns was an evident shortcoming in Brooklyn's lineup.  Meanwhile, New York's wily veteran demonstrated there is still much life and many wins in that right arm.  Brooklyn native Mickey Welch hurled a gem against his hometown aggregation, limiting the Bridegrooms to three hits and six walks with four strikeouts over nine scoreless innings for the shutout victory.  Facing Adonis Terry, the two pitchers dueled through five scoreless frames.  Catcher 

Artie Clarke crossed the plate in the sixth with the Giants' first run.  Center fielder Mike Tiernan singled home two more in the seventh, giving the Giants a 3-0 lead and their final margin of victory.  First baseman Dave Foutz accounted for two of Brooklyn's three hits, and Bob Caruthers wielded the other.

On Sunday, May 27, 1934, less than two miles from where I presently live, the local Bay Ridge semipro club defeats the Brooklyn Royal Giants in both games of a doubleheader played at the Ridger's stadium, Brooklyn.  This is the first time in a decade the Royal Giants have been held scoreless in both games of a twin bill.

GAME ONE: Bay Ridge starter Artie Clark limits the Royal Giants to just five hits, two for extra bases, one walk, with five strikeouts in a complete-game shutout performance.  Giants third baseman Jefferies and left fielder Ralph Burgin account for two hits apiece.  Playing right field is Buck Leonard's brother, Charlie Leonard.  I'm speculating former Cuban Stars infielder Pedro San was playing second base for the Royal Giants (not Dick Seay).  I'm likewise speculating that left-hander Otis Starks is the Royal Giants pitcher of record.  Otherwise, Mr. Starke yields four runs on ten hits and three walks with two strikeouts for the loss.  O'Donnell, Marsini, McCarthy, and Kearney all score for Bay Ridge.

GAME TWO: The Royal Giants lose by an identical score, 4 to 0.  Pedro San accounts for two of the Giants five hits.  Charlie Leonard, Ralph Burgin, and the Royal Giants feature starting pitcher account for the other three.  However, the now 44-year old right-hander Cannonball Dick Redding yields 14 hits and strikes out just one.  Starting for Bay Ridge, Spiro strikes out five in a shutout effort.
