The Bridegrooms and Colonels finally played their first eastern championship game before 1,042 loyal fans in cold weather and wet field conditions at Washington Park.  It was only the fifth game in eight attempts in this series.  Brooklyn played minus Darby O'Brien's and George Pinkney's services; however, Bob Caruthers returned to action.  The Bridegrooms scored two runs in the first, highlighted by an Oyster Burns home run.  Each team scored once in the second, and starter Tom Lovett took care of the rest.  He limited Louisville to one other run in the fifth on five total hits and one walk for the win.  Brooklyn added pairs of runs in the fourth and seventh innings for a 7-2 margin of victory.  They also played flawless defense while the Colonels committed six errors, resulting in four unearned runs.  Catcher Tom Daly went 2 for 4 with a double, and Dave Foutz wielded a triple.  The Bridegrooms now lead the series with three victories, one loss, and one tie.  Before the game, both teams joined to finally raise Brooklyn's National League pennant up the flagstaff.

Bridegrooms Head West With National league Pennant in Sight

The Bridegrooms arrived in Boston for a one-game showdown against the second-place Beaneaters before heading west to conclude the season.  Brooklyn's hosts achieved more errors than hits on slippery grass and a muddied infield but didn't seem to compromise the Bridegrooms much.  They promptly pounded the offerings of Pretzels Getzien to all parts of the field, gaining an 8-1 advantage after two and a 10-2 lead by the third.  Whereas starter Tom Lovett limited the Beaneaters to four runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts for his 27th victory this season.  First baseman Dave Foutz and Oyster Burns led Brooklyn's 13-hit attack with three apiece, and Foutz and Darby O'Brien scored six of the Bridegrooms' twelve runs.  Byrne's sluggers will now travel to Chicago with a 5.5 circuit lead and fewer than ten games left to play.

Bridegrooms Send National League Very Clear Message

The National League's top contenders took the field for a single-game showdown at Washington Park.  In a makeup game from May 1, center fielder Darby O'Brien led an 18-hit attack against Boston's best.  Already leading 7-2 through the fifth, the Grooms erupted for another six runs in the sixth inning to knock starter John Clarkson out of the box.  Every Bridegroom wielded at least one hit.  O'Brien led the charge with five, including two doubles, and Dave Foutz doubled, tripled, and drove in a run.  Second baseman Hub Collins homered and plated three runs, and third sacker George Pinkney also homered.  Starter Tom Lovett helped himself with a double and two runs batted in.  He otherwise held the Beaneaters to four runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts for his 26th victory this season.  The win was Brooklyn's eighth in a row - their third such streak this season - and marks their largest lead in the standings to date, a 6.5 game margin over the second-place Beaneaters with less than twenty games left to play.  Boston now heads to Philadelphia while Brooklyn will welcome Jim Mutrie's New York Giants.

Pittsburgh Alleghenys vs. BROOKLYN BRIDEGROOMS

Bridegrooms Extend First-Place Lead Over Boston Beaneaters

Upwards of 7,100 fans packed Washington Park for three games against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, easily the circuit's weakest aggregation, arriving in Brooklyn with an unsightly 19-89 (.176) season record.  Only the Cleveland Spiders have scored fewer runs to date than Pittsburgh, whereas the Bridegrooms have tallied the league most.  

GAME #108 - Monday's first game was underway by 10:30 am.  Byrne's sluggers got to work immediately, tallying early, often, and late.  After scoring four runs in the opening frame, the Bridegrooms had amassed a 10-0 lead through the seventh.  Starter Bob Caruthers served the Alleghenys goose eggs over the first eight innings.  In the ninth, Pittsburgh nearly eliminated their deficit with nine runs but ultimately was held one run short.

GAME #109 - Game two was a tightly contested affair.  Brooklyn right-hander Tom Lovett was opposed on the mound by little-experienced Dave Anderson for Pittsburgh.  The Bridegrooms opened with a run in the first, and Pittsburgh tied things up in the third.  Brooklyn then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.  Lovett held the Alleghenys scoreless through the subsequent five frames before ceding one last run in the ninth for his 25th victory this season.  Third baseman George Pinkney singled, tripled, and scored twice.

GAME #110 - Brooklyn jumped out to a 7-0 lead by the second inning, from which the Alleghenys could not recover.  After three scoreless at-bats, Pittsburgh mustered a run in the fourth and three in the sixth.  Afterwhich, starter Adonis Terry held the Alleghenys scoreless over the final three frames for the win, his 19th this season.  Center fielder Darby O'Brien and Dave Foutz wielded two hits each, and Oyster Burns homered.  In Boston, the Chicago Colts swept two games from the Beaneaters at South End Grounds giving the Bridegrooms a 5.5 game cushion in the standings.

Bridegroom Bats Overcome Sloppy Effort in Field

In a fielding effort seemingly bereft of competence, the Bridegrooms committed six errors, contributing to five of six Cleveland runs being unearned.  After taking a 5-2 lead after two, only to trail the Spiders 6-5 after the fourth, Byrne's sluggers righted the ship with a five-run outburst in the fifth.  Several stellar catches by center fielder Darby O'Brien saved the City of Churches from further ruin.  At the plate, the Bridegrooms tallied ten runs on ten hits initially against Cleveland starter Ed Beatin who was knocked out of the box after the first inning, then rookie Cy Young who likewise suffered poor support in the field.  Getting a break from catching duty and making a start at first base, Tom Daly led Brooklyn with two hits and three runs batted in.  Darby O'Brien knocked home two runs, and starting in right field, Dave Foutz drove in one.  Starter Adonis Terry helped with two hits at the plate and held the Spiders scoreless over the final five frames.  He allowed one earned run on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts for his 18th win this season.

Tom Lovett Earns 23rd Win

Right-hander Tom Lovett put forth yet another fine pitching effort when the Bridegrooms needed it most.  Coming off a series loss against the Reds and having their first-place standing reduced to one, Lovett limited the visiting Cleveland Spiders to just four hits and three walks.  After yielding two runs in the second, Lovett held Cleveland scoreless with two hits over the final seven frames for his 23rd win this season.  The Spiders held a 2-1 lead through the fourth.  But three Cleveland errors in the fifth resulted in four runs for Brooklyn.  The Bridegrooms then closed out the scoring with a run in the eighth.  Center fielder Darby O'Brien delivered home three of Brooklyn's six runs.  Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds shut out the Beaneaters at Boston.

Slugging Bridegrooms Pound Phillies

Byrne's sluggers provided Philadelphia no quarter.  The Bridegrooms jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a run in the first and five runs in the second.  When Brooklyn posted another six runs in the home half of the fifth, manager McGunnigle made starter Adonis Terry and first baseman Dave Foutz switch positions.  Terry allowed no runs through five, and Foutz yielded a pair in the eighth inning but together limited the Phillies to six hits and no bases on balls.  Brooklyn tallied one last time in the seventh.  Third baseman George Pinkney led the batting order with four hits, while Darby O'Brien and Oyster Burns wielded three each.  Phillies catcher Jack Clements was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning upon sustaining a Darby O'Brien spike to his shin on a play at home.

Bridegrooms Complete Sweep; Extend National League Lead to Three

A crowd of 3,335 fanatics watched as their men of Gowanus completed a two-game sweep of the Phillies at Washington Park.  The Bridegrooms were off and running with two runs in the first and five in the third.  Adonis Terry again climbed the mound for game two.  In the top of the fourth, the Phillies mounted a five-run rally to pull within one.  But Terry would settle down, yielding just one more run on eleven total hits and three walks with six strikeouts for his 17th victory.  The hit parade continued at the plate with Adonis Terry and Dave Foutz each wielding a double and triple, and second baseman Hub Collins also doubled among his three hits.  Brooklyn tallied again in the home fourth, struck three more in the fifth, and added one last run in the eighth for a 12-7 margin of victory.  Two losses sent the Phillies into fourth place, six games behind Brooklyn, who took the series three games to one.

Bridegrooms Defeat Phillies in O'Brien's Return

The Bridegroom's lineup is back intact.  A Washington Park crowd of 1,082 cheered the return of Darby O'Brien to his rightful place in center field.  The days of Manager McGunnigle extending Tom Daly, 

Dave Foutz, Bob Caruthers, and Adonis Terry, beyond their normal parameters, are now done, and the National League had better beware.  With everyone back in place, Brooklyn immediately pounded the offerings of Philadelphia starter Tom Vickery for three runs in the first and another trio of runs in the second.  They tacked on another in the third and tallied one last time in the seventh.  Right fielder Oyster Burns, Daly, and Foutz each drove in two runs, and George Pinkney delivered one.  Burns led all batters with three hits, including a double, and leadoff man Hub Collins wielded two hits and three times crossed home plate.  Back in the box, Adonis Terry held the Phillies scoreless through the first six innings, then yielded two in the seventh and one in the ninth on six total hits and just one walk for his fifteenth win this season.  With the loss, Philadelphia falls four games behind Brooklyn in the standings.

Bridegrooms Win Fifth Straight

The Bridegrooms marked Cleveland's arrival in Brooklyn with a victory in Monday's series opener.  Two-time forty game winner Bob Caruthers held the Spiders to a pair of runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts for the win.  Facing Cleveland southpaw Ed Beatin, catcher Tom Daly singled and scored in the third.  But the Spiders, after being held scoreless through the fourth, tied the game in the fifth and took a one run lead in the sixth.  Still filling in for Darby O'Brien in left field, Adonis Terry's double in the sixth tied the game at two.  Caruthers singled in the seventh and went to third on Hub Collins's base hit.  An errant throw on the play allowed Caruthers to score and George Pinkney then delivered home Collins giving the Bridegrooms a 4-2 final margin of victory.  With the return of Darby O'Brien not expected for another five to six weeks, Mr. Byrnes signed outfielder Patsy Donovan who was released by the Boston Beaneaters.

Bridegrooms Rout Alleghenys in Return to Washington Park

The Bridegrooms were back on their own grounds, and starter Tom Lovett appeared back in form.  His mates promptly staked him to a three-run lead in the first inning, then added two in the fifth and another in the sixth for a six-run lead.  Much to the merriment of the over 2,000 fans present at Washington Park, the Bridegrooms erupted for eight more runs in the eighth inning.  Meanwhile, Tom Lovett held the Alleghenys scoreless after the first inning over the subsequent seven frames.  Pittsburgh mustered three inconsequential runs in the ninth, but it was too little too late to save them from a third straight defeat at the hands of the Bridegrooms.  Lovett allowed six hits and one walks with five strikeouts for the win.  The hot-hitting George Pinkney and Adonis Terry wielded two hits and scored twice.  Brooklyn continues playing minus the services of Pop Corkhill and Darby O'Brien in the meantime.

Bridegrooms Win Fourth Consecutive Game Against Pittsburgh; Climb Back Into Second Place

With the crowd now swelled to upwards of 4,000 by game two, the Bridegrooms countered Pittsburgh's opening tally with two in the home first, one in the second, a pair in the third, and three more runs in the fourth.  After a quiet fifth, the teams exchanged a pair of runs in the sixth, giving the Bridegrooms a seemingly insurmountable 10-3 advantage.  But as baseball will do, Brooklyn found themselves on the receiving end.  The Alleghenys not only stormed back to tie the game but seized a one-run lead with eight runs.  Alas, their lead was brief.  The Bridegrooms tallied in the home eighth, tying the game at eleven.  Starter Adonis Terry retired Pittsburgh in the visitor's ninth.  His mates pushed across the winning run in the home half to complete the twin bill sweep.  Regular first baseman Dave Foutz 

continued patrolling center field to adjust for injuries and finished with two hits and four runs scored.  With the victory, the Bridegrooms complete a four-game sweep against the Alleghenys - two games at Pittsburgh and two at Washington Park.

Bridegrooms Trail Series; Fall Five Games Back in Standings

For a second consecutive game, Brooklyn batters were fit to be tied.  First baseman Dave Foutz singled home the game's opening run in the first.  But unbeknownst to the visitors, they would remain scoreless over the final eight frames.  Only George Pinkney could solve Red starter Frank Foreman's offerings as the Bridegroom third baseman accounted for three of Brooklyn's seven hits.  In a losing effort, the veteran Adonis Terry allowed six runs on eight hits and struck out three.  Meanwhile, outfielder Darby O'Brien remains out of action for Brooklyn, and thus this much-anticipated showdown against the Reds is not going as well as Manager McGunnigle had hoped.  With the loss, his men match a season-high five-game deficit out of first place.

Bridegrooms Extend Win Streak to Seven

With Thursday's 8-6 victory at Washington Park, the Bridegrooms swept the Phillies and won their season-high seventh consecutive game.  However, things started ominously for the Bridegrooms.  The Phillies wielded ten hits and knocked starter Adonis Terry from the box while jumping to a 5-3 lead after two innings.  Right-hander Tom Lovett entered in relief and surrendered just one run in the fourth inning.  Brooklyn scored in the bottom of the frame, making the game a 6-4 affair in favor of the visitors.  But their advantage did not last.  Third baseman George Pinkney tripled home three runs in the six and scored on Darby O'Brien's sacrifice fly, and Lovett took care of the rest.  Pinkney finished with a game-high three hits and scored twice.  Brooklyn again failed to gain ground as the Cincinnati Reds won their thirteenth straight contest.

Late Rally Clinches Victory Over Phillies

Facing Philadelphia's Kid Gleason, the Bridegrooms opened with a run in the first and added a pair in the third.  The Phillies treated Tom Lovett in kind with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth.  After a scoreless sixth, the Phillies took their first lead with a run in the seventh.  But it did not last.  In the bottom of the frame, Hub Collins singled, stole second, and scored on George Pinkney's double.  Brooklyn added two more runs on hits by Darby O'Brien, Oyster Burns, and Pop Corkhill for a 6-4 lead and the final margin of victory.  This extends the Bridegroom's consecutive win streak to five games, tying a season-high.
