The Bridegrooms and Colonels finally played their first eastern championship game before 1,042 loyal fans in cold weather and wet field conditions at Washington Park.  It was only the fifth game in eight attempts in this series.  Brooklyn played minus Darby O'Brien's and George Pinkney's services; however, Bob Caruthers returned to action.  The Bridegrooms scored two runs in the first, highlighted by an Oyster Burns home run.  Each team scored once in the second, and starter Tom Lovett took care of the rest.  He limited Louisville to one other run in the fifth on five total hits and one walk for the win.  Brooklyn added pairs of runs in the fourth and seventh innings for a 7-2 margin of victory.  They also played flawless defense while the Colonels committed six errors, resulting in four unearned runs.  Catcher Tom Daly went 2 for 4 with a double, and Dave Foutz wielded a triple.  The Bridegrooms now lead the series with three victories, one loss, and one tie.  Before the game, both teams joined to finally raise Brooklyn's National League pennant up the flagstaff.

Louisville staved off defeat with three runs in their final at-bat, but they have still yet to win a game in the World's Championship against Brooklyn.  The third contest at Eclipse Park ended in a seven-all tie, called after the eighth inning because of darkness.  As such, interest appears to be waning as well, and attendance figures bear that out.  After a strong turnout in game one, that number dropped by half for game two, and only half of that was in attendance on Monday.  Facing Louisville right-hander and Brooklyn native George Meakim, the Grooms opened the scoring in the second and staked starter 

Adonis Terry to a 6-2 lead through the fifth.  But Louisville scored five times to the Bridegroom's one over the final three frames to force a stalemate while totaling eleven hits against Terry, with six going for extra bases.  However, following their defensive mishaps in game two, the Association's nine again compromised their own efforts; this time, poor base running was to blame.  The story might otherwise be about a much-needed Louisville victory.  Bridegroom right-hander Bob Caruthers is heading home, leaving the team with two pitchers, and both catchers, Bob Clark and Tom Daly, are dealing with minor injuries and soreness, respectively.

Champions Arrive at Washington Park

Over one thousand rooters gathered at Washington Park to welcome their National League champions and were given the heartiest reception when they appeared on the field.  In return, the home team scored early and often against Pittsburgh, rallying for two runs in the first, two in the second, and three in the third.  Starting pitcher Adonis Terry helped with three of Brooklyn's ten hits at the plate.  Otherwise, he allowed seven hits and an unearned run in the fifth before exiting after the sixth.  Manager McGunnigle summoned Dave Foutz, who hurled three scoreless innings while allowing the Alleghenys only one hit.  With Tom Daly shifted to first base, Bob Clark filled in behind the plate and wielded three hits.  The team's top slugger Oyster Burns did not play due to an injured finger sustained on the train ride home.  Thursday's defeat marks Pittsburgh's 112th loss this season, the most ever by any team.  Friday's upcoming game is the last of the 1890 regular season and Byrne's Bridegrooms' first as a National League member club.

Phillies Topple Tom Lovett in Ninth Inning

Embarking on a season-ending road trip, Byrne's Bridegrooms were met with defeat upon their arrival in Philadelphia.  Recall how the Phillies spent over fifty days earlier this season perched atop the National League standings.  On Monday, they served Brooklyn, presently in first place, a City of Brotherly Love reminder that nothing is certain.  Right-hander Tom Lovett toed the slab for Brooklyn, opposed by the gamely Tom Vickery twirling for the hosts.  In the second inning, Phillie shortstop Bob Allen converted a sensational grab of a line hit into a 6-4-3 rally-killing triple play with Adonis Terry and Tom Daly getting caught too far off base, respectively.  After two scoreless frames, Hub Collins reached on a bunt and scored in the third, but Philadelphia promptly tied the game at one.  The score remained unchanged through the fifth.  Then in the sixth, Oyster Burns and Daly each drove in a run giving the Grooms a 3-1 lead.  Tom Lovett kept the Phillies at bay through the eighth but buckled in the final frame, allowing three runs and enduring a gut-wrenching loss.  At the Polo grounds, the Giants and Beaneaters battled to a 6-6- draw as the game was called after eleven innings due to darkness.

Bridegroom Bats Overcome Sloppy Effort in Field

In a fielding effort seemingly bereft of competence, the Bridegrooms committed six errors, contributing to five of six Cleveland runs being unearned.  After taking a 5-2 lead after two, only to trail the Spiders 6-5 after the fourth, Byrne's sluggers righted the ship with a five-run outburst in the fifth.  Several stellar catches by center fielder Darby O'Brien saved the City of Churches from further ruin.  At the plate, the Bridegrooms tallied ten runs on ten hits initially against Cleveland starter Ed Beatin who was knocked out of the box after the first inning, then rookie Cy Young who likewise suffered poor support in the field.  Getting a break from catching duty and making a start at first base, Tom Daly led Brooklyn with two hits and three runs batted in.  Darby O'Brien knocked home two runs, and starting in right field, Dave Foutz drove in one.  Starter Adonis Terry helped with two hits at the plate and held the Spiders scoreless over the final five frames.  He allowed one earned run on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts for his 18th win this season.

Lovett Hurls Four-Hit Shutout

The Bridegrooms avenged Monday's loss by shutting out the Reds.  Cincinnati right-hander Billy Rhines and Tom Lovett traded goose eggs through the fifth inning.  Brooklyn finally snapped the scoreless tie on Dave Foutz's two-run single in the sixth.  Lovett helped his cause in the home seventh with a hit and run batted in, giving Brooklyn a 3-0 lead.  That's all they would need.  Tom Lovett was on his mark, limiting the Reds to four scattered hits and two walks with three strikeouts over nine scoreless innings for the shutout victory, his 22nd this season.  Third baseman George Pinkney and catcher Tom Daly wielded two hits apiece.  However, the Bridegrooms failed to extend their standing as the Boston Beaneaters again defeated the Pittsburgh Alleghenys at South End Grounds.

Bridegrooms Defeat Phillies in O'Brien's Return

The Bridegroom's lineup is back intact.  A Washington Park crowd of 1,082 cheered the return of Darby O'Brien to his rightful place in center field.  The days of Manager McGunnigle extending Tom Daly, 

Dave Foutz, Bob Caruthers, and Adonis Terry, beyond their normal parameters, are now done, and the National League had better beware.  With everyone back in place, Brooklyn immediately pounded the offerings of Philadelphia starter Tom Vickery for three runs in the first and another trio of runs in the second.  They tacked on another in the third and tallied one last time in the seventh.  Right fielder Oyster Burns, Daly, and Foutz each drove in two runs, and George Pinkney delivered one.  Burns led all batters with three hits, including a double, and leadoff man Hub Collins wielded two hits and three times crossed home plate.  Back in the box, Adonis Terry held the Phillies scoreless through the first six innings, then yielded two in the seventh and one in the ninth on six total hits and just one walk for his fifteenth win this season.  With the loss, Philadelphia falls four games behind Brooklyn in the standings.

Bridegrooms Bow in Ninth Inning at South End Grounds

In another hotly contested affair, the Beaneaters brought an uproarious home crowd of 3,690 to its feet in the game's final frame.  Facing last season's 49-game winner John Clarkson, the Bridegrooms were held scoreless through the first six frames.  Brooklyn left the bases loaded in the fourth and, with one out in the fifth, left a runner stranded on third, and George Pinkney's leadoff double in the sixth likewise went for naught.  Two fielding errors directly contributed to both Boston runs.  Brooklyn tied the game on Tom Daly's home run to straightaway center field in the seventh.  The game was decided in the bottom of the ninth on a safe call at home plate when catcher Bob Clark failed to secure Tom Daly's throw from first.

Adonis Terry Hurls Gem at Polo Grounds

The Bridegrooms visited the Polo Grounds for their fourth series showdown this season against the Giants.  Facing rookie New York star Amos Rusie for the seventh time, Brooklyn opened the scoring in the second.  First baseman Dave Foutz knocked home a run, and Tom Daly scored on a wild pitch.  Unable to solve Adonis Terry's offerings, the score remained unchanged until the sixth.  However, it was Brooklyn who added to their ledger.  Terry helped his cause with a double that sent home George Pinkney.  Foutz then scored on a sac-fly to left field, and a base hit from Germany Smith delivered Terry, giving Brooklyn a 5-0 lead and the final margin of victory.  Perhaps his finest outing to date, Adonis Terry yielded just five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts for the shutout victory, his twelfth win this season.  Shortstop Jack Glasscock accounted for two of New York's hits.  Foutz and Daly wielded two hits each.  The contest sounded as if half of the 2,059 cranks present at the Polo Grounds hailed from the City of Churches.

Bridegrooms Win Fifth Consecutive Game; Reclaim Share of First Place

Byrne's sluggers are back on top of the standings.  With Saturday's victory, the Bridegrooms took their third straight from the Alleghenys and notched their fifth consecutive win.  It's their fourth such streak this season.  Starter Adonis Terry was on his mark, limiting Pittsburgh to a pair of runs on five hits and three walks to even his record at ten wins and ten losses.  Right fielder Oyster Burns delivered home two runs in the first inning.  The teams traded runs in the fourth; Terry singled and scored for Brooklyn.  After a scoreless fifth and sixth, the Bridegrooms bunched four hits in the seventh, resulting in four runs.  Catcher Tom Daly and Bob Caruthers knocked home two runs each, and in the eighth, Oyster Burns brought the crowd of 1,723 to its feet with a two-run home run giving the Bridegrooms a 9-2 final margin of victory and share of first place in the National League.  The Bridegrooms and Phillies, defeated by Cincinnati, end the day with identical records.

Bridegrooms Rout Alleghenys

The Bridegrooms were back to their slugging ways, wielding 19 hits for 26 totals bases.  They opened with four runs in the first innings and by the fourth, led by a nine-run margin.  When Pittsburgh scored in the fifth, the Bridegrooms answered with another five runs.  The Alleghenys mustered five runs in the later innings.  But Brooklyn tacked on two more in the seventh to finalize their 17-7 triumph over the Alleghenys.  Starter Tom Lovett yielded eight hits and five walks, recording his sixteenth win this season.  Third baseman George Pinkney, Adonis Terry, and Tom Daly wielded three hits each.  However, all Brooklyn's heavy hitting failed to alter the standings as the Phillies defeated the Colts at Philadelphia.

Look Who's Number One!

Bridegrooms Win Second Straight Against Cincinnati, Take Over First Place; Extend Win Streak to Nine Games

Batting against familiar foe Cyclone Jim Duryea, second baseman Hub Collins brought the crowd of 2,663 to its feet with a first-inning home run.  The Bridegrooms added pairs of runs in the third and fourth innings and another in the fifth.  By this time, victory seemed a surety.  Cincinnati finally caught up with Tom Lovett's offerings with two runs in the sixth.  They loaded the bases again in the seventh, but Lovett escaped unscathed and then retired the Reds in order in the eighth and ninth innings.  Not yet done, Brooklyn added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for a 9-2 final margin of victory.  The triumph marks the Bridegroom's season-high ninth consecutive win and gives them sole possession of first place.  Catcher Tom Daly, George Pinkney, and Oyster Burns delivered home two runs each.  Lovett allowed one earned run on five hits and five walks with six strikeouts for the win.

The Bridegrooms marked Cleveland's arrival in Brooklyn with a victory in Monday's series opener.  Two-time forty game winner Bob Caruthers held the Spiders to a pair of runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts for the win.  Facing Cleveland southpaw Ed Beatin, catcher Tom Daly singled and scored in the third.  But the Spiders, after being held scoreless through the fourth, tied the game in the fifth and took a one run lead in the sixth.  Still filling in for Darby O'Brien in left field, Adonis Terry's double in the sixth tied the game at two.  Caruthers singled in the seventh and went to third on Hub Collins's base hit.  An errant throw on the play allowed Caruthers to score and George Pinkney then delivered home Collins giving the Bridegrooms a 4-2 final margin of victory.  With the return of Darby O'Brien not expected for another five to six weeks, Mr. Byrnes signed outfielder Patsy Donovan who was released by the Boston Beaneaters.

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Bridegrooms Close In On Cincinnati

The Bridegrooms arrived at League Park seeking to alter their four-game standing behind the first-place Reds.  Facing right-hander Frank Foreman, Brooklyn tallied twice in the third and added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.  However, Brooklyn starter Adonis Terry gave it all back in the bottom half of the fifth.  But the stalemate did not last long.  Hits by Tom Daly, Hub Collins, and George Pinkney 

helped generate two more runs in the sixth.  Not yet done, triples by Collins and Pinkney in the eighth produced two more runs as the Bridegrooms went on to post an 8-6 victory in the series opener against their old American Association foes.

Bridegrooms Lose Second Game to Spiders

The Spiders took their second straight from the Bridegrooms.  Cleveland's rookie right-hander Jack Wadsworth allowed a run in the second, then held Brooklyn scoreless through the seventh until yielding another run in the eighth.  Wadsworth allowed nine scattered hits and two walks with three strikeouts for the win.  Continuing to fill in for the injured Pop Corkhill, left fielder Adonis Terry dropped a fly ball that led to a pair of Cleveland runs in the home second.  The Spiders scored again in the seventh and ninth innings to secure a 4-2 victory.  Catcher Tom Daly drove home Brooklyn's second run in the eighth.  Right-hander Bob Caruthers yielded four runs on nine hits and one walk in a losing effort.
