In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Amos Rusie Outlasts Adonis Terry; Giants Take Series

Upwards of 4,400 fans were present for Brooklyn's regular-season finale at Washington Park.  With 

Amos Rusie tossing for the Giants and Adonis Terry going for the Bridegrooms, the teams battled to a one-all tie through the eighth.  New York first baseman Lew Whistler doubled and scored in the first, and after seven scoreless innings for Brooklyn, Oyster Burns singled home the tying run in the eighth.  Much to the home crowd's dismay, New York tallied four runs against Terry in the ninth.  Afterwhich, Amos Rusie retired the Bridegrooms in order in their half of the frame for the win.  Brooklyn must now defend a five-game circuit lead on the road.  They will first make stops in Philadelphia, the Polo Grounds, and Boston before heading west to compete against the Colts, Reds, Spiders, and the Alleghenys.

Jim Mutrie's Youngsters Get Better of Byrne's Sluggers

In front of 1,234 fans at Washington Park, New York Giant rookie and native Staten Islander Jack Sharrott brought Brooklyn's streak of (nine) successive victories to an abrupt halt.  The right-hander limited the Bridegrooms to one run on four hits for the win.  New York opened with an unearned run in the first and a throwing error by starting pitcher Tom Lovett in the second inning cleared the way for another six unearned runs.  The Giants took an 8-1 lead in the sixth, which was it for Lovett, who surrendered eight hits and walked three.  Mutrie's men scored one last time against Bob Caruthers in the ninth.  Rookie first baseman Lew Whistler homered among his two hits and drove in a pair.  Second baseman Charley Bassett and left fielder Joe Hornung each tripled.  Bridegroom left fielder Adonis Terry singled home Brooklyn's only run.
