OTD Brooklyn Semipros 8/23/1935: Bushwicks Defeat Bay Parkways in Extra Innings at Dexter Park

On Friday, August 23, 1935, in another diamond tussle featuring brother versus brother, Max Rosner's Bushwick nine outduels Joe Rosner's Bay Parkway Dukes at Dexter Park.  With the victory, Bushwick takes a 3-2 lead in the season series.

Rube Chambers is called upon to make a last-minute start for Bushwick as Jim Duffy arrives at Dexter Park an inning late.  Bay Parkway takes full advantage by pushing across the game's opening run.  Otherwise, Duffy takes over slab duties in the second and is opposed by local Long Island University product Al Morris for the Dukes in a familiar match-up.

Once settled in, Jim Duffy proceeds to toss seven scoreless innings.  Meanwhile, Bushwick takes a slim lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.  But the Dukes pick up Al Morris with the game-tying run in the visitor's ninth.

With one out and runners on the corners in the home tenth, right fielder Sol Mishkin's hit delivers home center fielder Al Moore (triple) with the game-winning run.

Despite 13 strikeouts and largely undone by misplays in the field, Al Morris allows three runs on 13 hits and three walks for the loss.  Jim Duffy allows one late run on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts for the win.

Bay Parkway starter Jim Duffy allows three runs on just three hits and three walks with six strikeouts in a somewhat ponderous loss against Bushwick.  A tightly contested affair to be sure, the Dukes outhit Bushwick, 7 to 3, but the Dexters do a better job of bunching theirs together, depending on your point of view.

Leading off the Bushwick first, third baseman Buck Lai safely bunts his way to first, then advances when Jim Duffy fields Overton Tremper's comebacker but throws errantly to second.  Right fielder Joe Rabbitt then lays another bunt down the third base line, but another errant throw, this time by Duke third baseman Tarr allows Lai to score.  Overton Tremper then scores on second baseman Jimmy Calleran's fielder's choice.

With two outs in the home fourth, and runners on the corners, Bushwick executes a successful double-steal when Ed Boland takes off for second, and Jimmy Calleran scampers home giving the Dexters a 3-0 lead.

The score remains unchanged through the ninth.

Bushwick starter Art Smith allows seven hits (one for extra bases) and no walks with six strikeouts in a complete-game shutout victory.  Catcher Paddy Smith was thrown out by home plate umpire Golden for excessive arguing.  Charlie Hargreaves entered the game in Smith's place.

OTD Brooklyn Semipro Rivalry 8/3/1934: With Late Rally Bay Parkway Seizes Victory Over Bushwick at Dexter Park

On Friday, August 3, 1934, in their fourth clash this season, Joe Rosner's Bay Parkway Dukes defeated brother Max Rosner's Bushwicks at Dexter Park.

Behind the strong pitching of Hank Grampp, the Bushwicks appear headed towards a certain victory.  After four scoreless innings, the Dexters plate two runs in the fifth on runs scored by recently signed catcher Charlie Hargreaves (former Brooklyn Dodger) and first baseman Eppie Barnes.  Staked to a 2-0 lead, Grampp continues hurling scoreless baseball through the seventh.

Bay Parkway finally solves Grampp's puzzling efforts with a five-run outburst in the eighth.  After singles by first baseman Gene Rogers and right fielder Bruce Caldwell, pinch-hitter Ike Gould doubles, and Dressen the second baseman singles for three runs, knocking Hank Grampp out of the box.  Facing Art Smith in relief of Grampp, the Dukes score twice more on a walk, a hit by Jim Duffy, and a perfectly executed squeeze-play for a 5-2 lead.

Bushwick picks up an unearned run in the home ninth.  Right fielder Eddie Boland triples and scores on one of three Bay Parkway errors.  Otherwise, Duke's starter Jim "Dizzy" Duffy allows three runs on eight hits (only one for extra bases) and two walks with four strikeouts in a resilient winning effort.

Despite an initial seven exemplary innings pitched, Hank Grampp winds up yielding nine of Bay Parkway's ten hits in a late-inning, albeit a hard-luck loss.  

Bruce Caldwell, in particular, leads the Dukes with a 3 for 5 performance at the plate, and Dizzy Duffy helps his own cause with a double then a single in that big eighth inning. 

Bushwick's second baseman Buck Lai and Grumpp each register a hit and a run batted in. 

The Bay Parkway Dukes now lead the season series against Bushwick, three games to one.

OTD 6/23/1935: Bushwick Splits Games of Twin Bill With Homestead Grays at Dexter Park

On Sunday, June 23, 1935, Max Rosner's Bushwick nine split games of a doubleheader with Cum Posey's Homestead Grays at Dexter Park.

GAME ONE - Facing Homestead Grays right-hander Ray Brown, Bushwick musters seven runs on 13 hits and two walks.  The Grays open the scoring in the first, but Bushwick scores twice in the second, highlighted by right fielder Solly Mishkin's home run, and would never trail again.  Four more runs cross the plate in the sixth as Mishkin, second baseman Dutch Woerner, third baseman Jimmy Calleran all hit safely, and catcher Emil Gall smashes a two-run home run.  Mishkin and Woerner lead Bushwick with three hits apiece, and Jimmy Calleran goes 1 for 3 with two runs batted in.  Starter Charley Perkins yields five runs on nine hits and one walk with four strikeouts for the win.  Homestead third baseman  George Scales leads the Grays with three runs batted in.  He, along with center fielder Jerry Benjamin and second baseman Matt Carlisle wield two hits apiece.  However, first baseman Buck Leonard is held hitless in three at-bats.

GAME TWO - Grays starter Joe Strong limits Bushwick to just one run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts for the win.  Native Brooklynite and former big leaguer of 30 games with the New York Giants Al Moore drives home, Emil Gall, with Bushwick's only run in the sixth.  In a losing effort, starter Art Smith yields two runs on eight hits and four walks over six innings pitched.  Jim Duffy allows three runs on four hits over two innings in relief of Smith.  Matt Carlisle goes 4 for 5, giving him six hits in the twin bill.  George Scales and shortstop Jelly Jackson hit for extra bases.  Buck Leonard is again held hitless in four at-bats, making him 0 for 7 for the day.  Jerry Benjamin and catcher Tommy Dukes post multiple hits.

OTD 5/17/1936: Bushwicks Defeat Brooklyn Royal Giants Before 9,000 at Dexter Park

On Sunday, May 17, 1936, in front of 9,000 fans at Dexter Park, the host Bushwicks defeat the  Brooklyn Royal Giants.  Starter Jim Duffy and Charlie Perkins join together in limiting the Royal Giants to a pair of runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts for the victory.  For the Royal Giants, Carter surrenders eight hits over five innings; Farrell walks one and strikes out three in relief.  But the Bushwicks make no distinction with nine total runs on 15 hits.  Only a few of the top Brooklyn Royal Giants' regulars appear in this match, first baseman Ed Rile, center fielder Pete Washington, and catcher Joe Lewis, among them.
