OTD 9/22/1935: Brooklyn Eagles Split Twin Bill With Glendale at Farmer's Oval, Queens

On Sunday, September 22, 1935, the Negro National League  Brooklyn Eagles and Glendale Farmers split games of a doubleheader at Farmer's Oval, Queens.

NEGRO NATIONAL LEAGUE

BROOKLYN EAGLES

Playing before 5,700 fans at Farmer's Oval, the home team takes the opening game from the Eagles.  Brooklyn starter Terris McDuffie is knocked out of the box as the Farmers seize a 6-2 lead through five.  Right-hander Elbert Williams enters the game in relief of McDuffie, and Billy Nicholas tosses a scoreless ninth.  Farmer's first baseman Gene Rogers connects for a three-run home run, and third baseman Roy Tarr also homers for Queens.  Glendale starter Jack LaRocca holds Brooklyn to three runs on nine hits for the win.  Left fielder Fats Jenkins leads the Eagles with three hits, right fielder Ed Stone goes 2 for 4 with a triple, and third baseman Javier Perez accounts for two of Brooklyn's three runs scored.

Right-hander Leon Day holds Glendale to four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in game two as the Eagles draw even with the Farmers for a twin bill split.  Brooklyn punishes Dominick Torpe's offerings to all corners of the yard for 17 hits resulting in six runs.  First baseman George Giles goes 4 for 5 with a triple and stolen base.  Catcher Clarence Palm also triples, and Ed Stone homers for Brooklyn.  The Eagles turn a key double-play in the eighth to help preserve the victory.

On Friday, August 3, 1934, in their fourth clash this season, Joe Rosner's Bay Parkway Dukes defeated brother Max Rosner's Bushwicks at Dexter Park.

Behind the strong pitching of Hank Grampp, the Bushwicks appear headed towards a certain victory.  After four scoreless innings, the Dexters plate two runs in the fifth on runs scored by recently signed catcher Charlie Hargreaves (former Brooklyn Dodger) and first baseman Eppie Barnes.  Staked to a 2-0 lead, Grampp continues hurling scoreless baseball through the seventh.

Bay Parkway finally solves Grampp's puzzling efforts with a five-run outburst in the eighth.  After singles by first baseman Gene Rogers and right fielder Bruce Caldwell, pinch-hitter Ike Gould doubles, and Dressen the second baseman singles for three runs, knocking Hank Grampp out of the box.  Facing Art Smith in relief of Grampp, the Dukes score twice more on a walk, a hit by Jim Duffy, and a perfectly executed squeeze-play for a 5-2 lead.

Bushwick picks up an unearned run in the home ninth.  Right fielder Eddie Boland triples and scores on one of three Bay Parkway errors.  Otherwise, Duke's starter Jim "Dizzy" Duffy allows three runs on eight hits (only one for extra bases) and two walks with four strikeouts in a resilient winning effort.

Despite an initial seven exemplary innings pitched, Hank Grampp winds up yielding nine of Bay Parkway's ten hits in a late-inning, albeit a hard-luck loss.  

Bruce Caldwell, in particular, leads the Dukes with a 3 for 5 performance at the plate, and Dizzy Duffy helps his own cause with a double then a single in that big eighth inning. 

Bushwick's second baseman Buck Lai and Grumpp each register a hit and a run batted in. 

The Bay Parkway Dukes now lead the season series against Bushwick, three games to one.

On Thursday, July 26, 1934, before a capacity crowd, the Bay Parkway Dukes bow to the baseball nine at Stroudsburg, PA.

Staked to a 3-0 lead after four, the Dukes appear on their way towards victory.  

Murphy's Law then decides to intercede.  

Bay Parkway's sure-handed first baseman Gene Rogers collides with Stroudsburg's third baseman, Verzino, in the top of the fifth.  Rogers breaks his glasses and sustains and superficial cuts to his face.  

Manager Joe Press is forced to shift Harry Hesse from center field to first base.  That's when things go awry.  Hesse mishandles a potential double-play ball clearing the way for three runs in the bottom half of the frame.  A second misplay by Hesse leads to yet another run as Stroudsburg goes on to post a 5-3 victory on their home grounds.

Making his debut for the Bay Parkways, collegiate Bill Gannett surrenders five mostly unearned runs on eight hits and five walks with eight strikeouts in a losing effort.

OTD 6/11/1941: Bushwick Defeats Baltimore Elite Giants at Dexter Park

On Wednesday, June 11, 1941, the Bushwicks defeated the Baltimore Elite Giants in a non-Negro National League contest at Dexter Park.  Although he did not play in this game, the Elites feature a 19-year old catcher named Roy Campanella.

Starting for Baltimore, southpaw Jesse Brown is knocked out of the box in the third.  He yields seven hits, walks one, and hits a batter in 2.1 innings pitched.  Right-hander Bill Barnes fares no better, allowing four hits in 3.2 innings pitched.  Together, they surrender five runs on eleven hits, with two strikeouts between them.  Roy K. Williams pitches the final two innings surrendering one hit, one walk, with two strikeouts.  Shortstop Tommy Butts goes 2 for 4 with a double and run scored.  Center fielder Charlie Biot is 1 for 3 with a triple and run batted in.  Second baseman and manager Felton Snow drives home the other Baltimore run.  Bushwick starter Bob Miller limits the Elite Giants to a pair of runs on just six hits, two going for extra bases.  He walks none and strikes out eight in a winning effort.  Bushwick third baseman Al "Chick" Cuccinello and left fielder Jimmy Ashworth each drive in two runs apiece.  Right fielder Sol Mishkin and first baseman Gene Rogers strike for multiple hits.
