OTD Brooklyn Semipros 8/23/1935: Bushwicks Defeat Bay Parkways in Extra Innings at Dexter Park

On Friday, August 23, 1935, in another diamond tussle featuring brother versus brother, Max Rosner's Bushwick nine outduels Joe Rosner's Bay Parkway Dukes at Dexter Park.  With the victory, Bushwick takes a 3-2 lead in the season series.

Rube Chambers is called upon to make a last-minute start for Bushwick as Jim Duffy arrives at Dexter Park an inning late.  Bay Parkway takes full advantage by pushing across the game's opening run.  Otherwise, Duffy takes over slab duties in the second and is opposed by local Long Island University product Al Morris for the Dukes in a familiar match-up.

Once settled in, Jim Duffy proceeds to toss seven scoreless innings.  Meanwhile, Bushwick takes a slim lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.  But the Dukes pick up Al Morris with the game-tying run in the visitor's ninth.

With one out and runners on the corners in the home tenth, right fielder Sol Mishkin's hit delivers home center fielder Al Moore (triple) with the game-winning run.

Despite 13 strikeouts and largely undone by misplays in the field, Al Morris allows three runs on 13 hits and three walks for the loss.  Jim Duffy allows one late run on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts for the win.

On Thursday, July 18, 1935, not more than two miles from where I presently live, Joe Rosner's Bay Parkway Dukes defeat Cum Posey's Negro National League Homestead Grays in the first-ever night game at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M Station along the Culver Line.

BAY PARKWAY DUKES vs. 

HOMESTEAD GRAYS

With a new lighting system in place, George Smith starts for the Bay Parkways and is opposed by Tom "Big Train" Parker for Homestead.  The Grays apparently see the ball well as they jump out to a prompt 2-0 lead in the first.  Bay Parkway answers with runs in the third and fourth innings.  The Homestead Grays then take a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but it does not last again.  The Dukes tie the game in the sixth, then erupt for three runs in the seventh for a 6-3 lead.  The teams again traded two runs apiece in the eighth inning, giving Bay Parkway an 8-5 lead and the final margin of victory, but not before Homestead poses one last threat.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, and first baseman Buck Leonard due up, manager Harry Hesse removes George Smith in favor of Al Morris.  Leonard had previously doubled and homered off Smith.  When play resumes, Al Morris strikes out Buck Leonard on three pitches to end the game.  

George Smith yields five runs on seven hits and five walks with ten strikeouts through 8.2 innings pitched for the win.  Four of Homestead's seven hits go for extra bases; left fielder Vic Harris goes 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored; center fielder Ray Brown triples in four at-bats and pitches in relief of Big Train Parker (striking out four with one walk), while Buck Leonard accounts for six total bases.

Homestead starter Tom Parker allows eight runs on seven hits and seven walks with 13 strikeouts in a losing effort.  The slugging Parkways make their hits count as five go for extra bases.  Right fielder Bruce Caldwell leads the Dukes, going 2 for 4 with a double, home run, and two runs scored, and Frank Posnack is 2 for 5 with two doubles and one run scored.

First Night Game at Erasmus Field, Brooklyn

 

OTD in Brooklyn Semipros 6/30/1935: Bay Parkway and Bay Ridge Clubs Draw 6,200 Local Fans

On Sunday, June 30, 1935, not more than two miles east of where I presently live, the Bay Parkway Dukes split games of a doubleheader with the Cuban Stars in front of 2,500 fans at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.  Meanwhile, two miles north of where I presently live, a reported crowd of 3,700 fans watches Bay Ridge split games of their twin bill against the Stroudsburg club from Pennsylvania at Bay Ridge Oval, 15th Avenue at 86th Street.  The two games combined for 6,200 local fans in attendance.  Starting pitcher Al Morris was the day's top star for Bay Parkway, right fielder Mickey Sefchick for Bay Ridge.

OTD 6/23/1935: Bay Parkway Dukes Split Twin Bill With New York Black Yankees at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, June 23, 1935, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Parkway Dukes split games of a doubleheader with the New York Black Yankees at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - Bay Parkway starter Al Morris limits the Yankees to just one run on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts for the win.  Second baseman Henry Spearman leads the visitors with four hits, including a double in four at-bats.  Catcher Bob Clarke is the only other Yankee with multiple hits.  Left fielder Crush Holloway and shortstop Walter Cannady account for the Yankees' other two hits.  But the New York Black Yankees leave nine men on base.  Starter Barney Brown yields two runs on just four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in a hard-luck loss.  Both teams traded runs in the first inning, Spearman scoring for the Yankees and Goldstein for the Dukes.  The score remains unchanged through the fifth.  However, in the home sixth, Yankees' first baseman Dave Thomas drops a throw from third baseman Bill Riggins allowing Mac Posnack to score the game's decisive run.

GAME TWO - The Dukes twice hold the lead, each time relinquishing it to the Yankees, who finally pull away with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings en route to a tightly contested 6-5 victory and a split of Sunday's twin bill at Erasmus Field.  The Yankees' pitching duties are shared by Connie Rector and  Terris McDuffie joining together to win.  They allow nine hits, with four going for extra bases, including a triple by Dukes' second baseman, Rodrigues.  McDuffie walks one and strikeouts out four, and Rector walks one and hits a batter.  Making up for his game one misplay, first baseman Dave Thomas leads the Yankees with a double, triple, and two runs scored.  Center fielder Thad Christopher also goes 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.
