OTD Brooklyn Semipros 8/30/1935: Former Brooklyn Dodger Hurler Dazzy Vance Makes Bushwick Debut, But Springfield Wins at Dexter Park

On Friday, August 30, 1935, a 42-year old former three-time 20-game winner for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Dazzy Vance makes his Bushwick debut in a contest against the Springfield Greys at Dexter Park.

Right-hander Dazzy Vance faced the minimum six batters over the first two innings for Bushwick, inducing two fly balls, one groundout, and striking out three batters.

After two scoreless innings, Bushwick left fielder Al Moore knocks home two runs in the third inning against Springfield starter Charley Cerny.  But Bushwick would score no more.  Charley Cerney holds the Dexters scoreless over the game's final six frames.  All told, he allows a lone run on six hits and six walks with eight strikeouts for the win.

With Dazzy Vance out of the game, the Greys tally four runs on twelve hits against Rube Chambers, who takes the loss.  Springfield amasses 14 total hits, but only two off Art Smith during his two innings pitched.

OTD Brooklyn Semipros 8/23/1935: Bushwicks Defeat Bay Parkways in Extra Innings at Dexter Park

On Friday, August 23, 1935, in another diamond tussle featuring brother versus brother, Max Rosner's Bushwick nine outduels Joe Rosner's Bay Parkway Dukes at Dexter Park.  With the victory, Bushwick takes a 3-2 lead in the season series.

Rube Chambers is called upon to make a last-minute start for Bushwick as Jim Duffy arrives at Dexter Park an inning late.  Bay Parkway takes full advantage by pushing across the game's opening run.  Otherwise, Duffy takes over slab duties in the second and is opposed by local Long Island University product Al Morris for the Dukes in a familiar match-up.

Once settled in, Jim Duffy proceeds to toss seven scoreless innings.  Meanwhile, Bushwick takes a slim lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.  But the Dukes pick up Al Morris with the game-tying run in the visitor's ninth.

With one out and runners on the corners in the home tenth, right fielder Sol Mishkin's hit delivers home center fielder Al Moore (triple) with the game-winning run.

Despite 13 strikeouts and largely undone by misplays in the field, Al Morris allows three runs on 13 hits and three walks for the loss.  Jim Duffy allows one late run on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts for the win.

BROOKLYN - On Friday, July 9, 1937, within two miles of where I presently live, the Mount Vernon Scarlets defeated the local Bay Ridge nine on their home grounds at 15th Avenue at 86st Street, Brooklyn.  A four-run outburst in the eighth inning seals Mount Vernon's victory.  Bay Ridge starter Simmons yields seven runs on ten hits and three walks with three strikeouts in a losing effort.  For Bay Ridge, their second consecutive loss.

WOODHAVEN - Meanwhile, over at Dexter Park, Bushwick and the Carltons engage in a tightly contested affair.  Center fielder Al Moore crosses the plate in the fourth.  Otherwise, Mount Vernon's young Charles Matuch and Joe "Dutch" Stryker for Bushwick engage in an eight-inning duel.  Facing Stryker in the ninth, pinch hitter Bob Synnott singles to center field, scoring pinch-runner Bill Simmons and catcher Bert Arlington for a 2-1 lead.  The Scarlets' Emil Moskowitz secures the win tossing a scoreless bottom half of the ninth.  This marks only Bushwick's eleventh loss against 24 victories to date.
