Max Rosner's Bushwick club packed their suitcases and traveled to the City of Brotherly Love, where on Tuesday, August 20, 1935, they took on Ed Bolden's Philadelphia Stars of the Negro National League at the Pennsylvania Railroad Y.M.C.A. Field, 44th Street, and Parkside Avenue.

Toeing the slab for Bushwich, Rube Chambers is opposed by southpaw Lefty Holmes twirling for the Stars.  Philly opens the scoring with three in the second.  But Bushwick answers back in the fourth with three of their own.  The score remains unchanged through the sixth.  The Stars then seize a 4-3 lead in the seventh.

Lefty Holmes issues a walk to Bushwick second baseman Dutch Woerner with two outs in the top of the eighth, then hits right fielder Sol Mishkin with a pitch.  Third baseman Willie Batch singles driving home Woerner, and Eppie Barnes follows with a double plating Mishkin and Batch for a 6-4 lead and the final margin of victory.

Lefty Holmes takes the loss, allowing all six runs on eight hits and five walks with seven strikeouts.  Rube Chambers yields four runs on ten hits and five walks with four strikeouts for the win.

Stars' third baseman Dewey Creacy homers and drives home two.  Right fielder Ted Page and second baseman Dick Seay drive home a run apiece.  Center fielder Lloyd Davenport leads Philly with three hits, including a double with two runs scored.  Catcher Biz Mackey goes 1 for 2 with a run scored, and first baseman Jud Wilson wields a double in three trips to the plate.

On Sunday, August 5, 1934, Max Rosner's Bushwick nine defeated the New Orleans Crescent Stars in both games of a doubleheader at Dexter Park.  Originally formed in 1922 and reformed in 1933, on this day some 1,300 miles away from home, the Crescent Stars are denied victory, but in no way outclassed.

GAME ONE - Fresh off a victory at East Orange, N.J., the Stars in game one are limited to four hits, with Carlisle the second baseman accounting for two.  New Orleans threatens with two runners on and two outs in the eighth but stalls when Flash Miller (?) grounds harmlessly to second.  Bushwick starter Rube Chambers issues three walks and strikes out four in a complete-game shutout victory.  Starting for New Orleans, Williams yields three runs on six hits and five walks in a losing effort.  Batting in the third inning, third baseman Buck Lai is hit by a pitch and soon scores on a fielder's choice; shortstop Joe Benes then singles to right field, scoring the second baseman Jimmy Calleran for a 2-0 Bushwick lead.  The Dexters small-ball their way to a run in the fifth with left fielder Overton Tremper bunting for a hit and scoring on a fielder's choice.  Otherwise, the score remains unchanged through the ninth.  New Orleans commits no errors, and the first baseman Curtis "Popsicle" Harris leads the field with 13 putouts.

GAME TWO - After three scoreless frames, Buckwick jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth.  With Jimmy Calleran on base, recently acquired center fielder from Winchester, Frank Schreich triples to deep center field.  Joe Benes then grounds to second, but Carlise throws errantly in an attempt to catch Schreich at home.  The Crescent Stars get one back in the fifth, right fielder Zollie Wright doubles and scored on catcher Pepper Bassett's base hit to right field.  But then Jimmy Calleran homers in the sixth, starter Art Smith helps his own cause driving home Eppie Barnes in the seventh.  Eppie Barnes, in turn, drives home Benes in the eighth.  New Orleans bunches together three hits for one last tally in the visitor's ninth; Popsicle Harris drives home Pernell giving this game its 5-2 final score.  Crescent Stars' starter Charlie Beverly(?) allows five runs on eight hits, including one home run and five walks with three strikeouts in a losing effort.  New Orleans actually out-hits Bushwick by a 10-8 margin; Popsicle Harris leads the team with three.  But Bushwick hurler Art Smith allows two runs and no walks with two strikeouts and no errors behind him for the win.    

OTD Brooklyn Semipro Rivalry 8/3/1934: With Late Rally Bay Parkway Seizes Victory Over Bushwick at Dexter Park

On Friday, August 3, 1934, in their fourth clash this season, Joe Rosner's Bay Parkway Dukes defeated brother Max Rosner's Bushwicks at Dexter Park.

Behind the strong pitching of Hank Grampp, the Bushwicks appear headed towards a certain victory.  After four scoreless innings, the Dexters plate two runs in the fifth on runs scored by recently signed catcher Charlie Hargreaves (former Brooklyn Dodger) and first baseman Eppie Barnes.  Staked to a 2-0 lead, Grampp continues hurling scoreless baseball through the seventh.

Bay Parkway finally solves Grampp's puzzling efforts with a five-run outburst in the eighth.  After singles by first baseman Gene Rogers and right fielder Bruce Caldwell, pinch-hitter Ike Gould doubles, and Dressen the second baseman singles for three runs, knocking Hank Grampp out of the box.  Facing Art Smith in relief of Grampp, the Dukes score twice more on a walk, a hit by Jim Duffy, and a perfectly executed squeeze-play for a 5-2 lead.

Bushwick picks up an unearned run in the home ninth.  Right fielder Eddie Boland triples and scores on one of three Bay Parkway errors.  Otherwise, Duke's starter Jim "Dizzy" Duffy allows three runs on eight hits (only one for extra bases) and two walks with four strikeouts in a resilient winning effort.

Despite an initial seven exemplary innings pitched, Hank Grampp winds up yielding nine of Bay Parkway's ten hits in a late-inning, albeit a hard-luck loss.  

Bruce Caldwell, in particular, leads the Dukes with a 3 for 5 performance at the plate, and Dizzy Duffy helps his own cause with a double then a single in that big eighth inning. 

Bushwick's second baseman Buck Lai and Grumpp each register a hit and a run batted in. 

The Bay Parkway Dukes now lead the season series against Bushwick, three games to one.

In a back and forth affair, Bay Parkway starter Big Ike Gould outlasts both Bushwick starter Mike DeMucchio and reliever Art Smith for the win.  Gould also flashes his leather skills, initially snaring two potential Bushwick hits laced back through the box.  With Bushwick trailing 10-8 in the ninth, Gould snatches yet another comebacker off the bat of third baseman Buck Lai.  Afterwhich, Bushwick shortstop Dutch Woerner triples, bringing to the plate recent center field acquisition Frank Schreich representing the tying run.  With two outs, Gould offers, and Schreich sends a fly deep to center field where George Andrews cradles the ball for the final out.  

Big Ike Gould yields eight runs on eleven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a winning effort.  Bushwick right fielder Ed Boland poses Gould's biggest threat, going 3 for 4 with a home run; Dutch Woerner and Eppie Barnes also wield multiple hits for the visiting Dexters.

Bushwick's Mike DeMucchio surrenders seven runs on nine hits, and a walk with three strikeouts in just five innings pitched but escapes with a no-decision.  Smith allows three late runs for the loss.  Duke shortstop Roy Tarr goes 3 for 5 with a home run, and right fielder Bruce Caldwell likewise goes 3 for 5 with a double.  The two team up to drive in seven runs for Joe Rosner's Dukes.

OTD 6/7/1931: Brooklyn Royal Giants and Bay Parkways Split Games of a Double-Header at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, June 7, 1931, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Brooklyn Royal Giants and the Dukes of Bay Parkway split games of a doubleheader at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - The Parkways stake starting pitcher O'Grady to a 7-0 lead.  O'Grady, in turn, opens with six scoreless innings pitched.  But the Royal Giants finally break through with three runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth.  Trailing 8-5 entering the ninth, the Royal Giants generate a four-run rally en route to a 9-8 victory.  Brooklyn clearly makes the most of their eight hits yielded by O'Grady, who walks nine batters and strikes out two in a losing effort.  The Bay Parkways totaled 14 hits, with six going for extra bases, highlighted by George Sackett's home run against Pritchard, who nonetheless earns the win.

GAME TWO - Within mere outs of winning game one, the Bay Parkways ensure victory in the second contest with eleven runs and the pitching of Fullerton, who limits the Royal Giants to just one run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in a winning effort.  Royal Giants starter Austin surrenders 15 hits, with eight going for extra bases.  He also drilled Fullerton with a pitch, perhaps for good luck.  Left fielder Namon Washington accounts for three of the Royal Giants' six hits.  However, the major highlight of the game is once again Bay Parkway first baseman George Sackett, who swats two more home runs giving three for the day.

George Sackett is one year removed from playing with New York University.  The debate rages as to who among the semipro locals is the best, George Sackett of Bay Parkway or Bushwick first baseman, Eppie Barnes.
