"BAY RIDGES TROUNCE BAY PARKWAYS, 15-6, IN NIGHT GAME"

On Thursday, August 1, 1935, in a matchup of local rivals played not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Ridge Baseball Club conquers the Bay Parkway Dukes at Bay Ridge Oval, 15th Avenue at 86th Street.

With neighborhood pride on the line, at least half the crowd of 4,500 watches on with great delight as the Bay Ridgers trounce the Dukes by a final score of 15 to 6.  All Bay Ridge batters hit safely, and all but one wield multiple hits.  By the game's end, they strike for twenty hits, including 13 for extra bases, against Bay Parkway starter George Smith and relievers Gannett and Lester.  Smith walks three and strikes out four in the loss.

Third baseman Harry Bennett leads Bay Ridge with four runs driven home.  Second baseman Bobby Cummings goes 3 for 5 with a double, a pair of triples, and two runs batted in.  Left fielder Eddie Marsini accounts for three hits, including a double; center fielder Jeff McDonald goes 2 for 4 with three runs batted in, and first baseman Al Ambramowitz collects three hits, including a triple and home run.

In the ninth, Luciano also homers for the Dukes.  Otherwise, Bay Ridge starter Joe Stryker holds Bay Parkway to six runs on eight hits and five walks with eight strikeouts for the win.  In fact, Luciano leads the Dukes with three hits, including two of four Bay Parkway extra-base hits, Rodriguez and Ike Goldstein account for the others.  Meanwhile, the number five-hitter in the lineup and right fielder Bruce Caldwell strikes out four times.

OTD Brooklyn Semipros 7/30/1939: Bay Parkway Dukes and Homestead Grays Split Games Of A Twin Bill At Erasmus Fied,

On Sunday, July 30, 1939, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the local Bay Parkway Dukes and Homestead Grays split games of a doubleheader at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M Station along the Culver Line.

GAME ONE - The visitors take the first tilt by a score of 8 to 2.  Homestead starter Tom Parker limits Bay Parkway to a pair of runs on ten hits and six walks with three strikeouts for the win.  Arlington, the Duke catcher, and Godfrey drive home Bay Parkway's only runs.  Meanwhile, all but shortstop Jelly Jackson hit safely for the Grays, while five batsmen wield multiple hits.  Homestead strikes for 14 total hits.  Playing first base, Josh Gibson is a perfect 3 for 3 with a double, stolen base, and two runs scored, and right fielder David Whatley is 2 for 5 with a stolen base, home run, and two runs batted in.  Joe Stryker relieves McClosky in the sixth but not before the Bay Parkway starter surrenders three runs in the second and four more in the fifth in a losing effort.

GAME TWO - The Dukes and Grays slug their way to a four-all tie after three.  Afterwhich, Bay Parkway starter Abe Spiro settles down to toss four scoreless innings before yielding Homestead's fifth and final run in the eighth.  All told, Spiro allows just eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts for the win.  There was no stopping Josh Gibson, though.  Back behind the plate, Gibson goes 2 for 3 with a double and run batted in.  Gibson completes the twin bill with five hits in six times at-bat.  Grays starting pitcher  Specs Roberts helps his own cause with two runs batted in, which go for naught.  He otherwise surrenders four runs on seven hits, and one walk with a strikeout in only 2.2 innings pitched for the loss.

BROOKLYN - On Friday, July 9, 1937, within two miles of where I presently live, the Mount Vernon Scarlets defeated the local Bay Ridge nine on their home grounds at 15th Avenue at 86st Street, Brooklyn.  A four-run outburst in the eighth inning seals Mount Vernon's victory.  Bay Ridge starter Simmons yields seven runs on ten hits and three walks with three strikeouts in a losing effort.  For Bay Ridge, their second consecutive loss.

WOODHAVEN - Meanwhile, over at Dexter Park, Bushwick and the Carltons engage in a tightly contested affair.  Center fielder Al Moore crosses the plate in the fourth.  Otherwise, Mount Vernon's young Charles Matuch and Joe "Dutch" Stryker for Bushwick engage in an eight-inning duel.  Facing Stryker in the ninth, pinch hitter Bob Synnott singles to center field, scoring pinch-runner Bill Simmons and catcher Bert Arlington for a 2-1 lead.  The Scarlets' Emil Moskowitz secures the win tossing a scoreless bottom half of the ninth.  This marks only Bushwick's eleventh loss against 24 victories to date.

OTD 6/28/1935: Bay Ridge Falls in Ninth Inning to New York Cubans at Dykman Oval

On Friday, June 28, 1935, Brooklyn's Bay Ridge nine fall in a tightly contested affair against the New York Cubans at Dykman Oval, Inwood section of Manhattan.

New York opens the scoring in the sixth, and Bay Ridge ties the game in the seventh.  Lopez scores for the Cubans, and starter Joe Stryker crosses the plate for Bay Ridge.   Otherwise, Joe Stryker and the Cubans' tandem of Heliodoro Diaz and Luis Tiant duel to a one-all tie through eight.

Facing Stryker in the home ninth, right fielder Alejandro Oms triples off the right-field wall, then scores the winning run on first baseman Lazaro Salazar's base hit.

In a hard-luck loss, Joe Stryker yields but two runs on six hits and just one walk through nine.  Diaz walks one and strikes out three but exits to a no-decision.  Luis Tiant earns the win in relief of Stryker.

Fritz Knothe leads Bay Ridge with three hits, and Jeff McDonald wields a triple in the seven but is left stranded.
