BEFORE the BUMS 7/15/1890: Chicago Colts Bring Brooklyn Bridegrooms Win Streak to a Halt

From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Bridegrooms Bow to Colts; Fall Into First Place Tie With Philadelphia

The Colts punished Bob Caruthers' offerings and knocked him out of the box after yielding six runs on ten hits in four innings.  Summoned into relief, Adonis Terry was treated similarly, allowing another six runs on eight hits.  Chicago had amassed ten runs by the time the Bridegrooms awoke from their six-inning slumber as the crowd of 1,461 began heading towards the exits.  Only then did the Bridegroom bats come alive, scoring six runs over the final three innings to make the outcome more respectable.  All Chicago batters wielded at least one hit, while manager and first baseman Cap Anson led the Colts with three hits and three runs batted in.  Bob Caruthers suffered his seventh defeat as Brooklyn's consecutive game win streak was halted at eleven.  Meanwhile, manager McGunnigle continues incurring injuries to his outfield.  In the third inning, while playing left field, Adonis Terry collided with recently signed Patsy Donovan, who was knocked senseless and carried off the lot.  The return of regular center fielder Pop Corkhill is not expected until late August.
  • FINAL: CHI 12; BKN 6
  • RECORD: 45-25 (.643); tied 1st place with Philadelphia Phillies
