BEFORE the BUMS 7/14/1890: Brooklyn Bridegrooms Defeat Chicago Colts; Extend Win Streak to Eleven

From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Bridegrooms Win Eleventh in a Row; Take Opener Against Anson's Colts

Brooklyn outpaced the Colts early and left them far behind in the later innings.  Chicago opened the scoring in the top of the first, but Hub Collins and Dave Foutz helped the Bridegrooms rally for a pair.  First baseman Cap Anson's sacrifice tied the game at two, and the Bridegrooms again responded with two runs on Dave Foutz's triple in the third.  The Colts would not score against starter Tom Lovett again until the eighth inning.  By then, the Bridegrooms had already tallied ten runs.  Foutz finished with two hits and three runs batted in; Collins had three hits and delivered home a pair; Lovett helped himself with three hits, and George Pinkney drove in two.  Lovett held the Colts to three runs on six hits and five walks for his fifteenth win this season against six losses.  The game marks Brooklyn's season-high eleventh consecutive win.
  • FINAL: CHI 3; BKN 10
  • RECORD: 45-24 (.652); 1st place, 1.0 GA Philadelphia Phillies
