OTD Brooklyn Semipros 7/19/1925: Nazareth, PA., Nine Defeat Bay Ridge In Both Games of Twin Bill at Graham Field

From the desk: BROOKLYN SEMIPROS

On Sunday, July 19, 1925, not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Pennsylvania club of Nazareth, in front of 3,000 fans, takes both games of a doubleheader from Bay Ridge at Graham Field, 15th Avenue at 86th Street, Brooklyn.

Noteworthy and commendable in both effort and performance, Nazareth screwball artist and spitballer Charlie Stauffer, with savvy effectiveness throughout, starts and wins each game against Bay Ridge.

Stauffer limits the Ridgers to one run on seven hits (none for extra bases) and one walk with seven strikeouts through nine in the first contest.  After reaching safely on a single Bay Ridge second baseman, Knothe spoils the shutout when he scores on an errant throw by Heath, the Nazareth catcher.  Bay Ridge starter Artie Gardner, a former pitcher for the Yankees and Newark Bears, allows five runs on 14 hits (four for extra bases) and three walks with three strikeouts in a losing effort.

Charlie Stauffer is even better in game two, limiting the Ridgers to just four hits and two walks in a complete-game shutout encore.  For Bay Ridge, Burks yields seven hits and is relieved with no outs in the third.  In relief of Burks, Boyland allows eight more hits over the final seven innings en route to a 12-0 defeat and twin bill sweep at the hands of Nazareth.
