N.Y. Mets: deGrom Ups Ante For Second Straight Cy Young Award

From the desk of: HEAD-BUTTING MR. MET

DODGERS GET deGROMINATED

Jacob deGrom's latest performance accomplishes two things: it keeps the Mets playoff aspirations alive, but also sends a strong message aimed at writers/award voters.

They say if you want to be the best you have to beat the best.  That's exactly what Jacob deGrom does on Saturday at Citi Field.  He allows the Los Angeles Dodgers no runs on just three hits and no walks with eight strikeouts through seven innings pitched, but typically does not figure in the decision.  Neither does his opponent Hyun-Jin Ryu, deGrom's chief competition for this season's Cy Young award.  Ryu likewise limits the Mets to a pair of hits and fans six through seven scoreless innings pitched.

  • Now in his sixth season with the Mets one-third of all deGrom's starts have ended up being no decisions.  Another 39% go for victories, while 29% go for losses.

On Saturday Jacob deGrom limits his opponents to three hits or less for the eighth time this season.  It's also the 22nd time this season he allows two earned runs or less.  He owns a 2.61 ERA through 190 innings pitched with a league best 239 strikeouts and 1.005 WHiP.  He has thrown double-digit strikeouts nine times this season, while his 11.3 K/9 average to date is presently a career best.

National League Rank:
  • #1 WHiP
  • #1 Strikeouts
  • #1 WAR (6.3)
  • #2 QS
  • #2 Defense Independent ERA
  • #3 ERA
  • #4 K/BB Ratio

Therein lies Jacob deGrom's case for a second straight Cy Young award.  Along with Hyun-Jin Ryu, Jacob is also in competition with Max Scherzer, and outsiders Mike Soroka and Walker Buehler.  Otherwise Clayton Kershaw leads the best of the rest.

He might be able to squeeze in three more starts this season.  The way things are going, deGrom just may get to start that final game of the regular season against Atlanta.

The Mets have between now and then to make it a meaningful start.
