N.Y. Mets: What Light Breaks Through Yonder Schedule?

From the desk of:  HEAD-BUTTING MR. MET

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer

Don't look now but here come the Mets.  Despite a poorly constructed roster, most agreed there came a point in July where they simply could not be this bad, this long.  And that at some point the law of averages would catch up and affect a correction.  Fast forward, and they've closed to within one game of .500 and are now just three games back of the second wild card.

Since returning from the All-Star break they've gone 15-6 (.714), and are now 9-1 in their last ten games.  They're getting it done largely through pitching.  The starters are providing much needed length while the bullpen is elevating their effectiveness.

However, this recent amalgamation of success has come at the expense of some of the league's lesser competitors such as San Diego, Miami, Pittsburgh, and the Chicago White Sox.  It begs the question: just how good are they, and is this the beginning of a legitimate run towards meaningful games in September?

They'll continue answering that question today with a double-header against the Miami Marlins as part of a four game series.  However, they proceed forward minus the services of Robinson Cano who strained his hamstring during Sunday's game against the Pirates.

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer.

Grrrr!
