Bridegrooms Defeat John Clarkson

Brooklyn won their second straight against the visiting Beaneaters.  The teams traded runs in the third inning, and the score remained unchanged through the fifth.  Boston took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, whereas the Bridegrooms were limited to just three hits.  But that all changed in the seventh.  The Beaneaters extended their lead by two in the top half of the frame.  However, with four runs in the bottom of the frame, the Bridegrooms seized a 5-3 lead.  Brooklyn then scored an insurance run.  Center fielder Darby O'Brien tripled home two runs in the seventh, and starter Tom Lovett aided his own cause with a home run in the eighth.  The Beaneaters scored once in the ninth.  Three-time National League wins leader 

John Clarkson yielded eight hits and walked five in the loss.

Bridegrooms Return Home, Defeat Beaneaters

A crowd of 1,181 at Washington Park welcomed back their Bridegrooms.  Facing Adonis Terry, Boston right fielder Steve Brody knocked home the game's first run in the opening frame.  In the Brooklyn third, infield errors by Chippy McGarr and Lou Hardie cleared the way for three unearned runs.  But with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Beaneaters tied the game at three.  However, they once again compromised themselves with poor fielding.  Brooklyn scored four times in the seventh inning to post a 7-3 victory.  Boston starter Kid Nichols otherwise limited Brooklyn to five hits, including a triple by George Pinkney in the third.  For the win, Adonis Terry allowed three runs on eight scattered hits and four walks.

The Blueshirts just can't have nice things ... like a 2-0 series lead.  

It was nice while it lasted.  

Their inability to possess the puck and sustain offensive zone presence is mind-numbing.  They spend too much time cycling the puck and setting up for a one-and-done instead of just putting shots on the net and cleaning up the garbage.  They get the puck deep, so why not more setups from behind the net?

Once again they're caught up in being too cute.  It's been this way throughout all three series, so this is nothing new.  But will they recognize in time as they did in previous rounds?  

We'll see Friday night.

Let's see what adjustments they make.  Because the Rangers have become very predictable in all their setups and strategy.  The Rangers failed to score an even-strength goal at Tampa's arena.  Said another way, the Bolts have dominated the Rangers over the last five periods.  Tampa has them figured out.  That's a problem, and Coach Gallant needs to solve it.  When Adam Fox leads all skaters in minutes but fails to take a single shot, it's because the Rangers are at the other end of the ice.  Thus, Fox finished game four with a minus-three.

The Rangers played without Ryan Strome and Filip Chytil.  Missing two centermen matters.  Jacob Trouba stepped in with a team-high seven SOGs.  But none found their way past Andrei Vasilevskiy who stopped 34 of 35 shots.

And so here we go again ...

Defend this house!

The Rangers have the home-ice advantage; game five and a potential game seven are slated for the Garden.  Whoever wins two of the following three games advances to the Stanley Cup Finals.  The other team will go home and ponder their salary cap situation.

Rangers Let Tampa Back in Series

What did I say ...

A two-game lead heading into Tampa means nothing if you can't finish!

The Bolts took 52 SOGs, with 19 coming in the third period.  The Rangers had just six shots after getting off a dozen in the first and second periods.  

They played too close to the fire in the final session and got burned with a mere 0:42 seconds left in regulation.  This isn't the first time we've seen them adopt this defensive posture.  Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad were on the ice and solely blamed themselves.  Noble, but a poor finish nonetheless.

Andrei Vasilevskiy played his best game of the series.  The first period was Andrei versus Igor.  Each team had numerous scoring opportunities.  The second period was all about the power play in which the Blueshirts closed out the session with a 2-1 advantage.  But it didn't last.  Steven Stamkos scored on another Tampa power play at 1:12 of the third period tying the game at two.

The Rangers were 2 for 5 on the power play.  They completely blew a golden opportunity when the Bolts got whistled for a double-minor but ruined things with a penalty of their own.

All the big men on campus skated to a stalemate until the final minute.  Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Chris Kreider accounted for six points for the Rangers.  Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman, and Corey Perry accounted for eight points, including assists on the game-winning goal by Ondrej Palat, who made it nine points for Tampa.

Vasilevskiy and the Lightning finally showed up and played their best game this series.  Even then, victory was within the Rangers' grasp.

Hopefully, Ryan Strome and Barclay Goodrow are up for the challenge of game four.

Base hits by Hub Collins and Oyster Burns and a triple by Darby O'Brien highlighted a three-run first inning for the Bridegrooms.  Facing Adonis Terry, the Phillies tallied two in the third and one in the fourth, tying the game at three.  After a scoreless fifth inning, Pop Corkhill singled off Kid Gleason, driving in the go-ahead run.  Adonis Terry kept Philadelphia scoreless over his last five innings pitched for the win.

The first-place Phillies take the second game to break even with Brooklyn.  Making his first start of the season, native Philadelphia right-hander Jack McFetridge limited the Bridegrooms to just one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts for the win.  He also helped himself at the plate with three hits in four turns at-bat.  First baseman Dave Foutz made an increasingly rare start on the mound.  He allowed four runs, three earned, on 14 hits and two walks with two strikeouts in a losing effort.  Hub Collins doubled and scored in the third inning to spoil the shutout.

Bridegrooms Watch Sam Thompson's Fly Clear the Fence

The Phillies affirmed their first-place standing with a thrilling ninth-inning victory over the visiting Bridegrooms.  Brooklyn opened the scoring in the second on Pop Corkhill's double, scoring George Pinkney from first.  A gaggle of Philadelphia errors helped Brooklyn load the bases in the fourth.  Right fielder Oyster Burns sent all runners trotting homeward with a home run over the right field fence.  But the Bridegrooms would score no more.  Philadelphia right-hander Kid Gleason held the visitors to just five hits.  Meanwhile, the Phillies scored a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth, then tied the game at five with a run in the seventh.  With two outs in the home ninth, Philadelphia's slugging outfielder 

Sam Thompson connected off Brooklyn starter Tom Lovett for a game-ending home run to right field.

Into Enemy Territory, They Go

Pack your sunscreen!  

It's on to Tampa Bay for games three and four.  Life is different down there.  Expect changes.  The Bolts are the defending two-time Stanley Cup champions.  That means something.  Exactly what remains to be seen.  But rest assured, a two-game series lead means little unless you finish.

That being said, the Rangers appear to be getting better with each passing game and have yet to reach their peak.  Their stars are shining brightly, the kids are improving with every shift, and the blueliners are performing very well.  

In case anyone forgot, Carolina was the stingiest regular-season team in hockey, not the Lightning.  The Rangers jumped that hurdle.  After the Hurricanes, you guessed it, the Rangers yielded the second-fewest goals.

Speaking of which, the opposition would have even fewer goals if not for Ryan Lindgren, who has now tipped three pucks past Igor Shesterkin.  Nikita Kucherov's shot at 2:41 of the first period was a frisbee until tipped by Lindgren.  Afterwhich the puck toppled end over end until it found the back of the net.  Corey Perry never touched it.  However, that Tampa Bay power-play opportunity should never have been.  Ryan Reaves and Pat Maroon should have been sent to the box, or none of them, not just Reaves. 

But the resilient Rangers answered right back.  K'Andre Miller tied the game at the 5:59 mark on a setup from Chris Kreider.  The shot was initially blocked by Brandon Hagel.  But Miller secured his own rebound and scored on Andrei Vasilevskiy's glove side.  

It's good to see K'Andre's efforts rewarded for such brilliant defensive play throughout the playoffs.  Miller and the blueliners have been stellar.  Jacob Trouba laid another big hit, this time to Anthony Cirelli.  Adam Fox continues to be the master of puck possession and movement, and all you need to do with Ryan Lindgren is wind him up and see him go.

The Kid Line once again announced their presence with authority.  With time winding down in the first period, Kaapo Kakko tipped in a perfect feed from Adam Fox, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead.  Filip Chytil also assisted in the play.  The kids created numerous other scoring opportunities.

After a scoreless second period, Tampa committed one of the cardinal sins of hockey by allowing a goal inside the first two minutes of the third period.  At the 1:21 mark, Mika Zibanejad scored from the left wing, beating Vasilevskiy once again high on his blocker side.  Chris Kreider registered his second assist.  It was the game's decisive goal as Nicholas Paul scored at 17:58 to bring the Bolts within one.

Igor Shesterkin was the hero, again, stopping 29 of 31 shots.  He is by far outclassing Andrei Vasilevskiy in the net.

Hello Sunshine State ... and all the relocated New Yorkers and retirees just waiting to don their Rangers jerseys and storm Amalie Arena.

Ninth Inning Rally Gives Cyclones 3-2 Series Advantage

Things went wildly wrong for Cyclone starter Mike Vasil in the bottom of the first.  A hit by pitch, two hits, and a balk partly helped stake Jersey Shore to an abrupt 4-0 lead.  

Third baseman Warren Saunders homered for Brooklyn leading off the third, and Jose Mena doubled and scored in the fourth.  Afterwhich, the score remained unchanged through the eighth inning.

Jersey Shore would suffer a fielding and battery implosion in the top of the ninth.  Brooklyn scored six runs, five of which were unearned.  Two fielding errors, a catcher's interference call, and a passed ball aided the cause.  Shortstop Branden Fryman and Joe Suozzi each tripled in the inning.  Suozzi accounted for three of Brooklyn's five hits and delivered home three runs.

After the first inning, Brooklyn pitching limited the Blue Claws to just one hit the rest of the way.  Mike Vasil recovered and escaped with a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts through five.  Left-hander Nathan Lavender threw two scoreless innings.  Right-hander Grant Hartwig closed out the game with two scoreless frames and five strikeouts for the win.

Darius Victor Runs to Daylight

New Jersey powers past the Pittsburgh Maulers for their seventh straight victory.  Their 29 points scored are a new season-high, while the game marked the sixth time the Generals held their opponent under twenty points.

After the teams traded first-quarter touchdowns, the Generals posted 16 unanswered points in the second quarter and took a 23-7 lead into the half.

Luis Perez remained behind the helm.  He completed 18 of 24 attempts for season-high 220 yards with a touchdown pass and no turnovers.  KaVontae Turpin caught five passes for 83 yards and connected with Perez on a 24-yard play for six points.

The Generals ran for 159 yards.  With 17 rushes for 87 yards and three touchdowns, Darius Victor led the way.  He now leads the USLF with nine rushing touchdowns.  Trey Williams was next with 12 attempts for 66 yards.

New Jersey wins the season series against Pittsburgh and has two games remain on the schedule against the Michigan Panthers and Philadelphia Stars.

Entering week eight, only the Birmingham Stallions had a better record.

The Bridegrooms appeared to have exhausted their offensive prowess in the previous day's affair.  One day after posting twenty runs, Brooklyn was held scoreless for all except the sixth inning.  Giants' right-hander Amos Rusie limited the visitors to just five scattered hits and four walks with five strikeouts for the win.  New York salvaged the finale to take the first National League series between teams two games to one.  Third baseman George Pinkney drew a base on balls leading off the Brooklyn ninth.  But after Oyster Burns struck out, the game ended on a double-play.  Right-hander Adonis Terry surrendered four runs on eight hits and five walks with six strikeouts in a losing effort.

Bridegrooms Rout Giants at Polo Grounds

Those who believed the heavy-hitting Bridegrooms this season would be quelled by National League pitching are mistaken.  Brooklyn is easily the highest-scoring team in the circuit and has now scored in double digits for the sixth time in 32 games.  The Bridegrooms set a new season-high with twenty runs scored against the Giants on Tuesday.  To the dismay of 528 fans present at the Polo Grounds, the City of Churches posted ten runs in the second inning, then tallied ten more over the remaining course of the contest.  First baseman Dave Foutz wielded a double and triple, and Hub Collins stole three bases.  Starter Tom Lovett threw up zeroes in seven of nine frames, walking six and striking out six for the win.  Giant rookie southpaw Jesse Burkett was knocked out of the box early in a losing effort.

Kid Line Short Circuits the Bolts

Was Tampa rusty after a nine-day break?

Perhaps ...

Do I expect more from them as the series progresses?

Absolutely.

But in no way will I minimize what the Rangers accomplished on Wednesday.  It was a stellar effort.  They were on the attack early, won the faceoff battle, and converted on the power play while killing off three.  

Moreover, it was smartly played hockey.  Mika Zibanejad faked a shot and fed Chris Kreider.  Filip Chytil hopped back to create a better passing angle for Kaapo Kakko, the now-famous "shift," or Ryan Reaves waiting for the right moment to send a message; it all wreaked of cohesiveness.

The Kreider/Zibanejad/Vatrano line scored the Rangers' first two goals.  Vatrano chipped the puck along the boards into the offensive zone in the opening moments.  Mika Zibanejad retrieved it in the right circle and passed it to a waiting Chris Kreider in the slot, who wristed it past Andrei Vasilevskiy at 1:11 of the first period.  Seven minutes later, Steven Stamkos tied the game at one.  Then at 7:50 of the second period, Frank Vatrano received the puck from Adam Fox and unleashed a sneaky shot from the slot for a 2-1 Rangers lead.  

As expected, Tampa tied the game at two.  

But then came the Kid Line to the rescue.  

They say that lightning doesn't strike the same spot twice.  That is unless you're Filip Chytil.  The Rangers' 23-year-old center is on fire.  He scored at 10:09 of the second period on feeds from Alexis LaFreniere and Kaapo Kakko.  A little over five minutes later, Chytil scored again off a cross-seam pass by K'Andre Miller.  He now has five goals in his last three games.

Artemi Panarin made his deliveries in the third period.  The Bread Man scored just 0:30 into the period on feeds from Andrew Copp and Jacob Trouba.  Panarin then assisted on Mika Zibanejad's power-play goal at the 6:06 mark.

Ryan Reaves and the fourth line very strategically notified Tampa that they aren't putting up with any crap in the closing minutes.

... a complete team effort.

My heart stooped when I saw Igor Shesterkin lying face down on the ice.  It appeared as if Nikita Kucherov buried his stick into the neck of Shesterkin.  But Igor rubbed it off to stop 37 of 39 shots on goal.

Some say Vasilevkiy was rusty.  I say he was perplexed.  The Rangers had him moving left and right.

By game seven of the first round, it finally dawned on the Blueshirts that their best scoring opportunities were shooting top shelf.  

Kreider scored high, blocker side moving right.  Vatrano also scored high on the blocker side.  Both Chytil goals were high glove side while moving left.  Artemi Panarin's goal mimicked Kreider and Vatrano, high on the blocker side.  Mika Zibanejad's power-play goal in third was likewise high on the blocker side, which confirmed Andrei Vasilevskiy has his issues.

Not all of that was rust.

Giants Rally in Ninth for Series Opening Victory

Brooklyn made their much anticipated first trip this season to the Polo Grounds, where they were met with defeat at the hands of Amos Rusie and the New York Giants.  It was the Bridegrooms who jumped out to an early lead.  Brooklyn scored runs in the first and fourth innings.  The teams traded a pair of runs in the fifth.  Brooklyn took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning despite only five hits and no earned runs.  But it did not last.  The Giants were down to their last out in the home half of the frame when they bunched together four hits and three runs.  First baseman Dude Easterbrook, who wielded a game-high four hits, knocked home the winning run as the Giants closed out a 6-4 come from behind victory.  Giant batters punished the offerings of Bob Caruthers for 13 hits.  Amos Rusie struck out five Bridegroom batters in a winning effort.

Cyclones Mid-Game Eruption Wipes Out Jersey Shore

Making his fourth start since being promoted from St. Lucie, southpaw Nick Zwack faced 14 batters while throwing 58 pitches, with 44 (75.8%) going for strikes.  He allowed two earned runs on four hits and no walks, with four strikeouts through three innings pitched.

Jersey Shore jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first, then tacked on a run in the fourth inning against Oscar Rojas, pitching in relief of Zwack.  

With one out and the bases jammed in the visitor's fifth, catcher Matt O'Neill sent everyone home with a triple to center field and then scored on a JT Schwartz base hit.

The Blue Claws pitched themselves into a world of trouble in the fifth.  Brooklyn loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch.  Shortstop Shervyen Newton was hit by a pitch forcing home a run, and Matt O'Neill drew another walk, forcing home another run.  With two outs, JT Schwartz cleared the bases with a triple to center and scored on an errant throw by the shortstop.

Oscar Rojas yielded one unearned run on four hits, no walks with eight strikeouts over five innings for the win, and Hunter Parsons surrendered a run while closing out the ninth.
