From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS
In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born. While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club. The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day. Bridegrooms Send National League Very Clear Message
The National League's top contenders took the field for a single-game showdown at Washington Park. In a makeup game from May 1, center fielder Darby O'Brien led an 18-hit attack against Boston's best. Already leading 7-2 through the fifth, the Grooms erupted for another six runs in the sixth inning to knock starter John Clarkson out of the box. Every Bridegroom wielded at least one hit. O'Brien led the charge with five, including two doubles, and Dave Foutz doubled, tripled, and drove in a run. Second baseman Hub Collins homered and plated three runs, and third sacker George Pinkney also homered. Starter Tom Lovett helped himself with a double and two runs batted in. He otherwise held the Beaneaters to four runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts for his 26th victory this season. The win was Brooklyn's eighth in a row - their third such streak this season - and marks their largest lead in the standings to date, a 6.5 game margin over the second-place Beaneaters with less than twenty games left to play. Boston now heads to Philadelphia while Brooklyn will welcome Jim Mutrie's New York Giants.
