OTD Brooklyn Semipros 8/10/1930: Bay Parkways Win Twin Bill; Defeat N.Y. Fire Department and Entente of Williamsburg at Erasmus Field

On Sunday, August 10, 1930, not more than two miles from where I presently live, before a crowd of 3,000 fans, the Bay Parkway Dukes swept a twin bill with victories over the New York Fire Department and the Entente club of Williamsburg at Erasmus Field, McDonald Avenue at the Avenue M station along the elevated Culver Line.

GAME ONE vs. New York Fire Department

Bay Parkway promptly scores three runs in the opening innings.  But their lead does not last.  The Firemen surge ahead with a five-run outburst in the third and three more runs in the fourth.  Manager George Lippe is forced to pull starter Rube McKenty in favor of Brooklyn native and fan favorite Eddie Marsini, who extinguishes the threat.  The Dukes recover three runs in the bottom half of the fourth for a more manageable 8-6 deficit.  After which, Eddie Marsini limits the Firemen to no runs on just five hits the rest of the way.  Meanwhile, Bay Parkway finally knocks Fire Department starter Tom Noonan out of the box.  The Dukes rally for a run in the seventh and then in the eighth push across the tying and decisive runs towards a 9-8 victory.  The Firemen connect against Rube McKenty for one home run, while the Dukes wield two, one by Larry Fischer, the other by Weismier.

GAME TWO vs. Entente of Williamsburg

In the nightcap, Dukes' starter Wuzzy Fullerton limits the visitors from nearby Williamsburg to one run on just three scattered hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over nine innings pitched for the win.  Entente shortstop O'Donnell wields Williamsburg's lone extra-base hit.  Duke's third baseman, Vermilyea, accounts for three hits, including a double, home run, and first baseman George Sackett also takes a trot around the bases.

Meanwhile, nearby in the Inter-City circuit ...

In a tightly contested affair, the Coney Island Democrats break a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the eighth.  Flatbush F.C. rallies for three runs in the top of the ninth to no avail.  

Starting for Coney Island, Clemens allows three late runs on eight hits while helping himself at the plate with two hits and a run scored.  Perhaps demonstrating Clemen's effectiveness, catcher Murphy leads all fielders with 15 putouts behind the plate.  Hurling for Brooklyn FC, Stepper also wields two hits and scored a run.  However, on the mound, he yields four runs on seven hits in a losing effort.  

Brooklyn's left fielder, Meyers, and Coney Island's center fielder, Phalen, wield two hits each.

OTD in Brooklyn Semipros 8/1/1935: Bay Parkway Dukes Routed By Local Rival Bay Ridge Club

"BAY RIDGES TROUNCE BAY PARKWAYS, 15-6, IN NIGHT GAME"

On Thursday, August 1, 1935, in a matchup of local rivals played not more than two miles from where I presently live, the Bay Ridge Baseball Club conquers the Bay Parkway Dukes at Bay Ridge Oval, 15th Avenue at 86th Street.

With neighborhood pride on the line, at least half the crowd of 4,500 watches on with great delight as the Bay Ridgers trounce the Dukes by a final score of 15 to 6.  All Bay Ridge batters hit safely, and all but one wield multiple hits.  By the game's end, they strike for twenty hits, including 13 for extra bases, against Bay Parkway starter George Smith and relievers Gannett and Lester.  Smith walks three and strikes out four in the loss.

Third baseman Harry Bennett leads Bay Ridge with four runs driven home.  Second baseman Bobby Cummings goes 3 for 5 with a double, a pair of triples, and two runs batted in.  Left fielder Eddie Marsini accounts for three hits, including a double; center fielder Jeff McDonald goes 2 for 4 with three runs batted in, and first baseman Al Ambramowitz collects three hits, including a triple and home run.

In the ninth, Luciano also homers for the Dukes.  Otherwise, Bay Ridge starter Joe Stryker holds Bay Parkway to six runs on eight hits and five walks with eight strikeouts for the win.  In fact, Luciano leads the Dukes with three hits, including two of four Bay Parkway extra-base hits, Rodriguez and Ike Goldstein account for the others.  Meanwhile, the number five-hitter in the lineup and right fielder Bruce Caldwell strikes out four times.
