BOXSCORE 2/6/21 - The battle to be crowned Caribbean Series champion features Puerto Rico southpaw Hector Hernandez who is opposed by right-hander Cesar Valdez for the Dominican Republic.  A double from shortstop  Ramon Torres leading off the first accounts for the only hit through the game's first four innings.  In the top of the fifth, designated hitter Juan Centeno singles for Los Criollos' first hit.  Centeno advances on a wild pitch, then scores on center fielder Jarren Duran's two-out hit through the right side.  But the lead does not last long.  With two outs in the bottom of the frame, third baseman  Johan Camargo ties the game at one with a home run to left.  Right-hander Luis Castillo relieves Cesar Valdez in the sixth.  Right-hander Anthony Maldonado likewise enters the game for Caguas.  Leading-off, Ramon Torres greets Maldonado with a single.  Center fielder Juan Lagares follows with a double scoring Torres all the way from first.  First baseman Ronald Guzman then singles driving home Lagares for a 3-1 Cibaeñas lead.  After hitting left fielder Junior Lake with a pitch, Maldonado is relieved by  Zach Muckenhirn, who strikes out Jonathan Villar swinging.  With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Ronald Guzman homers off reliever Fernando Cruz giving Los Aguilas a 4-1 lead.  Right-hander Jumbo Diaz retires Caguas to close out the victory and earn the save in order in the top of the ninth.  Luis Castillo earns the win.  Anthony Maldonado takes the loss.

The Dominican Republic wins back-to-back titles and their tournament-leading 21st Caribbean championship overall.  Los Aguilas Cibaeñas now ranks second all-time with their sixth ever Caribbean title.  This is the second time (1998) Cibaeñas has gone on an undefeated run.  Only 13 teams have gone on undefeated runs in the 63-year history of the tournament.

BOXSCORE 2/5/21 - Right-hander Manuel Campos toes the rubber for Panama and is opposed by Carlos Martinez for Cibaeñas.  The two duel through five scoreless frames.  However, both are dispatched to the showers by the sixth.  Martinez hits a batter and walks two more to load the bases, but right-hander Luis Castillo enters the game to put out the fire.  Panama is not as fortunate.  Manuel Campos yields consecutive hits to Juan Lagares and Robinson Cano, followed by a double from first baseman Ronald Guzman which scores both runners.  But as the Fates would have it, Panama ties the game in the seventh.  Robinson Cano's error clears the way for two runs crossing the plate on a Rodrigo Orozco base hit to right.  Otherwise, the struggle for runs continues.  Facing Fernando Abad with one out in the top of the ninth, Federales designated hitter Belarmino Campos doubles, and center fielder  Jhonny Santos reaches on an infield hit to third.  Rodrigo Orozco then singles up the middle, scoring Campos.  Right-hander Wirfin Obispo ends the threat in relief of Abad but not before Panama takes a 3-2 lead.  Chiriqui reliever Walter Silva returns to the mound for his third inning of work.  With one out, Melky Cabrera singled, and pinch-runner Yefri Perez steals second.  Designated hitter Rangel Ravelo grounds out to third for out number two.  Afterwhich, Silva intentionally walks Johan Camargo, and an infield hit to short from Junior Lake loads the bases.  Panama makes no move to relieve Walter Silva.  With two outs, replacement catcher Carlos Paulino lines sharply back through the middle, scoring both the tying and the game-winning run.  A certain manager is sure to be questioned in the post-game presser.  The Dominican Republic remains undefeated and awaits the winner between Puerto Rico and Mexico.  Starter Carlos Martinez is stellar but comes away with a no-decision upon allowing no runs on just one hit and four walks with eight strikeouts through 5.2 innings pitched.  Fernando Abad is let off the hook.  Wirfin Obispo earns the victory in relief.

BOXSCORE 2/2/21 - In the battle of the undefeated, heads up base running gives Cibaeñas the early lead.  With one out, Los Aguilas load the bases.  Melky Cabrera lofts a pop-fly in foul territory behind third.  Juan Lagares smartly tags up and scores as third baseman Hector Gomez is out of position to make a throw home.  Los Federales get right back in the game when Jesus Lopez scores on an error by Cibaeñas second baseman Robel Garcia.  However, by the fourth, the roof begins caving in on Panama.  Two Chiriqui fielding errors in the fourth directly lead to three runs.  With the bases loaded in the fifth, catcher Francisco Pena doubles sending everybody home for a commanding 8-1 lead.  Still not through, Cibaeñas scores late.  Melky Cabrera doubles and drives home two in the eighth and another Chiriqui error this time by shortstop Jorge Bishop leads to one more run in the ninth.  Panama finally strings together several hits against reliever Michael Tonkin who walks in a run, then yields two more hits and two more runs.  Tonkin is relieved with two outs after allowing five hits and a walk.  Right fielder Willy Garcia greets new reliever Jhan Marinez with a single through the left side scoring one run.  Designated hitter David Rodriguez then draws a walk to reload the bases.  Third baseman Hector Gomez steps in and is caught looking at strike three.  Panama posts five runs in the inning, but it's not nearly enough as the Dominican Republic wins their third straight game, this one by an 11-6 final score.  Aguilas starter Joe Van Meter allows just one unearned run on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings for the victory.  Melky Cabrera and Francisco Pena finish with three runs batted in apiece.  Designated hitter Robinson Cano goes 2 for 2 with a run batted in.

BOXSCORE 1/31/21 - Team Venezuela seizes the honor of scoring the first run of the 2021 Serie del Caribe.  With one out in the bottom of the first, third baseman Willians Astudillo doubles to left and scores on a base hit from left fielder Danry Vasquez.  Panama sends a quick reminder of who the 2019 Caribbean champions were.  Back-to-back doubles leading-off the top of the second from designated hitter David Rodriguez and third baseman Hector Gomez tie the game at one.  Venezuela retakes the lead in the bottom of the third on a lead-off home run from center fielder Herlis Rodriguez.  But, back comes Panama.  With two outs in the top of the fourth, consecutive hits from catcher Rodrigo Vigil, center fielder Jhonny Santos, and shortstop Jonathan Araúz knot the game at two.  Los Caribes once again retake the lead on catcher Jesus Sucre's home run to left, making it a 3-2 game in favor of Venezuela.  Once again, Panama strikes back.  Hector Gomez opens the bottom of the sixth with a double, then scored on a base hit back through the middle from first baseman Carlos Quiros.  Soon after, Jonathan Araúz singles home Rodrigo Vigil forcing a pitching change.  Second baseman Jesus Lopez greets Caribes reliever Andres E. Perez with a double to left scoring Araúz.  Two more consecutive hits from left fielder Allen Cordoba and clean-up batter Willy Garcia give Los Federales a 6-3 lead and the final margin of victory.  Panam starter Harold Arauz yields three runs on six hits and no walks with two strikeouts through 4.2 innings pitched but does not figure in the decision.  Southpaw  Austin Warner earns the victory with 2.2 scoreless innings pitched.  Right-hander Severino Gonzalez earns the save.  Caribes reliever Mayckol Guaipe suffers the loss.

BOXSCORE 1/31/21 - Taking on last year's defending champion, Puerto Rico opens the scoring against the Dominican Republic.  Center fielder Jarren Duran singles, leading-off the game, then steals second.  After advancing to third, Duran scores on a single from designated hitter Jose Miranda.  In the bottom of the third, Caguas starter Luis Medina issues a one-out walk.  Right fielder Melky Cabrera follows with a single through the middle, and center fielder Juan Lagares clears the bases with a home run to left, giving Cibaeñas a 3-1 lead.  With two outs and two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth, Juan Lagares again clears the bases with a line single to center for a 5-1 lead.  Luis Medina then issues a base on balls to Robinson Cano, and it's off to the showers he goes.  Puerto Rico loads the bases in the sixth on two walks and a hit-by-pitch.  That's enough for Cibaeñas to replace starter Carlos Martinez.  With two outs, reliever Luis Castillo induces third baseman Emmanuel Rivera into a groundball to third.  Yadier Molina doubles in the eighth for only Puerto Rico's fourth hit of the game.  Otherwise, Caguas fades with the setting sun.  Luis Medina takes the loss, allowing five runs, but only three earned, on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.  Aguilas' starter Carlos Martinez earns the victory, yielding just one first-inning run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts through 5.2 innings pitched.  Three Cibaeñas relievers join in limiting Caguas to one hit and no walks through 3.1 innings pitched.  Southpaw Fernando Abad strikes out the side in the ninth to close out Los Aguilas' first victory of the tournament.

BOXSCORE 1/31/21 - Mexico opens with a commanding 10-2 victory over Colombia.  After trading runs with Los Caimenes in the first, Los Tomateros strike for six runs in the fifth and another three runs in the ninth inning.   Designated hitter Jesse Castillo goes 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a home run, and three runs batted in.  Center fielder Jose Cardona and left fielder Joey Meneses each drive in two runs apiece.  Starter Manny Barreda yields two runs, just one earned, on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts through six innings for the victory.  Former New York Mets infielder Dilson Herrera and catcher Carlos Martinez drive in a run each for Colombia.

Chalk one up for old school béisbol.  Los Aguilas Cibaeñas, founded in 1933, come back, all the way back, from a 3-1 series deficit, winning three in a row against Los Gigantes del Cibao to capture their league record 22nd LIDOM championship.

BOXSCORE 1/18/2021 - Game Seven of the Lidom Championship Series begins quietly, with only a base hit from Cibao's Kelvin Gutierrez to speak of.  In the second, Cibañas starter Andy Otero strikes out the side.  Aguilas' third baseman Johan Camargo breaks the silence in the third inning with a home run to right off Gigantes' starter Chris Ellis.  Cibao strikes back in the fifth with three straight hits, an RBI from first baseman Ronald Guzman, and a Kelvin Gutierrez sac-fly for a 2-1 lead.  However, their lead is short-lived.  A sixth-inning home run by red hot Juan Lagares ties the game at two.  With one out in the seventh, designated hitter Luis Juarez homers off Gigantes' reliever Wily Peralta.  After which, Cibaeñas erupts for another four runs.  With the bases loaded, second baseman  Jonathan Villa doubles home two runs, and shortstop Ramon Torres singles home another en route to a 7-2 lead.  Cibao's Kelvin Gutierrez again involves himself with a home run in the eighth.  Los Gigantes go down punching and kicking in the ninth with a one-out triple from shortstop Abiatal Avelino and a follow up double from Jose Siri, but nothing more.

Aguilas' starter Andy Otero exits after four innings to a no-decision, having allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Four relievers join together over the final five frames, yielding two runs on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.  Right-hander Luis Castillo, with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings pitched, earns the victory.  Southpaw Dario Alvarez earns the save.  Gigantes' reliever Wily Peralta, who faced just three batters, takes the loss.

BOXSCORE 1/17/21 - The LIDOM championship series is headed towards a decisive seventh game.  Los Aguilas again stave off elimination with their second straight victory to knot the series at three.  The two teams traded single runs in the first inning on runs batted in from designated hitter Juan Francisco for Cibao, and Melky Cabrera for Cibaeñas.  In the bottom of the fourth, Aguilas' center fielder Juan Lagares connects for a grand slam home run off Gigantes' reliever Jesus Reyes giving Cibeañas a 5-0 lead.  Los Aguilas' most important run comes in the sixth on another Juan Lagares run batted in.  That's because Los Gigantes mount a furious four-run rally in the ninth inning against Cibaeñas reliever Neftalí Feliz.  Center fielder Jose Siri hits a three-run home run, and first baseman Ronald Guzman followed with a solo shot.  But Los Gigantes fall a run short.  Feliz strikes out the final two batters of the game.  Game seven is scheduled for Monday evening at Estadio Julian Javier in San Francisco de Macorís.

After adhering to COVID protocol and receiving the necessary test results, Puerto Rico's Department of Health and LBPRC cleared the way for the resumption of the semifinal series between Los Indios de Mayaguez and Los Atenienses de Manati.  Mayaguez incurred an outbreak of positive tests on Jan. 2, resulting in the suspension of play after just one game won by Los Indios.  Los Atenienses was previously cleared to resume practice earlier this week, with Mayaguez's ongoing testing and results still pending.  Game two is tentatively scheduled for Sunday afternoon, followed by a single game on Monday and a doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday (Thursday and Friday, if necessary).  When the Atenienses take the field, they will be doing so with catcher Yadier Molina; LBPRC approved the lateral acquisition from Los Gigantes de Carolina.  Waiting for this series's conclusion is Los Criollos de Caguas, who has been keeping busy playing intramural games.  The league strives to have the championship series concluded by Jan. 27, three days before starting the Caribbean Series.

BOXSCORE 1/16/2021 - Los Aguilas stave off elimination with a late-innings comeback effort against Los Gigantes.  Cibao jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of back-to-back home runs from Ronald Guzman and Kelvin Gutierrez.  Undeterred, manager Felix Fermin leaves his starter, Carlos Martinez, in the game.  He goes on to pitch five scoreless innings, allowing a total of three runs on just four hits and two walks with five strikeouts through six total innings pitched.  Three Cibeañas bullpen members join to hold the Gigantes scoreless over the final three innings, yielding just two hits and fanning four.  Los Aguilas commence their comeback in the fifth with back-to-back home runs from shortstop Ramon Torres and center fielder Juan Lagares.  Ramon Torres's two-out hit in the seventh tied the game at three.  Afterwhich, Los Aguilas erupt for five runs in the eighth.  Right fielder Melky Cabrera kicks off the rally with an RBI single, and Ramon Torres drives in his third run of the game.  Melky Cabrera drives home Cibaeñas' ninth and final run in the ninth inning.  Los Gigantes now lead the series, three games to two.

BOXSCORE 1/15/2021 - Three games into the series, and the home team still holds sway.  After dropping two straight at Hermosillo, Los Sultanes won their first game back on home grounds.  Second baseman Alberto Carreon in the third inning singles in Monterrey's first run of the game.  Right fielder Paolo Orlando's two-run double in the fifth stakes Los Sultanes to a 3-0 lead.  But with one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth, Hermosillo center fielder Jose Cardona's three-run home run to left field ties the game at three.  Batting with one out and one on in the bottom half of the frame, left fielder Courtney Hawkins puts Monterrey right back on top with a two-run home run.  The bullpen shuts out Los Naranjeros over the final three innings to secure a 5-3 victory.

BOXSCORE 1/15/2021 - Los Yaquis de Obregon, after two innings, jump out to an early 4-0 lead.  First baseman Victor Mendoza highlights a big three-run first inning with a two-run home run against Culiacan starter JC Ramirez who would later surrender a second home run in the fifth to left fielder Leandro Castro.  Los Tomateros finally get on the board in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of doubles from center fielder Yoelkis Guibert and second baseman Ramiro Pena.  But Los Yaquis again extend their lead on left fielder Leandro Castro's home run in the fifth, giving Obregon a 5-1 advantage.  Obregon scores one more time in the sixth en route to a 5-2 final and their first victory of the series.

BOXSCORE 1/15/2021 - Cibao batters post five runs, and their pitching takes care of the rest.  Gigantes' starter Richelson Pena yields just three hits and two walks with three strikeouts through seven scoreless innings pitched for the victory.  Righty Jose Cisnero pitches a scoreless eighth, and Jumbo Diaz tosses a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout.  The trio of pitchers joins together in limiting Cibaeñas to just three hits and three walks.  Designated hitter Juan Francisco and left fielder Peter O'Brien each hit home runs, and catcher Carlos Paulino doubles home a run staking Los Gigantes to s 3-0 lead.  Center fielder Jose Siri then homers leading off the fifth, and a Peter O'Brien sac-fly plates Cibao's fifth and final run.  Los Gigantes del Cibao, founded in 1996, is now just one win away from clinching their fifth LIDOM championship.

BOXSCORE 1/15/2021  After dropping the opener, Los Navegantes are winners of two straight.  Seven Magallanes pitchers join in limiting Los Caribes to just one run on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Right-hander Anthony Vizcaya earns the victory in relief of starter Yohander Mendéz, and Jorge Rondon earns the save.  Right fielder Danry Vasquez goes 3 for 4 with a double, home run, and two runs batted in.  Third baseman Leonardo Reginatto and designated hitter Renato Núñes also homer for Los Navegantes.  Second baseman Ali Castillo drives in Anzoategui's lone run of the game.  Southpaw Liarvis Breto takes the loss.

BOXSCORE 1/15/2021  Lara scores early and often, but Aragua storms back and pulls away midway through a clearly escalating affair at Estadio Jose Perez Colmenares.  Sure enough, by the seventh, Aragua's bullpen begins to implode.  Los Cardenales score single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, then erupt for eleven runs in the ninth for an abrupt 18-10 lead and ultimate victory.  In this modern world of analytics, it's refreshing when nuance injects itself back into the game every so often.  Nineteen total pitchers saw action while batters grossed 84 official at-bats.  There were 31 hits and 29 runs scored, yet, not a single home run and just eight extra-base hits, with only sixteen total strikeouts ... how about that!  John "Juan" McGraw would have been proud.

BOXSCORE 1/13/2021  In a high scoring affair out at Estadio Jose Perez Colmenares, Los Caribes take the opening game of their semifinal series against Los Navegantes.  Anzoategui designated hitter Oswaldo Arcia hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and finishes the day 2 for 5 with six runs batted in.  Left fielder Willians Astudillo goes 3 for 4 with a double, three runs scored, and four runs batted in.  Magallanes designated hitter Renato Nuñez hit a three-run home run in the seventh and right fielder Danry Vasquez goes 3 for 5 with a double and two runs batted in.

BOXSCORE 1/13/2021  The defending LMP champions once again state their case, defeating number two seeded Obregon at Estadio de Los Yaquis.  Tomateros starter Edgar Arredondo limits Obregon to one run on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts through 6.1 innings pitched for the win.  First baseman Jesse Castillo leads the way for Culiacan going with a double and home run, with three runs batted in.  Catcher Alexis Wilson goes 2 for 3 with two runs batted in.  Yaquis first baseman Victor Mendoza ruins the shutout with a home run leading off the eighth inning.

BOXSCORE 1/13/2021 - Los Naranjeros outlast Los Sultanes in a pitcher's duel at Estadio Sonora.  Hermosillo starter César Vargas yields one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts through 5.2 innings pitched.  Sultanes starter Edgar González allowed just three hits and one walk with six strikeouts through six innings.  Both exit with no-decisions.  Monterrey breaks a scoreless tie in the sixth on third baseman Ricardo Serrano's home run to right.  Los Naranjeros tie the score in the eighth and snatch victory in the ninth on Niko Vasquez' game-winning run batted in.  Southpaw Heriberto Ruelas earns the victory in relief.

BOXSCORE 1/12/2021 - It appears as if Los Aguilas turns the tables from game one, taking their turn jumping out to a prompt 2-0 lead.  Facing Gigantes' starter Paolo Espino, shortstop  Jonathan Villar triples leading off the bottom of the first and scored on the double from center fielder Juan Lagares.  After Melky Cabrera advances the runners along, first baseman Rangel Ravelo singles home Lagares.  But Los Aguilas' lead does not last long.  Gigantes' first baseman Peter O'Brien plates Cibao's first run with a sac-fly, and second baseman Richard Ureña singles home the tying run in the top of the second.  In the third inning, first baseman Ronald Guzman plates the go-ahead run on a single hit back through the box.  Cibao continues pulling away in the sixth with an RBI double off the bat of Richard Uraña and two more runs in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Ronald Guzman and third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez.  Pablo Espino earns the win, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts through six innings pitched.  Aguilas' right-hander Yunesky Maya takes the loss.

BOXSCORE 1/12/2021 - The defending LMP champions Tomateros de Culiacan outpace the Yaquis de Obregon in the first game of their semifinal series.  Culiacan first baseman Jesse Castillo leads the charge going 2 for 4 with a double, home run, and four runs batted in.  Right fielder Sebastian Elizalde also goes 2 for 4 with a home run and two runs batted in.  Third baseman Michael Wing and center fielder Yoelkis Guibert each account for a run batted in apiece.  The heart of Obregon's lineup answers with seven runs.  Left fielder Leandro Castro is 3 for 5 at the plate with three runs batted in; first baseman Victor Mendoza doubles and drives in two runs; and right fielder Dariel Álvarez accounts for Los Yaquis final two runs batted in.  Both starting pitchers escape with no decisions.  Tomateros reliever Aldo Montes earns the victory, and Yaquis reliever Miguel Aguilar suffers the loss.
