BEFORE the BUMS 8/6/1890: Brooklyn Bridegrooms Win Seventh Straight; Take Opener From Beaneaters

From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

WASHINGTON PARK

Adonis Terry Leads Bridegrooms Over Beaneaters

The 1,972 fans present at Washington Park were treated to a thriller.  Hot on the Bridegroom's heels, the Boston Beaneaters arrived in Brooklyn just two games out of first place and wasted no time scoring against starter Adonis Terry in the opening frame.  But the Bridegrooms provided a swift response in the bottom half.  With the bases loaded, Terry helped himself by delivering home all runners with a triple to left/center, then scored on the play via an errant throw to complete the circuit.  Adonis Terry continued shining for the Bridegrooms, limiting the visitors to just one run over the next seven innings.  Brooklyn added an insurance run in the eighth; first baseman Dave Foutz knocked home Oyster Burns giving the Bridegrooms a 5-2 lead.  However, the patient visitors finally caught with Terry in the ninth, scoring three runs and tying the game at five.  Were it not for a splendid double-play turned by third baseman
George Pinkney to Foutz, the day's outcome certainly would have been altered.  In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and Oyster Burns poised at second, second baseman Hub Collins singled home the winning run.  Terry allowed five runs on ten hits for his eleventh win and drove in four runs at the plate.  Dave Foutz led the field with four hits and drove in two.  The victory was the local's seventh in a row - their third such streak this season.  Brooklyn's first-place standing was further bolstered with New York's win over the Phillies at Philadelphia.
  • FINAL: BOS 5; BKN 6
  • RECORD: 58-29 (.667); 1st place, 2.0 GA of Philadelphia Phillies
