In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born. While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club. The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day. Large Crowd Watches Phillies Topple Bridegrooms
A robust crowd of 4,146 persons welcomed back their Bridegrooms to Washington Park but were quickly disappointed. After some unrefined fielding demonstrated by both teams, the score stood 2-1 in Philadelphia's favor after two. But the Bridegrooms would creep no closer. The Phillies plated two in the third and two in the fifth before Brooklyn mustered a response with two runs in the home sixth. Phillies starter Kid Gleason would yield no more, holding the Bridegrooms to six hits and one walk for the victory. To the dismay of the remaining spectators, Philadelphia scored four more runs in the ninth inning, with shortstop Bob Allen's home run plating three. Ranging in center field this game, Dave Foutz effectively accounted for all Brooklyn's offense, doubling and scoring in the second and tripling home two runs in the sixth. Starter Bob Caruthers allowed ten runs on ten hits in a losing effort. With Saturday's series-opening victory, the Phillies pull within three games of the National League-leading Bridegrooms.
