BEFORE the BUMS 5/9/1890: Phillies Defeat Brooklyn Bridegrooms in Series Opener at Philadelphia

From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Bridegrooms Drop First National League Contest at Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Phillies reaffirmed their first-place standing with their sixth consecutive victory, the latest coming at the expense of the Bridegrooms.  Back in April, Brooklyn posted a one-sided 10-0 shutout victory against the Phillies at Washington Park.  Now making their first National League appearance in Philadelphia, the Bridegrooms were limited by young right-hander Kid Gleason to one run on five hits and held scoreless with one hit over the final seven frames.  Center fielder Pop Corkhill doubled and scored on Germany Smith's base hit in the second inning for Brooklyn's lone run.
First baseman Dave Foutz accounted for two of Brooklyn's hits.  Facing Bridegroom right-hander Bob Caruthers, the Phillies wielded 14 total hits and twice bunched a trio of runs in the third and sixth innings.  The outcome could have been far worse for Brooklyn were it not for stellar play by Corkhill in center and one diving catch in particular of a sinking liner off the bat of Kid Gleason.
  • FINAL: BKN 1; PHI 6
  • RECORD: 6-6 (.500); 4th place, 3.5 GB of Philadelphia Phillies
