BEFORE the BUMS 5/10/1890: Pop Corkhill Home Run Lifts Brooklyn Bridegrooms Over Philadelphia Phillies

From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS

In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Pop Corkhill Homerun Proves Decisive; Bridegrooms Even Series at Philadelphia

The Bridegrooms this afternoon brought Philadelphia's run of consecutive victories to an end.  Facing Phillies starter Tom Vickery in the opening frame, first baseman Dave Foutz tripled home a pair of runs, and shortstop Germany Smith delivered home another for a prompt 3-0 Bridegroom lead.  With two outs in the top of the third and a runner on first, Pop Corkhill squared up a Vickery offering that sailed at least twenty feet beyond the center field fence for a home run.  Philadelphia would recover two runs in the bottom half of the frame to make it a 5-2 Bridegroom advantage.  Tom Vickery aided his cause in the fourth with a line hit to center field, knocking in the Phillies' third run.  In the seventh, the teams traded single runs; right fielder Oyster Burns' two-bagger sent Hub Collins scurrying home, while the home team bunched together three hits.  Afterwhich, Bridegroom's starting pitcher Mickey Hughes kept the Phillies scoreless over the final two innings to secure Brooklyn's 6-4 victory.  Oyster Burns finished the day with four hits, including a double, and was kept busy in the field with six putouts.  The victory lifts Brooklyn a game back above par.
  • FINAL: BKN 6; PHI 4
  • RECORD: 7-6 (.538); 4th place, 2.5 GB of Philadelphia Phillies
