Ferry Hawks Ruffle Ducks' Feathers

Long Island seemingly picked up where they left off in game two, as first baseman Jose Sermo singled home a run to give the Ducks a prompt first-inning lead.  But the Ferry Hawks preyed upon five Long Island pitchers starting with Stephen Tarpley's offerings until knocking him out of the box in the sixth.  By then, it was already too late.  Staten Island erupted for four runs in the second, two in the third, and two more in the top half of the fifth before the Ducks mustered a response with four runs in the bottom half of the frame on Deibinson Romero's grand slam home run.  Afterwhich, the Flock was held scoreless through the ninth.  Meanwhile, Staten Island kept piling on with single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, then, for a grand finale, tallied three times in the ninth to cap off a 14-5 victory and take the series two games to one.

Ducks Rally After Rain Delay

Both starting pitchers walked off to no decisions.  In his second appearance with Staten Island since arriving from the Lancaster Barnstormers, left-hander Augie Sylk allowed one run on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.  Long Island right-hander Ryan Meisinger yielded one run on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.  

Left fielder Antoine Duplantis drove in the game's first run in the top of the fifth.  Catcher  Andres Noriega delivered home the Ferry Hawks' second run in the top of the sixth.  Duck first baseman Jose Sermo singled home a run in the bottom half of the frame.

Then came the rain ...

When play resumed, the Ducks rallied for three runs in the eighth.  Five-year major league veteran Tzu-Wei Lin singled home a run, and right fielder Phil Caulfield doubled home two giving Long Island a 3-2 lead and the final margin of victory.

Right-handed reliever Victor Capellan took the loss.  Long Island's Wladimir Pinto earned his first win as a Duck, and in the ninth, Tyler Webb struck out the side to earn his twelfth save.

Ferry Hawks and Mother Nature Strike Down Long Island Ducks

After sustaining consecutive losses to open the series, the Ferry Hawks tallied seven runs by the time Long Island mounted a response.  Not until the home fifth did Duck starter Bennett Parry retire Staten Island without yielding a run.  Leading off the bottom of the first, right fielder Antoine Duplantis doubled and scored.  The Ferry Hawks then pushed across two runs in the second, Dilson Herrera hit a two-run home run in the third, and designated hitter Joseph Monge singled home a pair in the fourth.  The Ducks finally got on the board in the fifth.  With the bases loaded, Staten Island starter Matt Solter walked Alejandro De Aza forcing in a run, and Dustin Woodcock scored on a fielder's choice.  In the top of the sixth, Jacson McGowan hit his first home run as a member of the Ducks, and shortstop Phil Caulfield doubled home a run making the score 7-4 in Staten Island's favor.  Matt Solter exited the game on the winning side upon allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings. 

• Then, the game was delayed by lightning in the bottom of the sixth.  Play resumed at 9:18 pm.

Once given the all-clear, the Ducks rallied for two runs in the top half of the seventh; Jacson McGowan and Joe DeCarlo scored, cutting the Ferry Hawks' lead to one.  But Staten Island answered right back with two runs at the frame's bottom.  Hits by Dilson Herrera and Ricardo Cespedes extended the Ferry Hawks' lead to three.  The teams traded runs in the eighth.  Afterwhich, right-hander Victor Capellan closed out the game with a scoreless ninth for his 13th save.  Staten Island salvages the series finale.  Matt Solter earns the win and Bennett Parry takes the loss.  BOXSCORE

Ferry Hawks Let Two Leads Get Away

Leading off the home first for Staten Island, right fielder Antoine Duplantis homered to right field.  But Long Island answered right back on catcher Carlos Castro's run-scoring double in the second.  The Ferry Hawks retook the lead on newly acquired Cristopher Cespedes' RBI single in the fourth.  After a scoreless fifth inning, Sam Travis scored on a Dustin Woodcock sac-fly, and catcher Joe DeCarlo drove in Deibinson Romero, giving the Ducks a 3-2 lead and the final margin of victory.  

Ferry Hawk starter and Bronx native Anthony Rodriguez surrendered three runs, but only two were earned, on seven hits and four walks in 5.2 innings for the loss.

Long Island native Joe Iorio limited Staten Island to a pair of runs on four hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts in seven innings for his seventh win against four losses.  In relief, left-hander Jose Jose tossed a scoreless eighth, and Tyler Webb closed out the ninth for his tenth save.

The Flock Announce Their Arrival With Authority

The Ducks created instant trouble for Ferry Hawk starter Francisco Carrillo who yielded five hits in the first inning, most notably a three-run home run by designated hitter Deibinson Romero.  Afterwhich, things settled down, and the score remained unchanged through the fourth.  

But Long Island stepped it up again in the fifth.  Left fielder Sam Travis doubled home 

Alejandro De Aza, first baseman Jacson McGowan doubled home Travis, and Francisco Carrillo was sent off to the showers.  With Eddy Reynoso pitching in relief, a sac-fly by Vladimir Frias plated the third run of the inning, giving the Ducks a 6-0 lead.  

A sac-fly off the bat of Antoine Duplantis in Staten Island's half of the fifth finally spoiled the shutout.  Making his 17th start for the Ducks, right-hander Scott Harkin exited on the winning side after allowing one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts through five innings pitched.   

Out of the Duck bullpen, Edubray Ramos threw a scoreless sixth, right-hander Sandy Baez twirled a scoreless seventh, and James Varela similarly handled the eighth.  

Deibinson Romero extended Long Island's lead on a wild pitch in the seventh. 

In the top of the ninth, Staten Island pitching wholly imploded.  Long Island sent eleven batters to the plate who erupted for another seven runs, highlighted by catcher Carlos Castro's two-run home run.  

James Varela completed his second scoreless inning in the home ninth to close out this lopsided victory.  Four Long Island pitchers joined to limit the Ferry Hawks to a pair of runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Long Island batters amassed 21 hits, with seven going for extra bases.  Shortstop Kevin Whatley was the lone Duck without a hit, while all other batters wielded no less than two hits each.

Ferry Hawks Take Second Straight 

Right-hander Matt Solter climbed the hill for Staten Island up against Cody Beckman for the Ducks.  Both turned in near mirror image performances but only one walked away with the win.

The Ferry Hawks scored first on designated hitter Justin O'Conner's RBI base hit in the fourth.  With two outs in the sixth, Long Island tied the game on a Sam Travis hit. 

Left fielder Antoine Duplantis doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh, and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 Ferry Hawk final margin of victory.

Staten Island center fielder Ricardo Cespedes finished 3 for 4 with a walk and run scored.

Starter Matt Solter earned the win, allowing one run on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts in sseven innings.  Right-hander Joe Kuzia pitched a scoreless eighth, and Victor Capellan closed out the ninth for his seventh save.

Cody Beckman allowed one run on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in a six-inning tough luck loss.  Boxscore

Native New Yorker Defeats Long Island in Game Two

The Ferry Hawks achieved a modicum of revenge on the heels of Monday's defeat to the Ducks.  

Left fielder Alejandro De Aza scored Long Island's lone run in the fourth on a double-play ball as Staten Island held the Ducks to just one run on seven hits to even the series at a game apiece.

Tuesday's pitching matchup featured Akeel Morris for Long Island against Anthony Rodriguez for Staten Island.  The native New Yorker held the Long Islanders to the lone run on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts for the win.  He improved to 3-4 with a still unsightly 6.44 ERA.  Morris yielded four earned runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings for the loss.

Two members of the Ferry Hawk bullpen allowed no hits over the final three innings to close out the win.  Right-hander Victor Capellan pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Second baseman Dilson Herrera doubled home two runs in the first.  Left fielder Antoine Duplantis 

singled home a run in the second, and designated hitter Mariel Bautista's sac-fly to right field delivered home Staten Island's fourth run of the game.

The series shifts back to Long Island for games three and four.

Ferry Hawks Get Their Feathers Ruffled By Flock

The Flock returned to the boroughs to resume their New York rivalry with the Ferry Hawks.

Long Island right-hander Scott Harkin and four bullpen members joined in hurling a gem.  Harkin faced 19 batters, throwing 65 pitches with an efficient 46 (70.7%) going for strikes.  He allowed no runs on four hits and one walk with a pair of strikeouts over five innings for the win.  Harkin improved to 5-6 with a lowered 3.75 ERA over 72.0 innings.  Four relievers limited the Ferry Hawks to four hits and no walks over the final four innings to preserve the shutout.

The Ducks scored four runs off Staten Island starter Dakota Freese, who struggled with control.  First baseman Sam Travis scored on a fielder's choice in the second.  Designated hitter Alejandro De Aza and Sam Travis singled and delivered home runs in the third.  In the fifth, Dakota Freese walked the bases loaded, and center fielder Rusney Castillo followed with a sac-fly to right field scoring Long Island's final run of the night.  Freese allowed four hits but walked six in a losing effort.  Boxscore

Ducks Take Rubber Game at Staten Island Ballpark

Staten Island grabbed an early lead, but the Long Island Ducks seized the day to win the rubber game at the Richmond County baseball grounds.

The Ferry Hawks tallied single runs in the second and third innings but only one was earned.  Long Island bunched together four runs in the top half of the fourth.  Afterwhich, the score remained unchanged over the final five innings of play.

Making his seventh start, Staten Island's Nick Carell allowed four runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts in five innings for the loss.  Four Ferry Hawk relievers joined in limiting the Ducks to four hits over four scoreless innings.

Duck starter Akeel Morris yielded two runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts for the win, and Nick Goody pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts for his fourth save.

Third baseman Joe DeCarlo finished 2 for 4 with a walk, double, triple, run batted in, and run scored.

Staten Island Evens Series With Long Island

After being shut out on Tuesday, left-handed Bronx native Anthony Rodriguez set Staten Island on a winning course in game two.  The Ferry Hawk starter kept Long Island scoreless on just two hits and one walk through the fifth inning.

Facing Duck right-hander Scott Harkin, the Ferry Hawks opened the scoring on designated hitter Joseph Reyes' double in the second.  Reyes then doubled home his second run of the game in the fourth.  In the fifth inning, Antoine Duplantis and Angel Aguilar each delivered home a run giving Staten Island a 4-0 lead.

Left fielder L.J. Mazzilli spoiled the shutout with a home run to left/center field, leading off the top of the sixth inning.  Reliever Sandy Baez then took over pitching duties for Long Island in the bottom of the sixth.

Right-hander Connor Law entered the game in the top of the seventh in relief of Anthony Rodriguez.  

Long Island's Chad Hockin entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and yielded a run-scoring double to Ricardo Cespedes, extending Staten Island's lead to four.

After a scoreless eighth, Staten Island's Victor Capellan closed out the ninth.  Anthony Rodriguez earned his second win of the season.  Scott Harkin took the loss.

Stephen Tarpley, Ducks Bullpen Outduel Ferry Hawks in Series Opener on Staten Island

The battle of the birds resumed at Richmond County grounds on Tuesday.  

Left-hander Stephen Tarpley climbed the hill for Long Island, and seven-year independent league veteran Dakota Freese started for the host Ferry Hawks.  Both pitchers held the opposition scoreless through the first four innings, each allowing just two hits, respectively.

The Ferry Hawks threatened in the fifth, but with runners on the corners and one out, catcher Bryan Gonzalez bounced into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

Long Island finally broke through in the sixth.  Recently acquired Phil Caulfield drew a one-out walk and soon scored on Alejandro De Aza's fielder's choice to second.

Staten Island threatened again in the home sixth with three consecutive singles to load the bases.  But with one out, Stephen Tarpley struck out center fielder Ricardo Cespedes for out number two, then fanned Dilson Herrera on five pitches to end the frame.

Ferry Hawk manager Edgardo Alfonzo handed the ball over to reliever Eddy Reynoso in the seventh.  

Starter Dakota Freese allowed one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings. 

The Ducks promptly put two runners on base on an E-5 and a hit-by-pitch.  Reynoso gathered himself and struck out Dustin Woodcock for out number two.  Shortstop Vladimir Frias popped out to Dilson Herrera in foul territory to end the threat.

Flock skipper Wally Backman summoned right-hander Nick Goody from the bullpen for the bottom of the seventh.  

Starter Stephen Tarpley allowed six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings pitched.  He faced 23 batters while throwing 90 pitches, with 57 (63.3%) going for strikes.

Alejandro De Aza was hit with a pitch in the eighth and left the game.  It was the second batter hit by Eddy Reynoso.  It gave the Ducks runners on first and second with no outs.  With Sam Travis at the plate, L.J. Mazzilli got thrown out at third on the front end of an attempted double steal.  Travis then bounced back to the pitcher.

Southpaw Tyler Webb entered the game in the bottom of the eighth in relief of Nick Goody.

Right-hander Joe Kuzia pitched a scoreless top half of the ninth for Staten Island.

Former Arizona Diamondback farmhand Kai-Wei Lin was tasked by Wally Backman with closing out the ninth, and he did not disappoint, retiring the side in order and striking out the last man looking.

Three Staten Island pitchers limited the Ducks to just three hits.  Dakota Freese took the loss.  

Stephen Tarpley improves to 3-3 with a 2.75 ERA.

The Ducks and Ferry Hawks have now played ten games this season, with Long Island winning seven and Staten Island three.  However, the teams are even at 3-3 over their last six meetings.

Ducks Complete Three-Game Sweep of Ferry Hawks

The Ducks jumped out to an early lead.  Designated hitter Johnni Turbo led off the home first with a single and stole second base.  A single by right fielder Dustin Woodcock put runners at the corners.  Left fielder L.J. Mazzilli reached safely on an E-5, and Turbo scored on the play.

Long Island added a run in the third.  L.J. Mazzilli led off with a hit through the middle, and Deibinson Romero singled to left field putting runners at the corners.  Romero then scored on a Sam Travis 

sacrifice-fly to left.  The Ducks' rally ended abruptly when Alejandro De Aza bounced into a 4-6-3 double-play.

In the fourth, Long Island wielded four hits, two for extra bases, and drew two walks as part of a four-run inning and a 6-0 lead.  Staten Island right-hander and losing pitcher Alex Vargas got knocked out of the box, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks in 3.2 innings pitched.  The Ferry Hawk bullpen then threw 4.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts.

Ferry Hawk left fielder Ben Ruta doubled and scored in the sixth and right fielder Rymer Liriano 

connected on a two-run home run in the ninth.

Flock Stages Stunning Comeback at The Pond

The Ferry Hawks appeared well on their way toward tying the series out on Long Island.  They broke out with three runs in the first inning against Ducks starter Stephen Tarpley, who would fail to pitch out of the third.  After allowing three runs on three hits and one walk in just 2.1 innings pitched, he was relieved.  

Right-hander Hunter Claudelle likewise allowed three runs on three hits and four walks in relief of Tarpley, and the Ferry Hawks led 6-0 through three and a half innings of play. 

But Staten Island would soon regret leaving the bases loaded in the top of the fourth.  

Long Island stunningly rallied for ten runs in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by Johnni Turbo's three-run home run giving Long Island a 7-6 lead and another three-run home run off the bat of Sam Travis, making it a 10-6 game.

Staten Island recovered a single run in the fifth and added two more in the seventh but ultimately finished a run short.

Second-year Duck Dylan Peiffer earned the win with 1.1 innings pitched, and Tyler Webb pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.  

Ferry Hawk starter and Bronx native Anthony Rodriguez allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks in 3.0 innings pitched but escaped with a no-decision.  Right-hander Eddy Reynoso 

yielded both Long Island home runs and got tagged with the loss.

First Meeting is a Classic; Ducks Outlast Ferry Hawks in Old-Fashioned Pitcher's Duel

A rivalry is born.  Tuesday, May 17, marked the first-ever game between New York's two independents, the Long Island Ducks and the expansion Staten Island Ferry Hawks.  

Mets fans are very familiar with the respective team managers.  Both are all-time favorites.  Second baseman for the 1986 champs, Wally Backman, is entering his fourth season as skipper of the Ducks.  Representing the 2000 N.L. champions, Edgardo Alfonzo was named the first manager in Ferry Hawks history.

The two Atlantic League teams inaugurated their rivalry with an old-fashioned pitcher's duel.  

Entering his third season with the Ducks, Brooklyn native Anderson DeLeon held the Ferry Hawks scoreless on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts through five innings pitched.  Southpaw Brady Feigl threw a scoreless sixth inning in relief of DeLeon.  Left-hander Cody Beckman entered the game in relief of Brady Feigl and tossed a scoreless top half of the seventh.

Staten Island right-hander Matt Solten yielded no runs on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts over his first six innings.  The Ducks loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth but left all runners stranded.  Long Island threatened again in the seventh, but Matt Solden induced shortstop Devin Marrero into an inning-ending 1-4-3 double play.

Wally Backman summoned Joe Iorio to pitch the top of the eighth and was rewarded with another scoreless frame.

Edgardo Alfonzo likewise turned to his bullpen, calling upon southpaw Chris Nunn in the bottom half of the eighth.

Second baseman Vladimir Frias led off with a bloop single to shallow right field.  Center fielder 

Alejandro De Aza advanced the runner.  First baseman Sam Travis reached safely on a strikeout/wild pitch, and Frias advanced to third.  Chris Nunn then walked Deibinson Romero to load the bases.  Designated hitter Rusney Castillo struck out looking.  With two outs, L.J. Mazzilli drew a base on balls to break the scoreless tie.

Long Island left-hander Tyler Webb was tasked with pitching the ninth and did not disappoint.  Staten Island put the tying run on second base but advanced no farther.

Staten Island Ferry Hawks Make Atlantic League Debut at Charleston, West Virginia

Staten Island Ferry Hawks  vs.  Charleston Dirty Birds  

The first-ever professional baseball game played by the Staten Island Ferry Hawks (...to borrow a phrase) is in the books.  

The Richmond County nine opened the season at Charleston, West Virginia, against the Dirty Birds and will make their home debut on Tuesday, May 3, against the Lexington Legends.

Recently acquired Julio Teheran opened the season for Staten Island but walked off to a no-decision.  He faced 17 batters, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts through four innings pitched.

After falling behind 2-0 in the fourth inning, the Ferry Hawks mounted their first-ever rally.  First baseman Kacy Clemens led off the top of the fifth with a home run to right field, and with two outs and a runner on first, New York City native and former Mets prospect, Ricardo Cespedes homered to give Staten Island a 3-2 lead.

But it would not last.  Charleston scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings that went unanswered by the Ferry Hawks.
