In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born.  While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club.  The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut.  Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Bridegrooms Settle for Series Split at Philadelphia

In seizing Tuesday's series finale, the Phillies salvaged a split against the Bridegrooms and did so convincingly.  Right-hander Mickey Hughes started for Brooklyn but was knocked out of the box by the sixth.  Southpaw Lady Baldwin entered in relief and was treated similarly.  The Bridegrooms took a brief 2-1 lead in the top half of the second.  But the Phillies answered with single runs in the home second and third and four runs in the fourth.  Not yet done, manager Harry Wright's Colts posted three more runs in the sixth.  Afterwhich, the teams traded single runs in the eighth for an 11-3 final score.  Philadelphia starter Kid Gleason gained a measure of revenge for Monday's onslaught, allowing ten widely scattered hits, keeping Brooklyn scoreless from the third through the seventh innings, and leaving the bases filled with Bridegrooms to end the ninth.

Brooklyn Bridegrooms vs. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Entering this game, Brooklyn was the only opponent this season to score double-digit runs against the Phillies, and this afternoon they repeated the feat.  Easily the Phillies' worst loss to date, a crowd of 2,224 watched in dismay as the Bridegrooms punished the offerings of Philadelphia's Kid Gleason, Dave Anderson, and Bill Day to all parts of the field for 13 hits and 17 runs.  Brooklyn bunched together seven runs in the second inning.  Undaunted, Philadelphia embarked on their comeback bid against Bridegroom starter Lady Baldwin with four runs in the third and another in the fourth.  In the fifth inning, manager McGunnigle brought in Tom Lovett, who yielded two runs in the sixth, which tied the game at seven.  But after a scoreless seventh inning, the Bridegrooms erupted for nine runs in the visitor's half of the eighth, then, for good measure, scored one last run in the ninth.  Catcher Tom Daly led the charge with three hits and was one of five Brooklyn batters wielding multiple hits.
