It's Groundhog Day at Wappingers Falls

The Brooklyn Cyclones have now lost 66 games this season.  I've covered every single one.  So, I know, and dread going back and checking to see just how many times this season the Cyclones have been limited to four hits or less.  I've made it a point of contention throughout.

On Saturday, they escaped my rage by wielding their fifth hit in the ninth inning.

Thank you, Cody Bohanek.

Hudson Valley's Josh Maciejewski hurls a gem, allowing four hits and no walks with eleven strikeouts over seven innings pitched for the win.  Right-hander Freicer Perez yields one hit over two scoreless innings to complete the shutout.

Brooklyn manages to put only one runner into scoring position.  They draw no walks and strike out 13 times.  Catcher Francisco Alvarez, Wilmer Reyes, Luis Gonzalez, and Zack Ashford account for Brooklyn's four other hits, none for extra bases.

After two impressive starts, right-hander Jose Chacin suffers his first loss as a Cyclone.  He allows five runs on three hits, including two home runs in the third and three walks with eight strikeouts through five innings.  In relief of Chacin, Luis Montas yields a run over two innings pitched, and Evy Ruibal 

surrenders a home run in the eighth.

Look What The Renegades Did To The Cyclones ... Again!

Hudson Valley brings Brooklyn's three-game win streak to a skidding halt.  In yet another instance among so many this season, the Cyclones are limited to four hits (or less) en route to a 4-1 defeat at Wappingers Falls. 

First baseman Luke Ritter with one out in the fourth, homers off Renegade starter Anderson Munoz

cutting Brooklyn's deficit to three.  But the Cyclones would score no more.  Designated hitter Francisco Alvarez accounts for half of Brooklyn's four hits, including a double and Luis Gonzalez doubles.

Making his fifth start for Brooklyn, right-hander Oscar Rojas allows four runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks in suffering his third loss.  Pitching in relief of Rojas, Nolan Clenney yields two hits and strikes out three over 2.1 scoreless innings.

Brooklyn batters draw three walks, strike out 13 times, and go 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Brooklyn Cyclones Suffer Familiar Fate in Series Opener at Hudson Valley

Game Gets Away From Cyclones in the Sixth

Brooklyn got off to a rousing start on Luis Gonzalez's second-inning grand slam home run.  But after keeping HudsonValley off the board through the first four innings, starter David Griffin surrenders a three-run home run off the bat of center fielder Everson Pereira, cutting Brooklyn's lead to one.  

Griffin exits on the winning side of a 3-2 game after allowing five hits and one walk with five strikeouts through five innings.  With Luis Montas pitching the sixth in relief of Griffin, the Renegades muster four runs on five hits, with two going for extra bases for an abrupt 7-3 lead.

Shortstop Ronny Mauricio hits a two-run home run in the eighth, but it's not enough.

David Griffin is reduced to a no-decision, while Luis Montas takes the loss.  Right-hander Nolan Clenney closes out the game with two scoreless innings.  

Meanwhile, three Hudson Valley Renagade pitchers join together in limiting the Cyclones to a mere four hits, albeit two went for home runs and just two walks with 13 strikeouts for the joint effort victory.  Right-hander Matt Sauer earns the win, and Derek Craft the save.

The Hudson Valley Renegades now own a lopsided 21-9 record against the Brooklyn Cyclones by taking Tuesday's series opener.

Four Baggers and Stellar Pitching Propel Brooklyn Cyclones to Series Win Against Wilmington Blue Rocks

Francisco Alvarez and Ronny Mauricio Remain Neck and Neck in the Great Steeplechase Grounds Home Run Derby ... or are they?  

Batting in the first, Jaylen Palmer singles through the left side, and with two outs, Francisco Alvarez

homers over the left field wall, giving Brooklyn a prompt 2-0 lead.  

Starter Jose Chacin and the bullpen make it stand.  

Not yet done, Ronny Mauricio slams a three-run home run in the seventh, and Luis Gonzalez doubles home Luke Ritter in the eighth for a 6-1 final score.

Making his second start for Brooklyn, Jose Chacin allows five hits and two walks with four strikeouts through six scoreless innings for the win.  Through 11.2 innings with the Cyclones, he has allowed one run on seven hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. 

Right-hander Willy Taveras follows Chacin with two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.  However, Ronny Mauricio's throwing error in the ninth leads to a Wilmington run, spoiling the shutout.  Otherwise, Bryce Montes de Oca closes the game and secures Brooklyn's series win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Francisco Alvarez and Ronny Mauricio remain tied for the team lead with 18 home runs in the great Steeplechase grounds home run chase.  Alvarez has 245 at-bats in 74 games this season as a member of the Cyclones.  He also hit two home runs before his promotion from St. Lucie.  Ronny Mauricio now has 381 at-bats through 97 games (23 more games than Alvarez).  The numbers speak for themselves.

Three Wilmington Pitchers Join for Three-Hit Shutout Victory; Series Tied at Two 

After two scoreless innings, Wilmington erupts for four runs on five hits, with two going for extra bases.  Brooklyn starter Luc Rennie yields all four runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts through 2.1 innings pitched.  Hunter Parsons, Michel Otanez, and Brian Metoyer hold the Blue Rocks to just one hit and no walks, with ten strikeouts, but their efforts go for naught out of the bullpen.  Led by Wilmington starter Cole Henry, the Blue Rocks limit the Cyclones to three hits and five walks in a combined shutout effort.  Right fielder Jaylen Palmer, Zack Ashford, and Luis Gonzalez account for Brooklyn's only hits.  The Cyclones draw five walks but again strikeout in double-digits (ten) and bat 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.  Second baseman Luke Ritter fans three times and leaves five runners on base.  With the win, Wilmington draws even with the Cyclones; the series finale is scheduled for Sunday.  BOXSCORE

Brooklyn's Alec Kisena Finally Earns Well Deserved Win; Cyclones Take Series Lead Against Wilmington

ALEC KISENA WINS FIRST DECISION SINCE MAY 8; FRANCISCO ALVAREZ HITS HOME RUN NUMBER EIGHTEEN

What the Cyclones failed to achieve on Thursday, they more than make up for in Friday's game. 

Starting for Wilmington, southpaw Mitchell Parker is opposed by Alec Kisena for Brooklyn.  

After two scoreless innings, the Cyclones strike for five runs in the third.  In consecutive at-bats, Antoine Duplantis, Jaylen Palmer, Ronny Mauricio, Francisco Alvarez, and Jose Peroza each drive in runs.  Mitchell Parker is naturally dispatched to the showers and replaced with left-hander Alfonso Hernandez who holds Brooklyn scoreless over the next 2.2 innings.  

Meanwhile, Alec Kisena yields his first and only run in the visitor's fourth.  After six innings pitched, he departs on the winning side, having yielded three hits with three strikeouts.  Brooklyn then erupts for another five runs in the bottom half of the sixth.  Francisco Alvarez ignites the rally with a leadoff home run.  Second baseman Luis Gonzalez joins the fray with two runs batted in.  After which, Duplantis and Palmer drive home their second runs of the game, respectively, giving the Surf Avenue sluggers a 10-3 lead.

Right-hander Colby Morris pitches a scoreless seventh and eighth, and Evi Ruibal, in a non-save situation, twirls a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.  The beleaguered Alec Kisena wins only his second decision for the Cyclones against nine losses with a reduced 4.74 ERA.  His first win came back in his first start of the season on May 8 against Asheville.  So, congratulations to him ...  

The Coney Island trio limits the Blue Rocks to one run on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

While the Cyclones draw only four walks and strike out twelve times, they achieve double-digit hits and bat 7 for 11 with runners in scoring position.  Antoine Duplantis leads with three hits.

Through 72 games and 238 at-bats as a member of the Cyclones, Francisco Alvarez now has 17 home runs and 52 RBI along with an above .500 slugging average.  Including fifteen games at Port St. Lucie, Alvarez has 18 home runs and 64 RBI through 87 games and 286 total at-bats.  BOXSCORE

Three Wilmington Pitchers Join Together For One-Hit Shutout Over Brooklyn Cyclones

No, this was not a deja vu; it really happened.  In one of several instances this season, the Brooklyn Cyclones were yet again one-hit by the opposition, this time via the arms of three Wilmington pitchers.

Starting for the Blue Rocks, southpaw Evan Lee pitches the first six innings.  He retires Brooklyn in order during the first and second innings.  Left fielder Zack Ashford singles leading off the third but is quickly erased when Nic Gaddis grounds into a 5-4-3 double-play.  Evan Lee again retires Brooklyn in order during the fourth and fifth innings.  The Cyclones draw their first base on balls in the sixth but nothing more.  

Brooklyn starter J.T. Ginn throws five scoreless innings, then yields a leadoff double and a two-out run-scoring single in the sixth.  Thus, Evan Leee exits on the winning side of a one-run affair.  His counterpart J.T. Ginn allows the one run on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout over 5.2 innings.

 Josh Hejka secures the final out in the sixth, then tosses a scoreless seventh.

Facing Todd Peterson, the Cyclones go down in order in the seventh, and in the eighth, Luis Gonzalez

reaches safely on a strikeout that gets away but is stranded in place.  In the ninth inning, reliever Zach Brzykcy issues only the Blue Rocks' second walk.  Otherwise, the Cyclones go down quietly into the night.

The So-Called Surf Avenue Sluggers: one hit, two walks, four baserunners, twelve strikeouts.

Hitting aside, Coney Island's bullpen could not pick up where J.T. Ginn and Josh Hejka left off.  Making his first appearance with the Cyclones, Luis Montas allows two runs on three hits in the eighth, and in the ninth, Bryce Montes de Oca surrenders three more runs on three hits giving the Wilmington Blue Rocks a 6-0 victory over Brooklyn.

Cyclone Bullpen and the Surf Ave Sluggers Provide Jose Chacin All The Support Needed For His First Victory at Coney Island 

Making his first start for the Brooklyn Cyclones, Port St. Lucie Mets graduate Jose Chacin makes a fine first impression before the Coney Island crowd.  After hurling five scoreless innings, he yields a run in the sixth.  All told, Chacin allowed an earned run on just two hits and one walk with five strikeouts through 5.2 innings pitched.  

Enter Josh Hejka who closes out the sixth and throws a scoreless seventh.  Afterwhich, the bullpen hits a bump in the road when Evy Ruibal faces four batters, allows a hit, and walks two before smartly being removed in favor of big Bryce Montes de Oca who closes out the eighth, then hurls a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the victory and earn his sixth save.  Jose Chacin earns the win.

The Cyclones score four runs on seven hits and seven walks with only five strikeouts.  Aberdeen right-hander Connor Loeprich takes the loss.  Second baseman Luis Gonzalez is the big man on campus going 4 for 4 with a home run, his fifth.  Third baseman Jose Peroza and Ronny Mauricio also drive in runs for Brooklyn, and back in the second Luis Gonzalez doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

The Surf Avenue Sluggers now own a 4-2 advantage in the series with the finale slated for Sunday.

Brooklyn Cyclones Overcome Early Deficits, Rally Late; Bullpen Handles the Rest in Victory Over Aberdeen Ironbirds

Brooklyn Bullpen Puts Aberdeen On Hold; Luis Gonzalez Drives Home Decisive Runs in Eighth

Aberdeen holds the early advantage.  Making his sixth start for the Cyclones, right-hander Luc Rennie surrenders two hits and issued two walks in the first inning as the Ironbirds jump out to a prompt 2-0 led.  

Second baseman Luke Ritter drives home one run in the bottom half of the first, third baseman Luis Gonzalez singles and scores the tying run in the second, and in the fourth, Cody Bohanek doubles and scored on Antoine Duplantis' line single to right field, giving Brooklyn a 3-2 lead.

With Luc Rennie pitching in the fifth, Aberdeen retakes the lead with another pair of runs.  The score then remains unchanged through the seventh.  Right-hander Brian Metoyer twirls two fine innings in relief of Rennie, allowing just a hit and striking out two.  The Cyclones then breakthrough for three runs in the bottom of the eighth; Luis Gonzalez drives home two runs and soon scores on a throwing error by Aberdeen pitcher Ignacio Feliz for a 6-4 Cyclone lead and the final margin of victory.

Brian Metoyer's fine effort earns him the victory.  Right-hander Willy Taveras strikes out three batters to close out the ninth for his third save this season.  Luc Rennie escapes with a no-decision, and Ignacio Feliz takes the loss.

The Cyclones bat 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position; they strike out 12 times and draw just three walks.  Of their nine hits, only one goes for extra bases.  The good news is with the victory the Cyclones take a 3-2 series lead over Aberdeen.  BOXSCORE

Brooklyn Cyclones Split Twin Bill at Jersey Shore

Back on the field after Thursday's rainout, the Cyclones and Blue Claws on Friday evening played two at Jersey Shore.

GAME ONE - Making his tenth start for Brooklyn, right-hander Justin Lasko yields five hits (all singles) and three walks with seven strikeouts over 5.2 scoreless innings pitched for the win.  He faces 23 batters while throwing 95 pitches, with 54 (56.8%) going for strikes.  Right-hander Bryce Montes de Oca continues with 1.1 scoreless innings to complete the shutout.  He allows just one hit and strikes out three to earn his fourth save.  Catcher Francisco Alvarez doubles in the fourth and scores on Zach Ashford's base hit.  In the fifth, LT Struble draws a leadoff walk and eventually scores on a ground ball double-play.  Afterwhich,  Ronny Mauricio connects for his 14th home run this season.  LT Struble again leads off the seventh with a walk, steals second, and scores giving the Cyclones a 4-0 final margin of victory, their eighth in their last nine games. 

GAME TWO - Making only his second start for Brooklyn, 22-year old J.T. Ginn toes the slab and is opposed by Ethan Lindow for the Blue Claws.  Right fielder Jhailyn Ortiz opens the scoring when he tags up from third on a sacrifice fly in the second.  Shortstop Jonathan Guzman leads off the third with a double and scores, and catcher Vito Friscia drives home another giving the Blue Claws a 3-1 lead after the third.  Ethan Lindow sets down Brooklyn in order in the fifth while limiting them to just two hits.  J.T. Ginn also negotiates a scoreless fifth, inducing an inning-ending 5-4-3 double-play.  With only six outs left in the contest, the Cyclones manage just two hits in the ninth, which go for naught when Luis Gonzalez bounces into a rally-killing 5-4-3 double-play.  J.T. Ginn takes the loss upon yielding three runs (two earned) on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Ethan Lindow goes the distance, allowing just four hits and no walks with seven strikeouts for the win.

Brooklyn Cyclones Complete Series Sweep Over Wilmington Blue Rocks

Boardwalk Bums Extend Winning Streak to Season-High Six Games

Brooklyn kicks off Sunday afternoon's series finale with a four-run first inning.  Center fielder Antoine Duplantis, who remains hot as the sun, triples leading off the game and scores on Edgardo Fermin's ground-rule double over the left field wall.  Back behind the plate, Francisco Alvarez doubles home Fermin.  The hit parade continues with Jeremy Vasquez driving home Alvarez.  Vasquez then scores the Cyclone's fourth run on a throwing error by the Blue Rock first baseman.

Wilmington begins immediately chipping away at Brooklyn's lead.  Facing starter Luc Rennie, the Blue Rocks score single runs in the second and fourth innings highlighted by left fielder Jeremy Ydens' home run.  Luc Rennie departs the game after four on the winning side of a 4-2 game.  Wilmington picks up their third run in the fifth against reliever Joe Cavallaro, then ties the game at four against Colby Morris in the seventh.

Cyclone right-hander Willy Tavaras pitches a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.  Edgardo Fermin leading off the bottom of the frame, draws a walk.  With one out, he steals second base, then advances to third on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Jeremy Vasquez is issued an intentional walk putting runners on the corners.  Second baseman Luis Gonzalez then seizes the role of hero with the game-winning base hit through the left side, scoring Fermin from third.  Willy Tavaras earns the win.

Accounting for half of Brooklyn's hits, Luis Gonzalez goes 3 for 5, and Antoine Duplantis likewise goes 3 for 5 with a double and triple.  Francisco Alvarez now has 27 RBI in 45 games with Brooklyn.

The Cyclones complete their first series sweep this season and extend their season-high winning streak to six.

Evy Ruibal Puts Out The Fire; Cyclones Win Streak Hits Four

The Boardwalk Bums build an early four-run lead through five.  

First baseman Jeremy Vasquez doubles leading off the second and scored on a two-out double by Luis Gonzalez, who then crosses the plate on Jose Mena's grounder to third (and subsequent botched throw to first base).  In the third, Jeremy Vasquez drives home his second run, and in the fourth, Joe Suozzi 

doubles home Brooklyn's fourth run.

Wilmington gets on the board with a pair of doubles in the sixth, which knock starter J.T. Ginn from the game.  Facing Connor O'Neil in the seventh, Wilmington's first baseman Omar Meregildo connects on a two-run home run, making it a 4-3 game.

Brooklyn plates the game's decisive run in the eighth.  Luis Gonzalez drives home his second of the game, and it's a good thing too.  

Because in the ninth inning, Cyclone reliever Michel Otanez walks the first three batters to load the bases inspiring Manager Blankmeyer into making a pitching change summoning Evy Ruibal to extinguish the fire.  A flyball to center field scores the runner from third, pulling the Blue Rocks within one.  However, Evy Ruibal strikes out the next batter and gets the game's last out on a pop-foul to third base, thus preserving the victory and earning his first save this season.

J.T. Ginn wins his first game as a member of the Cyclones.  He allows just one run on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts through 5.2 innings in his Brooklyn debut.

The Cyclones win their fourth straight against Wilmington, their longest winning streak this season to date.

Four Home Runs Power Brooklyn Over Hudson Valley; Antoine Duplantis Hits Two

My sarcasm aside, Brooklyn eliminates any chance of a no-hitter and shutout when, with one out in the top of the first, Antoine Duplantis homers to right field against Renegade starter Shawn Semple.  Hudson Valley likewise ruins Alec Kisena's bid for a no-hitter with a base hit in the bottom half of the frame.

Playing in place of injured Luke Ritter, second baseman Luis Gonzalez homers in the second.  Hudson Valley gets one back in the bottom half of the frame.  But then, with two outs in the third, Antoine Duplantis hits his second home run of the game giving the Cyclones a 3-1 lead.

Manager Blankmeyer, perhaps making a proactive change, brings in Josh Hejka in the fifth.  Alec Kisena allows just one run on one hit and five walks, and five strikeouts through four innings pitched.

In the seventh, Adrian Hernandez drives home, Luis Gonzalez, for a 4-1 Brooklyn lead.

Hejka completes his third scoreless inning with a ten-pitch at-bat against second baseman Oliver Dunn. 

Leading off the eighth, first baseman Jeremy Vasquez gives Brooklyn a 5-1 lead with his third home run this season.  Afterwhich, Brooklyn erupts for five more runs.  Catcher Juan Uriarte singles home a run, Antoine Duplantis walks with the bases loaded, Ronny Mauricio is hit by a pitch forcing home another, and Jeremy Vasquez drives home two giving Brooklyn a 10-1 lead.  That is until the Renegades post two runs in the bottom of the eighth against right-hander Evy Ruibal.

Mitch Ragan closes out the game with a scoreless ninth.  Brooklyn pitchers limit the Renegades to four hits, while Josh Hejka earns a well-deserved win.

BOX GAME ONE - Brooklyn trails 4-0 after the first, then 5-0 through the fifth inning.  The Cyclones tallied their lone run of the game on Luis Gonzalez's home run in the sixth to ruin the shutout.  Hudson Valley scores twice more in the bottom half of the frame en route to a commanding 7-1 victory in game one.  Two Renegades pitchers join together in limiting the Cyclones to just three hits and two walks with ten strikeouts.  Right-hander Mitch Spencer earns the win.  Brooklyn starter Connor Grey surrenders five runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts.  He yields one home run back in Hudson's four-run first.  Shortstop Ronnie Mauricio and Jeremy Vasquez account for Coney Island's only other hits.

BOX GAME TWO - Twenty-six Brooklyn Cyclones step up to the plate.  Five batters draw walks, six different batters strikeout, two of them twice, and not one of them wields a single hit.  Renegades starter Sean Boyle twirls four no-hit/no-run innings, Nick Ernst throws two hitless innings to earn the win in relief of Boyle, and Derek Craft closes out the game with a hitless seventh inning.  Meanwhile, starter Justin Lasko yields five earned runs, including three home runs, five total hits, one walks with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched for the loss.  Southpaw Andrew Edwards records the last two outs of the game.

Brooklyn Cyclones Fizzle Out on July Fourth at Aberdeen

Brooklyn plays like they ate too many hot dogs ... 

Second baseman Luke Ritter in the second inning launches his tenth home run this season, and Joe Genord, on a fielder's choice, drives home the Cyclones' second run in the fifth, and that's that.  Brooklyn is limited to just four hits, no walks, and strike out seven times.  Luis Gonzalez, still starting at short in place of Ronny Mauricio, and right fielder Blake Ashford account for the Cyclones only other hits.

Luke Ritter leads Brooklyn in home runs and is now tied with Brett Baty for the team lead with 32 runs batted in.

Starter Alec Kisena entered the game with a troublesome 1.410 WHiP and 4.3 W/9 average.  In a losing effort, allows six earned runs on five hits (including a home run in the third) and three walks with eight strikeouts over 4.2 innings pitched for his fifth defeat against one win with an unsightly 5.86 ERA. 

Conner O'Neil accounts for himself in relief of Kisena with two strikeouts in 1.2 scoreless innings, but Michel Otanez allows a run and walks three in two innings pitched.

The Cyclones lose five of seven to Aberdeen and fall to 18-34 (.346) for the season.

Starters Cam Opp for Brooklyn and Drew Rom for Aberdeen engage in a scoreless duel through the third.  Aberdeen then opens the scoring in the fourth.  Two hits, a passed ball, and a Cyclone error by third baseman Luis Gonzalez result in a 2-0 Ironbird lead.

Rom pitches through the sixth, allowing no runs on just four hits with six strikeouts.  Meanwhile, Cam Opp is removed after the fifth but not before yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.  He faces 20 batters and throws 81 pitches, with 55 (67.9%) going for strikes.  

Michel Otanez enters the game in the sixth, and with two outs, down came the rain.

The game is then declared official.

Antoine Duplantis accounts for two of Brooklyn's four hits.  Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez are responsible for the others.
