BROOKLYN CYCLONES:  Brooks Invade Staten Island and Pound Yankees 12-5;  Force Deciding Game Three.


Veni; Vidi; Vici...;  OH!  Fugheddaboubit!


It's going to be HAVOC in the HARBOR.  Both teams have now lost a game at home.


The Seaside Sluggers travelled across the Verrazano Bridge Friday afternoon with bats in hand, and proceeded to smash-up any plans the Yankees had of sweeping Brooklyn in two games.   This series is now tied.   And The Battle of the Boroughs will culminate Saturday in a most appropriate, do-or-die, NYC showdown.


At stake tomorrow is a chance to play for the NYPL Championship; local bragging rights; and Borough Pride.  The season ending; playoff elimination; loser-go-home in shame; contest will be played at the Ballpark at St. George in Staten Island.


In Game One on Thursday, the Cyclones could only manage two hits off Yankee pitching.  In Game Two, the Cyclones found Yankee pitching very hittable as Brooklyn's bats lit-up the Staten Island scoreboard with sixteen hits and twelve runs scored.


Brooklyn's Brian Harrison; Richard Lucas; Charlie Thurber; and Cole Frenzel were more power than Staten Island could handle.  Midway through, a two-run home run by Charlie Thurber kept the Yankees at bay, and a late two-run home run by Richard Lucas put them away...for good.  The two combined to go 6 for 10; seven runs scored; 2 home runs; and four RBI.


Brian Harrison jolted the Yankees all afternoon; going 4 for 5 on the day; with two doubles and three RBI.  Cole Frenzel; who did not start in game one against a lefty; drove in two more of Brooklyn's twelve runs.


After two innings played, the Yankees led this game 2-1.  But once the Cyclones pulled ahead, they stayed ahead; then turned on the power.  However, Staten Island pounded out thirteen hits of their own.  And both teams were guilty of sloppy play totalling five errors between them.


On the hill, Brooklyn's bullpen literally saved the day.  Cyclone starter; Jeffery Walters; got roughed up.  In 4.2 innings of work, he allowed eight hits and got charged with five runs/four earned.  But Rafael Montero; Tyler Pill; and Jeremy Gould; combined to keep Staten Island scoreless over the final 4.2 innings.  Montero earned the Win.  Pill is credited with a Hold.

BKN CYCLONES ~ No Hits; No Wins; No Dice In Hudson Valley

BROOKLYN CYCLONES:  The Baby Bums Get No-Hit; Kinda. 

Hudson Valley pitcher allows no hits before yielding to bullpen in seventh inning.

The bus trip outside the city limits has been a harrowing one for the Coney Island Nine.  Thursday night up in Peekskill, N.Y., The Hudson Valley Renegades took the first game of the series
4-1 over the Brooklyn Cyclones.


Friday night presented a different kind of dilemma for the Cyclones.  The Hudson Valley Renegades' starting pitcher; Jason McEachern; faced one batter over the minimum during the first six innings he pitched with no hits allowed.  All he gave the Cyclones was a walk in the second inning as he put the Surf Avenue Sluggers to slumber.


Once the seventh inning started, it then became nineteen batters making out minus a hit.  Brandon Brown led off and flied out to left.  Javier Rodriguez was the next victim.  He was struck out by McEachern for his sixth K of the night.  But that would be the last of the twenty-one batters he would face.  This is after all, A-Level ball with strict pitch limits.  But what McEachern accomplished, relative to this level, was no less remarkable.  Jason left the game after recording two outs in the seventh inning and on the positive side of a 2-0 Renegades' lead.


Dave Laufer entered the game for Hudson Valley in relief of McEachern with a no-hitter still on the line.  The first batter he faced was Richard Lucas.  Laufer got Lucas to strike out swinging...but it came on a wild pitch!  Richard Lucas reached first base safely as a result.  That brought up Brooklyn's Luke Stewart with two outs and a runner on first base.  And he delivered a triple to center field to drive in Lucas for the Cyclones' first run; ruining the shut-out and more importantly, the no-hitter.


That made it a 2-1 game in favor of Hudson Valley.  But the Cyclones had broken the seal.  Or so they thought.  The Renegades came back with three more runs in the eighth inning to put this game out of Brooklyn's reach.  Richard Lucas did manage the Cyclone's second base hit in the ninth with two outs, but this game ended an out later with a 5-1 final score.


Jeffery Walters absorbed the loss tonight for Brooklyn.  He pitched five innings and allowed both of Hudson Valleys' early runs.  His five innings resulted in a very average three hits and three walks allowed with three strikeouts.


After losing the first two games of this series now, both teams come back to Coney Island for the third and final game of the series.  Brooklyn will then try and avoid a sweep.

BKN CYCLONES ~ Staten Island; Phil Hughes Bow To Brooklyn

BROOKLYN CYCLONES:  Bronx Bomber Phil Hughes Not Enough For Staten Island.  Coney Island Nine Take Rubber Game In First Meeting In The Battle Of The Boroughs.



The Staten Island Yankees needed Bomber's starter Phil Hughes, who's on rehab from the Bronx, to help get them out to an early two run lead against Brooklyn in the rubber game of their respective 2011 Opening Day Series.


The Lil' Spankees were feeling pretty good about themselves as Phil Hughes manhandled the Cyclones over his first four innings of work.  He walked one and gave up two hits to that point, but struck out seven Bums.  You might say his rehab was going pretty well today.


The Staten Islanders sent Phil Hughes out for the fifth inning.  That's when the catcher for the Surf Avenue Sluggers; Nelfi Zapata, who hails from the Bronx himself; stepped up and deposited the Major Leaguer's one out offering over the wall in left for a solo home run.  And with that blast, Phil Hughes' work was done for the day.


And so was the Staten Island Yankees' day for that matter.  With their Major League loan out of the game, the Cyclones went to work against the Yankees' bullpen; and more specifically Yankees' reliever; Wilton Rodriguez.  Over the next 2.2 innings, the Cyclones touched him for five hits and four runs.


The Cyclones grabbed their first lead of the afternoon in the sixth inning.  Ismael Tijerina doubled to to lead-off.  He advanced to third base and scored on a Richard Lucas sac-fly to center field.  Luke Stewart singled and moved to second when Juan Torres was hit by a pitch.  Travis Taijeron then singled home Stewart for a 2-1 Brooklyn lead.


The Yankees picked up a run in the top half of the seventh.  In the bottom half, Brooklyn added two more runs when Javier Rodriguez came through with a single off the second baseman scoring runners from second and third, giving the Cyclones a 5-3 lead they'd keep.


Brooklyn starter; Jeffrey Walters; handed in a representative effort.  In 4.1 innings, he allowed two hits and two runs (both earned).  He walked two and struck out four pitching to a no-decision.


Three Cyclone relievers kept the Yankees quiet the rest of the way.  Guillaume Leduc relieved Walters with 1.1 innings; two hits; and two strikeouts.  Today's winning pitcher; Hunter Carnevale; pitched two innings, allowing 2 hits and an unearned run while striking out four.  T.J. Chism closed things out for the Cyclones pitching the ninth inning.  In recording his first save of the season, he gave up a hit and struck out one.
