Charles Hercules Ebbets, Sr. in 1882, began working as a vendor for the fledgling Brooklyn Baseball Club and soon thereafter assumed the responsibilities of Treasurer. By 1890 he had elevated himself to the rank of shareholder and by 1898 owned upwards of 80% of the team. To further facilitate constructing a new ballpark at 55 Sullivan Place, Charlie Ebbets needed to sell half his interest in the team to brothers Edward and Stephen McKeever. Ebbets Field opened for business in 1913 and three years later raised its first National League pennant. In 1920, the Superbas won another. At the zenith of his life and career, the 65-year old Charles Ebbets stayed at New York City's Waldorf Hotel when he succumbed to heart failure during the afternoon hours of April 18, 1925.
