Cyclones Come Undone in the Eighth

In speaking with Ernest Dove during Thursday night's METSIAN PODCAST, we discussed 23-year-old right-hander Carson Seymour's progression through the farm system.  He made four relief appearances last season while playing in the (rookie) Florida Complex League, then began the 2022 season making four starts in seven appearances with the St. Lucie Mets.  Seymour never anticipated breaking the rotation upon his promotion to Brooklyn but was told the organization thought well of him as a starter when attending college.

Making his ninth start for the Cyclones, Seymour held Hudson Valley to one earned run on four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in six innings.  He walked off to a no-decision but not before lowering his ERA to a 3.68 mark through 51.1 innings pitched.

The Renegades took a one-run lead in the second, but another recent St. Lucie graduate, 19-year-old Alex Ramirez, tied the game with a home run in the fourth, then staked the Cyclones to a one-run lead with a run-scoring hit in the sixth.

However, the bullpen could not hold, yielding four runs (three unearned) in the eighth, from which the Cyclones could not recover.

Renegades Turn Up The Power To Clinch Series Win

Looking to salvage a series split, Carson Seymour climbed the hill for Brooklyn.  After three scoreless frames, Hudson Valley third baseman Tyler Hardman and first baseman Eric Wagaman connected on back-to-back home runs.  The Renegades added two more before the fourth inning was through.

Brooklyn third baseman Jose Peroza homered with two outs in the fifth, and Matt Rudick tripled and scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth.  But the Cyclones would tally no more.  Jose Peroza and Rudick accounted for four of Brooklyn's six hits.  The lineup drew just two walks and fanned eleven times.

The Renegades added a pair in the eighth batting against right-hander Nolan Clenney en route to a 6-2 victory and series win over the Cyclones.

Hudson Valley southpaw T.J. Sikkema allowed no runs, no hits, and no walks, with eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings, but exited to a no-decision.  Right-hander Nelvin Correa secured two outs in the fifth inning and earn the win.  But Josue Panacual did the heavy lifting with four innings of relief to earn the save.

Cyclones Take Sunday Finale; Bullpen Closes Out Strong Series Performance

Yet another pitching duel unfolded at Coney Island on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Claws and Cyclones entered the eighth inning tied at two with only four and three hits, respectively.  Catcher Nic Gaddis doubled home Brooklyn's first run in the opening frame, and JT Schwartz scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.  Jersey Shore recovered with two runs in the fifth.

Brooklyn put the potential go-ahead run at second base with one out in the home eighth but left him stranded.  In the top of the ninth, right fielder Joe Suozzi threw out the potential tying run at the plate to preserve the tie.

In the bottom of the ninth, designated hitter Matt O'Neill singled home Jose Peroza with the winning run.

Making his third start with Brooklyn, Luis Moreno allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a no-decision effort.

The bullpen once again performed brilliantly.  Right-hander Brendan Hardy allowed no runs and no hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings, and Carson Seymour allowed no hits in two scoreless innings pitched.  Both pitchers graduated up from St. Lucie this season.  Brooklyn mainstay Justin Courtney
threw a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth win this season.

With the victory, the Cyclones win their third straight, take the series from Jersey City five games to one, and begin the second half of the season with a 3-0 record.
