Game #143: Wednesday, September 15, 1920 - BR
Chicago Cubs vs. Brooklyn Robins
Ebbets Field
Sherry Smith Outclasses Cubs Starter; Whitewashes Chicago for Tenth Victory
Cubs starter Speed Martin might have pitched the best game of his career. But Sherry Smith is better. What the Robins lack in offensive production Sherry more than compensates for. After five scoreless innings Brooklyn posts the game's first and only run on a double by Zack Wheat for his 64th runs batted in of the season. In fact, the Robins muster just five hits all game and draw one walk against Martin who strikes out three over eight innings pitched. Sherry Smith on the other hand yields eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts through nine scoreless innings for the complete game shutout. He improves to 10-8 with an even 2.00 earned run average. Brooklyn takes the series four games to one. They've now won eleven of their last twelve games and are to date an astounding 14-3 in September. The Reds, due in Brooklyn tomorrow, defeat the Phillies at Baker Bowl to remain five games back. But the idle New York Giants lose one half-game and now sit 5.5 games out of first.
**EXTRA: The Cleveland Indians trounce the Philadelphia Athletics by a 13-0 final score at League Park to close within one game of the idle first place New York Yankees.
