Brooklyn Robins Eek Out Series Win Over Defending Champions; Grimes Wins Number Fourteen

It's a fight to the finish.  After four games and eight innings of play, this five game series between Brooklyn and Cincinnati boils down to one final frame.  With the series in the balance Burleigh Grimes and Hod Eller duel to a one-all tie through the eighth.  Jimmy Johnston singles leading off the fourth and eventually scores on second baseman Ed Sicking's mishandling of Ed Konetchy's Texas Leaguer.  Cincinnati ties the game in the seventh on Ed Sicking's base hit scoring right fielder Charlie See.  Into the ninth inning they go.  Zack Wheat leads off with a single and in bunted over to second by Hi Myers.  Ed Konetchy then triples to right and scores on Pete Kilduff's base hit to left.  In the bottom of the ninth Ed Sicking drives in his second run of the game, but the Reds would score no more.  Burleigh Grimes escapes big trouble as the game ends on a timely double-play.   With Tuesday's outcome the Robins take three of five from the defending champion Cincinnati Reds.  Burleigh Grimes holds on for his fourteenth victory versus five losses with a 2.04 earned run average.  He allows two earned runs on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts through nine.  Hard luck loser Hod Eller yields three runs, but only two earned, on nine hits and one walk.  Zack Wheat goes 3 for 4 to get his average back over the .300 mark.   Next stop is Pittsburgh where the Robins conclude this 23-game road trip.

  • RECORD: 52-35 (.597)
  • First Place: 3.0 GA
