Staten Island Yankees: Pizza Rats Take Season Opener from Outer Borough Rival.
Alas the first meeting of the season between the Richmond County Pizza Rats and the visiting Coney Islanders goes to the hosts.
Staten Island starter Matt Sauer tossed a gem, whitewashing the Cyclones through six full innings of no-hit baseball. He faced 18 batters, walking one and fanning three, while throwing 74 pitches with 49 (65%) going for strikes. A victim of tough luck, though, he walked off to a no-decision.
Brooklyn's lone run was unearned, coming off a wild pitch and subsequent throwing error in the top of the seventh. Brooklyn did themselves no favors in the bottom of the frame, when reliever Trent Johnson balked home the tying run, then surrendered a home run to Yankees designated hitter Frederick Cuevas.
Staten Island tacked on an insurance run in the eighth giving the Yankees a 3-1 Opening Day margin of victory.
The Cyclones were limited to just three hits all game.
Brooklyn starter Christian James represented himself well, allowing four hits over five shutout innings pitched. He faced 19 batters, walked one, and fanned three. He too escaped with a no decision. Reliever Trent Johnson took the loss.
Staten Island's Garrett Mundel earned his first save of the season.
The two teams will clash again Saturday evening at Coney Island.
