N.Y. Knicks: Utah Jazz Happy To Get Out of Town

FINAL
JAZZ GET DISTORTED IN SOUNDS OF NEW YORK CITY

A night after being tenderized and marinated by the Nets in Brooklyn, the Knicks put the Jazz to the grill with a ten-point margin of victory at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks through eight games have now faced five of last season's playoff contenders and achieved victory in three, making them 5-3 in this very young season.

They're presently the NBA's sixth stingiest team, yielding 105.1 points per game.  Wednesday against the Jazz marks the third time in eight games they've held their opponent to 100 points or less.  In fact, their opponent's collective 43.3% field goal average ranks third-worst in the league.  Which is to say, Coach Thibodeau has his guys contesting everything.

In Tom Thibodeau's economy, the currency of effort continues earning minutes.  He again sticks with a tight eight-man rotation, but his starters averaged 37.2 minutes, their second-highest mark through eight games.  Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, and Elfrid Payton each put in at least forty minutes.  Look no further than the Knicks twelve-point deficit at halftime.  The Knicks pressed by Thibodeau not only overcome their double-digit deficit but go on to snatch away victory by double-digits.  Austin Rivers leads the bench effort shooting 9/14, including 5/7 from the arc for 23 points in 32 minutes.

Despite shooting 0/5 from long range, Julius Randle was 10/26 from the field and 10/12 from the line for a game-high thirty points as well as a game-high 16 rebounds with seven assists to boot.  The Knicks continue getting price worthy performances from him.

Brooklyn Nets: Flatbush Jazzes Up The Place

From the desk: THE HOOPS OF FLATBUSH

JAZZ     96
NETS   130
FINAL

After two straight losses against the Hawks and Wizards, Flatbush gets back in the win column with Tuesday's commanding victory over the visiting Utah Jazz.

The Nets led by eleven after the first quarter and took a nineteen point lead into the break.  Kyrie Irving, who last year played in only twenty games, took charge of this game with haste, scoring 22 of his team-high 29 points in the first half.  He was 12/19 (63%) from the field for the game, including 5/7 from the arc and no trips to the line.  Overall, the Brooks did a much better job of ball distribution (31-17) and outrebounded the Jazz by a 43-32 margin.  In the end, Flatbush came away with an overwhelming 34-point margin of victory, all minus the services of Kevin Durant, who is quarantining per COVID protocol.

In the absence of both Durant and Spencer Dinwiddie, Coach Nash's starting five took on quite a different look.  Jeff Green, Taurean Prince, and Bruce Brown all started for the Nets.  Playing in only his fourth game and making his first start as a Nets member, newcomer Bruce Brown scored six points with five assists and six rebounds in 23 minutes.  The Taurean Prince doldrums continue; he mustered eight points, two assists, and no rebounds while playing a season-high twenty minutes.

Jarrett Allan also made his first start of the season (and it's about time).  His new role coming off the bench is a contention point for some fans (me).  However, he is getting more minutes than DeAndre Jordan, and more importantly, is finishing games.  After receiving a season-high 32 minutes, Allan rewarded his coach with 19 points, a game-high 18 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.  The game marks the first time Allan has breached thirty minutes this season.

Meanwhile, ask, and ye shall receive!  It was after the second Hawks game when I said:

"Lastly, if you're going to let DeAndre Jordan start over Jarrett Allen, who is getting more minutes and finishing games, then encourage Jordan to throw around his body more."

DeAndre Jordan against the Jazz was limited to a season-low nine minutes.  In fact, it's the first time this season Jordan has been held under fifteen minutes.  Perhaps that's because he drew five personal fouls!  I like it, and I want more of it.

On a night Caris LeVert appeared likely to start, Coach Nash kept him on the bench.  Yet, he and Kyrie Irving were the only two Nets with double-digit shot attempts.  LeVert scored 24 points with five assists in just 21 minutes.  Joe Harris scored ten points in 23 minutes also off the bench.

The night's true beneficiary was Tyler Johnson, who played more minutes on Tuesday than he had in three previous appearances.  Entering the game, having grossed only twelve minutes of floor time, Coach Nash directed eighteen minutes his way, in which Johnson scored six points and distributed a game-high seven assists.

NEXT: Philly comes to Brooklyn.  This will be a test case in Coach Nash's in-game adjustments, as if to say going off-script.  Memphis and Atlanta, in their contests against the Nets, completely painted their interior wall to wall.  We all know Philly means physicality.  How will the Nets handle this coming off last season's playoff experience against the Sixers and this season's two recent instances wherein teams trampled through Brooklyn's inner turf?

N.Y. Giants: Dave Gettleman Facing Fourth And Long

From the desk: DO IT FOR THE DUKE

SEASON FINALE
Cowboys 19
Giants     23
FINAL

The Eagles play dead, Washington wins their final game of the regular season, and the Giants are out of the playoffs.

This is what happens when you place your football fate in the hands of another team.

The Giants didn't deserve to make the playoffs.  Everything else is just noise to me.  You're either a legitimate playoff team, or you're not.  As Bill Parcells always used to say, "You are what your record says you are."

That makes the Giants a sub-par team.

So long 2020 ...

Hello?

John Mara meddled way too much during Eli Manning's last seasons with the Giants, and they're still paying the price.  Let us not forget what Dave Gettleman inherited from Jerry Reese.  But it's becoming time that Gettleman starts owning this continuing futility.

John Mara wanted to rally around Eli Manning one last time.  So Gettleman signed Nate Solder to a ridiculous contract, then drafted Saquon Barkley and Will Hernandez with his first two selections as the Giants' general manager.

Afterwhich, Gettleman spent three of his next five picks selecting defensive linemen (Lorenzo Carter, B.J. Hill, R.J. McIntosh).  We mustn't overlook the useless selection of quarterback Kyle Lauletta in the fourth round.  But Gettleman also began breaking down the defense by trading Snacks Harrison, Eli Apple, Olivier Vernon, et al., and eventually letting Landon Collins walk. This is what I call conflicting agendas.

Selecting Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick was questionable in 2018 and remains so today.  To be clear, Barkley's talent is not in question.  The issue at the time was philosophical and more about the team's direction.  I contend Mara's meddling in 2018 compromised Gettleman's cap flexibility and put his drafting a full year behind schedule.  Not coincidentally, after Gettleman traded Odell Beckham Jr. and installed Daniel Jones at quarterback, the Giants' owner(s) have been silent ever since.

With regards to those selected in the 2018 draft, we anticipate a healthy return by Barkley.  Left guard Will Hernandez was originally sidelined by COVID but was clearly struggling beforehand and never did win back his starting job.  Third round supplemental pick defensive back Sam Beals is even lower on the depth charts.  Meanwhile, Lorenzo Carter spent the 2020 season on injured reserve.  Neither B.J. Hill nor R.J. McIntosh has achieved starter status in the Giants 3-4 scheme.  They play behind 2017 second-round pick Dalvin Tomlinson, trade acquisition Leonard Williams, and left end, Dexter Lawrence, selected in the first round of the 2019 draft.

Dexter Lawrence (think Odell Beckham Jr. trade) was the second of a trio of first-round selections for the Giants.  Of course, 2019's first pick was used to select Daniel Jones.  Cornerback Deandre Baker was Gettleman's third first-round selection but is no longer with the team (which deserves its own narrative). Without a number two pick, Oshane Ximines was drafted in the third round as a defensive end.  When that didn't work out, Ximines was moved to linebacker but wound up another casualty on the injured reserve list.  Julian Love and Darius Slayton are keepers, whereas Ryan Connerly and Corey Ballentine are both gone.  Lastly, seventh-round selections George Asafo-Adjel and (and yet another failed defensive lineman) Chris Slayton are nowhere to be found.

The 2020 draft was another mixed bag of goods.  Selecting three offensive linemen within the team's first five picks was impressive.  Andrew Thomas was the fourth overall selection of the draft.  His season was filled with both good times and bad, but I expect he'll improve.  Matt Peart and Shane Lemieux came on strong as the season progressed.  In fact, Lemieux's effective play kept Will Hernandez on the sidelines.  Gettleman, with his second and fourth picks, selected Xavier McKinney and Darnay Holmes.  Gettleman then drafted four linebackers with minimal impact.

I'm going to credit Dave Gettleman with ten draft hits in just under thirty attempts.  Keep in mind a player's best ability is his availability.  If a player is hurt, that player is probably not on my list.  Otherwise, the respective levels of success are debatable:

  1. Saquon Barkley
  2. Will Hernandez
  3. Daniel Jones
  4. Dexter Lawrence
  5. Julian Love
  6. Darius Slayton
  7. Andrew Thomas
  8. Xavier McKinney
  9. Matt Peart
  10. Shane Lemieux

One thing Gettleman cannot be criticized for is ignoring the offensive line.  You wanted hog mollies; you got hog mollies.  However, his draft selections at linebacker and defensive line have mostly been terrible.  His choices for the secondary have been hit or miss.  Insofar as the 2020 season, the 2018 draft proved largely inconsequential.  The 2019 draft at least yielded four starters.  If I'm not mistaken, Darius Slayton is Gettleman's lone wide receiver selection through three drafts.

The main takeaway from the Odell Beckham trade remains Dexter Lawrence.  While Jabrill Peppers has been more than serviceable, the aforementioned Oshane Ximines has not.

The upside to acquiring Leonard Williams from the Jets now rests in Gettleman's hands.  To pay him, or not, is the question.  Williams, at 26-years old, enjoyed a career season with the Giants.  In twelve starts and sixteen games, he set career highs with 11.5 sacks and 30 QBhits.  His 29 solo and 28 assisted tackles were his most since (2016) his second year in the league.  Leonard Williams and Dalvin Tomlinson are both headed towards free agency.  It's hard to imagine the Giants signing both.  And so, we cycle back to the draft and Gettleman's generally poor history of drafting defensive linemen.

After the 2021 season, the office of general manager will likely need revisiting anyway.  First and foremost, Gettleman's age and well being must be taken into consideration.  But for as long as he feels up for the task, then the Giants are 15-33 (.312) during his tenure.

Isn't it odd how his win percentage and his rate of draft hits are alarmingly similar?

His next draft will be his fourth as general manager of the Giants.

FINAL

Coach Thibodeau and the Time Bandits were at it again ...

Picking up where I left off, Monday's starting five averaged 34 minutes, but only because Julius Randall clocked in at 43 minutes and R.J. Barrett punched in at game-high 44 minutes.  Employing a tight eight-man rotation, Austin Rivers played 33 minutes off the bench.

Despite shooting 0 for 5 from the arc, Julius Randall led the Knicks with a team-high 28 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and nine assists in a five-point margin of victory over the Hawks at Atlanta.  Through seven games this season, Randall has scored 25 or more on four occasions.  The other big "timer" joined Randall in posting double-doubles.  Shooting a similar 1 for 5 from long range, RJ Barrett scored 26 points and secured eleven rebounds.  Immanuel Quickley was 4/7 from the field and 6/6 from the line for sixteen points in nineteen minutes off the bench.

Kevin Knox II finished with six points but perhaps none more important than his three from the left corner at the third-quarter buzzer to cut the Knicks deficit to four.

The Knicks then went on to outpace the Hawks 29-20 in the fourth quarter.  For the game, they outrebounded the Hawks by a margin of five, blocked six shots, and instigated nine steals.

Ever since the season opener when they yielded 121 points against Indiana, the Knicks have since held opponents to 110 points or less in each of their last six games.  In fact, if you omit the opening game against the Pacers, the Knicks have yielded an average of just 102.5 points per game over their last six.

The Knicks are now 3-2 on the road and off to a 4-3 start in this young season.

On Sunday, Los Gigantes del Cibao took a two games to none lead in their series against Los Estrellas Orientales.  Fernando Tatis Jr. homered in the first inning to give Orientale a prompt 1-0 lead.  Undeterred, Gigantes right fielder Moises Sierra led off the top of the second with a double and scored on a double-play.  Cibao then took a 2-1 lead in the third on left fielder Jose Siri's two-out home run to left.  Los Estrellas second baseman and Mets farmhand Gustavo Nuñez singled home the tying run in the fourth.  In the top of the seventh, Jose Siri connected on his second home run of the game, and first baseman Ronald Guzman tripled and scored, giving Cibao a 4-2 lead.  Los Estrellas rallied for a run in the ninth, but Ryan Kussmaul was able to secure the save.  Los Estrellas designated hitter Robinson Cano was 2 for 4, with a double.

⚾

Los Toros del Este outlasted Los Aguilas Cibaeñas to take a two games to none lead in their semifinal series.  Aguilas starter Carlos Martinez allowed no runs on just two hits and two walks with six strikeouts through six innings pitched.  Los Toros starter Raúl Valdés through five innings yielded no runs on three hits, and no walks with four strikeouts.  Both exited with no decisions.  Los Aguilas rallied for a run in the eighth, but not before Los Toros designated hitter Yasiel Puig (from the dugout) is ejected from the game.  When play resumes, Cibaeñas scores on consecutive hits from Juan Lagares and Melky Cabrera.  In the bottom half of the eighth, Los Toros immediately load the bases.  Left fielder Miguel Andujar's sacrifice fly to center plates the tying run.  Shortstop Jorge Mateo then scores the go-ahead run on a force play at second.  Southpaw Fernando Abad pitches a scoreless ninth for the save.  Right-hander Jairo Asencio earned the win in relief.

AVERAGING 33 MINUTES PER GAME

Coach Thibodeau Time Stamping Team Effort at the Door

Six games into the season, the Knicks perhaps have already won two more contests than many anticipated.  First and foremost was their bedazzling twenty-point victory over Milwaukee.  They promptly followed up with a nine-point victory at Cleveland, and then Saturday's defensively contested win at Indiana.  A defeat at the hands of Toronto makes them 3-1 in their last four games.

The Knicks, on average, have thus far allowed 104.7 points per game, ranking them fifth-best in the league.

Hello Coach Tom Thibodeau!

If you're a starter for the Knicks, Coach is taking away the minutes that make up a dull day in an old-fashioned way (... Pink Floyd).  Said another way, he makes you work hard, and it appears as if he has the full attention of his largely young and impressionable personnel.

I'll make opening night a stand-alone game, only because it was the first game, and no one really knew what to expect - not from Thibodeau, but from this roster.  However, six games in, we have a trend to speak of.

During game one against Indiana, seven different players registered at least twenty minutes; the starters clocked in an average of 27.6 minutes.  After the first game, what's there to say..?

During game two versus PHILA, six different players played at least twenty minutes; the starters averaged 28.4 minutes.  However, whereas Elfrid Payton started, he only played eighteen minutes.  Carrying the load off the bench were Kevin Knox II with 29 minutes and Alec Burks with 31 minutes.

Coach Thibodeau switched up and started Reggie Bullock against Milwaukee but limited him to seventeen minutes.  Similarly, six different players partake in at least twenty minutes, with two coming off the bench; Knox registered 26 minutes and Burks 21 minutes.  The five starters this time average 31.2 minutes.

Thibodeau revved things up in their victory at Cleveland, playing his five starters an average of 38.4 minutes without a single bench player achieving twenty minutes.  Coach stuck with a tight eight-man rotation with Knox, Frank Ntilikina, and Nerlens Noel, receiving sixteen minutes each.

Coach then eased up on the gas pedal against Toronto.  Seven players got at least twenty minutes, but the starting five still averaged 32.2 minutes.

FINAL

Saturday in their return match against the Pacers, Coach stuck with a nine-man rotation.  Elfrid Payton started and scored 19 points with five assists in 34 effective minutes.  The starting five averaged 35 minutes, but center Mitchell Robinson just missed the mark with 29 minutes.  Otherwise, the four-man bench averaged 16 minutes.

Cycling back, I am omitting game one just because ...

Under Coach Thibodeau, Knicks' starters over the last five games average 33 minutes per game and play top tier defense.  They have now played Indiana twice.  Therefore, to date, four of the Knicks' five opponents last season all qualified for the playoffs, with the lone exception being Cleveland.

With another coach in place, this team is not playing .500 basketball.  Inclusive in Tom Thibodeau and Scott Perry's job descriptions are making the recent past (twenty years) a non-issue.  Thibodeau is already garnering results.  The onus now falls on general manager Scott Perry to procure for this coach some more complimentary talent by the March trade deadline.  Nothing crazy, just someone to help share the load.  That Thibodeau is a demanding dude.

BOXSCORE - In Puerto Rico, top-seeded Los Criollos de Caguas take game one against number four seed RA12 at Estadio Pedro Montañez in the city of Cayey.  With two runners aboard in the bottom of the third, Mets farmhand Johneshwy Fargas singles on a comebacker to RA12 starter Juan Aponte who throws errantly to first; third baseman Edwin Diaz scores on the play.  Caguas scores twice more before the frame is through on a pair of sacrifice flies for a 3-0 lead entering the fourth.  The RobertoAlomar12 squad scores their lone run of the game on designated hitter Glenn Santiago's triple in the seventh.  Los Criollos pick up two insurance runs in the eighth en route to a 5-1 victory.  Johneshwy Fargas' base hit ends up being Los Criollos' only hit of the game but reached base on seven walks and three errors.  Right-hander Jose DeLeon earns the victory upon yielding no runs on just three hits and no walks with ten strikeouts through six innings pitched.  Four Criollos pitchers join in limiting RA12 to just four hits, three walks while fanning fourteen.

Brooklyn Nets: Lack of Physical Graffiti in Flatbush

FINAL

Grizzlies and Hawks Paint Nets Interior

This was not the happiest way to ring in the New Year as the Duds of Flatbush trailed by nine at the half and lost by eighteen points to the Atlanta Hawks, who on Friday gained a series split with the Nets at Barclays Center.

Brooklyn's defense clearly took the holidays off, allowing the Hawks 255 points over the course of two games.  Last week's loss against the Memphis Grizzlies initially brought into question the Nets' lack of physicality and interior defense.  On Friday, the Hawks, as if by invitation, ball-handled through the lane for easy bucket after easy bucket.

With three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Coach Nash emptied the entire bench.  Of the five players to play the last three minutes of the game, only Chris Chiozza walked off with a personal foul.  My point is the Nets committed only fifteen other fouls all game.  Obviously, no one wants Durant and Kyrie Irving playing in foul trouble.  But only Joe Harris earned as many as four fouls - one-quarter of all Nets whistles.  Said another way, they had better start bumping bodies and better protect the paint.  Because this just isn't about the Hawks; this has everything to do with the way the Nets were manhandled two playoffs ago by Philadelphia.  I'm not asking them to clothesline Kurt Rambis.  But sometimes, a team effort involves starters and the bench having three, four, or even five players with upwards of four personals.  If you're crafty about it, it's well worth the effort.  When you deploy fifteen bodies and seven of them walk off the court with no personal fouls in a game wherein the Nets couldn't prevent a mailbox from driving the lane, well ... you know what mean,

... or not.

Flatbush from long-range shot a mere 7/37 (18.9%) and was outscored 48-21 from the arc.  That more than accounts for Brooklyn's eighteen point margin of defeat.  The bench was largely ineffective as well.
However, shooting touch comes and goes, whereas defensive intensity must come every night.  Things really fell apart in the third quarter against Atlanta's subs.  Moreover, this is only Brooklyn's third loss of the season, but they've already revealed so much.

Lastly, if you're going to let DeAndre Jordan start over Jarrett Allen, who is getting more minutes and finishing games, then encourage Jordan to throw around his body more.

The "Centers of Attention" were effectively outplayed by Atlanta's Clint Capela, who finished 6/10 from the floor for twelve points and tied for a game-high eleven rebounds in thirty minutes.  Kyrie Irving led the Nets with eleven rebounds.  Allan and Jordan joined for thirteen points and nine rebounds (with four total fouls) in a combined forty minutes.  Atlanta outrebounded the Nets by a margin of three and did a better job of distribution and creating turnovers.

Aside from Coach Nash switching everyone out during the last minutes, five other bench regulars only scored 25 points in 88 total minutes.

But when it rains, it pours.  Getting starts, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot shot just 1/7 and 0/5 from the arc.  Meanwhile, Caris LeVert was 4/10 from the field and 0/3 from afar with three assists in 27 minutes off the bench.

WEEK SEVENTEEN
Friday Line ~ NYP/MGM

Cowboys -2 GIANTS
With a playoff berth at stake, I'd like to think the Giants are gonna pull one out for The Duke, but the Cowboys seem to have figured a few things out, and as I said last week, Dallas still has enough playmakers.
Loss  23-19 Giants

Jets +3 PATRIOTS
Why the hell not?!  If there was a way to screw the Jets out of the second overall picks Adam Gase will find the way.  Gang Gase actually played well against the Patriots in their first meeting, and the defense is playing better since Gregg Williams was fired.  Sam Darnold wanting to go out on a good note, will have his best game of the season (although Adam Gase still won't let him audible).
Loss  28-14 Patriots

BUCS -6 1/2 Falcons
Not impressed with Atlanta's tight near-victory against the Chiefs.  Tom Brady and the Bucs defense punctuate their regular season with a drubbing of the Falcons.
WIN  44-27 Bucs

Ravens -13 BENGALS
We'll see how good the Bengals feel about themselves after this game.
WIN  38-3 Ravens

Packers -5 1/2 BEARS
Oh no! Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari is out with a torn ACL.  That's a big loss.  If the Bears take away the Packers' run game, Aaron Rogers will beat them; if they try and get after Rogers, the Packers' run game will trip up the Bears.  Mitch Trubisky can't do enough to keep up.
WIN  35-16 Packers

COLTS -14 Jaguars
The entire Jaguars roster is questionable - just to make sure they get that #1 pick.  Their general manager will be jumping for joy watching his team get destroyed by the Colts, who desperately need this game.
PUSH  28-14 Colts

Chargers -3 1/2 CHIEFS
This is a rest game for the Chiefs, allowing the Bolts to end off on a good note.
WIN  38-21 Chargers

BILLS -3 Dolphins
The greatest team in New York State will play this game straight up.  Miami is counting on their rookie quarterback; Ryan FitzMagic tested positive for COVID.
WIN  56-26 Bills

Vikings -6 1/2 LIONS
I dub thee Toilet Bowl XVII ... Lions are already sipping on the catnip.  Two despondent teams will make for an eye tearing yawn fest.
Loss  37-35 Vikings

Saints -7 PANTHERS
Panthers had their fun last week.  Saints have great balance on each side of the ball.
WIN  33-7 Saints

BROWNS -9 Steelers
The Browns need to hit the restart button.  The Steelers are sitting out regulars.
Loss  24-22 Browns

Titans -7 1/2 TEXANS
The Titans will be met with little resistance by the Texans' defense.
Loss  41-38 Titans

No Names -2 EAGLES
WTF: win and in.  Dwayne Haskins is unemployed, and Alex Smith is back behind center.
WIN  20-14 No Names

Cardinals -3 RAMS
That's it for the L.A. Paper Tigers; the damage is done.  Rams are collapsing like a cheap poker table.
Loss  18-7 Rams

Raiders -2 1/2 BRONCOS
... member when this was one of the best rivalries in football?  Parity demands the Raiders finish with an 8-8 record.
Loss  32-31 Raiders

Seahawks - 5 1/2 NINERS @ Arizona
The Seahawks finish a fine season on a high note; Jamal Adams makes a tremendous difference for Seattle.
Loss  26-23 Seahawks

Schmear of the Week
Saints -7
WIN ... Finally!

Good luck, Happy New Year, and have a great Football Sunday, everyone!

The ten-team league regular season is split into two halves.  Los Yaquis de Obregon captured the first half-title; Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo captured the second half-title and the number one seed.  The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs, which commence on Saturday.  By the way, through the years, I just gravitated towards the Naranjeros and became a fan.
