Brooklyn Cyclones ~ The Boardwalk Bums Are Back

BROOKLYN CYCLONES:

12th Season of Baseball By The Sea Shore.

...But, we start this season without our beloved and legendary Voice of Summer.  The most esteemed occupant of The Catbird Seat; Mr. Warner Fusselle; has passed away at the age of sixty-eight.  The only radio broadcaster the Cyclones ever had, now calls games in a better place.

I live/lived within listening distance of the Cyclone's previous broadcasts out of Kingsborough Community College.  And therefore, Warner Fusselle's voice was a big part of my summer, as I was always tuned into the games, if I wasn't there in person, that is.  And so, Mr. Fusselle will sorely be missed, not just by me, but by my whole generation of baseball fans.  He became known to me as the voice of This Week In Baseball, after taking over for Mel Allen.

Having Warner Fusselle call games on behalf of the Borough of Kings, has been nothing short of, Classic.

The radio broadcasts will continue, but from a new, more powerful signal and home at Seton Hall University Radio.  With far more reach than their previous, limited signal emanating off the shores of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn Cyclones fans throughout the greater New York City area will now be able to listen to games on WSOU 89.5 FM.

The Cyclones have revealed their Preliminary Roster for the upcoming season which begins Monday evening in Coney Island, against the rival Staten Island Yankees.  Included on the roster, and making his Brooklyn debut, will be Team Sandy's 2011 thirteenth overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft; outfielder, Brandon Nimmo.

Welcome to Brooklyn Brandon!  See you at the park.

Rich Donnelly is returning for a second season as Cyclones' skipper.  After nearly guiding us to a championship last season, he will be a welcome sight calling signals from the third base box again.  Marc Valdez takes over for Frank Viola as Pitching Coach.  He's coached in the Mets system since 2007; most recently in Binghampton.  Former Cyclones' player, Bobby Malek, returns for a second season as hitting coach.

HAS PASSED AWAY AT AGE SIXTY-EIGHT.

The Cat Bird Seat will never be the same.  Brooklyn's Voice of Summer has passed.  A man who my generation met through This Week In Baseball, calls games for another team now.  The great Warner Fusselle, radio broadcaster of the Brooklyn Cyclones since 2001, has left us at the age of sixty-eight.

BKN Cyclones ~ Pennant Race Down to a Dozen

BROOKLYN CYCLONES:  Making it Hard on Themselves; Not Taking Advantage of Key Loses by Staten Island.


I erroneously sent the Cyclones on the road to Troy a day early in yesterday's post.  Sue me.  Regardless, Monday was another one of those good news; bad news type of nights.


Staten Island and Williamsport won their games.  And in Brooklyn's continuation portion of Sunday's game, the Cyclones failed to comeback from Sunday's deficit and lost to Tri-City 7-4.


But they weren't through.  In the second game of the make-up-game double-header, Javier Rodriguez erased a Valley Cat 2-0 lead in the fifth inning with a two RBI double.  Then in extra innings; because double-headers are seven inning games; a home run by Amauris Valdez in the bottom of the eighth won it for Brooklyn.  It was the first home run of the season for one of the newest Cyclones to sign. 


And as Warner Fusselle would go on to say, "Mercy!"


But that was yesterday.  This is a pennant race.  And tonight, the Cyclones got a bunch of help from their friends.  In Staten Island, the Lowell Spinners held off a near-successful comeback by the Yankees who scored three runs in the home ninth but fell one short; - 6-5 win Lowell.


Big props to the Batavia Muckdogs!  They took both games of a double-header against the Williamsport Crosscutters out in Western New York by identical 2-1 scores.  That was huge, as the Cyclones dropped their game against the Valley Cats by a score of 7-4.


So now, the Cyclones are just 0.5 games behind the Crosscutters for the Wild Card.  But they are 3.5 games behind the Yankees in the McNamara Division after recently closing in to within 1.5 games.


Twelve games remain in the regular season.  Tomorrow, Brooklyn and Troy go at it again.

Brooklyn Cyclones:  The Great Warner Fusselle Is Back In The CATBIRD SEAT For His 11th Season Behind The Mike.


For ten years now, Warner Fusselle has been one of the sweetest sounds of summer in Brooklyn.  The former This Week In Baseball narrator has been sitting in The Catbird Seat calling games for the Brooklyn Cyclones since the team's inception. 


Since his very first call in 2001, his voice never once failed to take me back to my days as a teenager and before, when I watched the weekly Baseball series before NBC's Game of the Week aired.  That was must see TV back then; -  back in the days before the Cable Companies had their Big Bang and suckered us into paying for TV with a promise of no commercials.


Maybe there-in lies a reason why Warner Fusselle is an out-and-out Legend.  He connects us with a wholly different era.  He provides Cyclones' listeners with equal parts of nostalgia and modern professionalism, while providing the team with major journalistic prominence in the booth.  And as such, he commands respect spanning generations of Baseball fans.


Quite honestly, it's a privilege listening to Mr. Fusselle call our beloved Cyclones' games.  As a Class-A organization, Brooklyn Cyclone fans are lucky and honored to have an announcer of his caliber, not to mention an individual held in such high regard as Warner Fusselle is, behind the microphone giving us every detail of Brooklyn Baseball as it unfolds before him.


But then, the Cyclones aren't just a Class-A organization to me.  They are Brooklyn.  And we got one of the best voices EVER, calling our games.


In the immortal words if Jackie Gleason, "How Sweet It Is!"

The Cyclones drew first blood in the Battle of the Boroughs.  Brooklyn knocked Yankee pitcher; Bryan Mitchel out of the game early.  He did himself in with walks and a wild pitch, but with a single from Luke Stewart; a single from Amarius Valsez; a single by Dann Muno....Badda Beep and Badda Booop;  ....and the Cyclones were winning. 


A triple by Travis Taijeron in the sixth inning and an RBI single by Dylan Brown gave Brooklyn their lead again.  They tacked on another in the ninth and held on to secure their first victory of the season.
